The omniprescence of antisemitism is shocking to me. Millions of people were murdered with some crooked worldview to guide. My grandfathers family was entirely killed off. He escaped some camp and lived and was traumatised obviously, passing the trauma on. Imo QL is the last all around real and in terms of gameplay the best iteration of this series, it's available on steam and there are still players and servers around.

For me the last big drop in quality was when no one wanted to pay the subscription anymore and they put it on steam to let the community run servers and all. A ton of players didn't make the switch and the population dropped quite a bit.

This is a Quake-centric website which used to be under pretty strict moderation and that's when the value of the content was the highest. Eroding standards means worse content that does not engage the community and as a result you have comments sections where significant portions are people insulting one another.

This has a disastrous effect on the culture of a forum over a long period of time, you slowly to lose the meaningful contributors and commenters, and are left with a disproportionate amount of trolls, idiots, etc...

There's a reason why good written pieces, especially if you look at reputable publications, don't attempt to discuss topics through the use of expletives, derogatory remarks, etc. Often the better the standards, the better the community's ability to engage with the piece.

Vajra, Quakecon was last weekend, there is a new Quake game in development, a lot of the older communities are going through a mini-revival, there's Quake LANs on the horizon, and Quake tournament's happening online in North America and Europe. To suggest there's nothing Quake related to discuss is dishonest.

The reason why that stuff does not filter into ESReality is because the people who think about writing this stuff have all left the website due to it's non-existent moderating. This has been an ongoing challenge on ESR for about a decade.

I'd say it's been many years since ESR stopped being a Quake-centric site. Just saying this to have a more honest discussion about this site.

The point of removing non-Quake content, for the sake of preserving that condition, is to highlight Quake content and avoid it getting lost in the shuffle. But the problem is there hasn't been an informative thread here since maybe 2012. Not one guide, not one contribution.

In 2018 the "classic ESR" is preserved in Discord, whereas in esreality.com there's only activity twice a year and not a single person makes comments about the actual matches. ESR is trolling-centric now.

I think you're right in that it has been a long time since Quake-centric news dominated the website. I think that's because it became permissible to spam lots of garbage on the website then have a bunch of "smart people" come and defend it under the guise of "freedom of expression." This became the norm which the admins never attempted to fight back, or fought back and were met with resistant by vocal posters and/or other admins.

Edit: It's laughable because from way most people talk about these "rights" you know they've been generally informed by entertainment shows on topics of law.

Awful lot of context out of our convo to not be a little aimed at me. But my point was that this site lets you be derogatory and that's what makes it great. You don't have to shoehorn an insult just so it doesn't get deleted or downvoted or reported or whatever. I don't know of many sites where the admins would get insulted(persistently) to their face and not throw a power-tantrum of any kind. But I've seen it here. And they have put people on probation, it's not a utopia. It's not a great quake site anymore cause nobody plays quake. HLTV is doing fine though and it has the quality content with the quality trolls.

ESR does not have monopoly on derogatory comments/behaviour, you can find that in lots of places. What you can't find elsewhere is a pretty meticulous history of a niche game which was at one point a big thing in culture. That is considerably more important than whatever you are suggesting.

It's actually the opposite, esr used to be moderated less strictly than it is now, and powertripping admins are exactly what drove away all the most prolific and best shitposters. The big names that made the most inspired and colourful posts.
