Skipped through, still not convinced by the game's aesthetics, but the 2 minutes total of random stuff I heard and saw pisses so much over Syncerror's entire career it's not even funny. Not even trying to be mean, just a fact I cannot resist stating.
One can only wonder what could possibly be going through Adam's mind if he sat and watched through this VOD.
To me it looks like cartooned Reflex. Not sure if its bad, but i would prefer something more grim and atmospheric. However, this is understandable, being indie dev with limited budget you would save money, like, on everywhere you could, including the models.
It has nothing to do with budget most likely, I'd say they're hiding a hardcore afps behind happy little eggs to make it look like fun and accessible game.
It is much easier to make something funny and light-hearted that is also good in quality than something serious and dark. Everybody can make wacky shit, but if you want a serious aesthetic that also turns out impressive, you need actual competent artists with lots of talent/passion and a vision. And they need to know actual art, i.e. look outside of videogames for inspiration, because videogames are still mostly trash in terms of their artistic merit.* Q3 was good because Adrian Carmack is a capital-a Artist first, and video game person second. He knows and has studied the works of people like Giger and Bekzinzki and many much more obscure artists that we normies never heard about, and developed his own style as a result. Games like Stalker, The Witcher and others have a good atmosphere and interesting characters/stories/themes because they're based on media that aren't videogames. Your average art school undergraduate has a deeper knowledge of the stuff that's out there and makes more inspired things in more traditional media than fucking AAA videogame studios. In terms of visuals, it can be argued the vast majority of 3D videogames have not even arrived in the 1870s yet.
* I'd argue that videogames, like all mainstream art, actually degenerated in the last 2 decades due to commercialization. This explanation is consistent with the observation that indie and older games, while sporting less fidelity for obvious reasons, tend to be more original in their vision. Basically, the more money's involved, the prettier but blander it is.
2GD is doing the right thing by making his aFPS wacky and lighthearted. If he makes it serious and dark, apart from that being much harder to get right, people will get the impression that it's a serious game and think that they have to take it seriously, which is an awful idea for a game this hard. aFPS need to get the casuals, and for that, the games need to be fun, and for that, they need to look like fun. Serious and dark things are not fun.
I dont play too many AAA games, but Bioshock had very impressive artstyle, played part 1 and part 3 ... imho. video games have become much better in terms of art, because more and more people from the film industry get involved, but they lack in gameplay value compared to the games in the 90s ...
Yeah, I don't know what the hell happened after Q3. Somehow no game got it right aesthetics wise and engine wise.
Q4 had that annoying, crappy greasy look from the ancient bumpamping technology of Doom 3. It also made the character feel heavy, cluttered, crampy.
Roflex has that insanely slick feel to it, not in a good way, as in every single surface is polished, I don't know how to put it.
QC is just Q4 on steroids. TOO MUCH fucking detail too, headache inducing. The scale is fucked up.
Warsow was just fucking annoying.
And this Diabotical game has that WoW-Fornite look.
I mean Q3 with picmip 0 and everything set up to high looks better. It looks detailed enough and you can actually see what the fuck is going on on the screen without having to resort to the cartoon look.
Dont like the infantile theme either, but so far it looks like people are going to have some actual freedom, so custom servers with reskins seem quite possible.
Besides this, the game looks pretty much what ql was supposed to be: good old gameplay with features and infrastructure. The mongrels from id can choke on their lore scrolls.
