higher DPI basically results in a more sensitive mouse (without putting other things like smoothing, native dpi etc. into account here).

Why is that? If you move your mouse by 1mm the amount of dpi determines how much dots the mouse registers at a given distance (inch), so technically speaking the accuracy increase with higher dpi is a given fact. Ingame sensitivity is nothing more than a scaling/amplifying value.
So if you have a mouse like the GPW for example which has native 50dpi steps and no smoothing on any setting at all, you should choose a DPI value that fits for sensitivity 1 ingame.
I play on 1200 coming from 400 dpi sens 3. same cm/360 as before.
What has to be considered is the impact on accel values.
MORE DPI = higher scaling/amplifying of cl_mouseaccel.

Use funender site to calculate. I went from 0.05 mouseaccel to 0.01.

mice sensors and implementations got much better nowadays, basically we're not stuck with 400 or 800dpi anymore

most top optical mice sensor perform just the same if under 3500dpi, above it starts to jitter, smoothing etc

Set dpi over 9000 and you get instantly tox lg aim xD

Mouse response is faster with higher dpi, but at around 2000dpi with most sensors there is jitter correction. So yes, technically you should use 1800 or so. In reality... 400dpi is all you need.

Gotta find what's comfortable for you, I've tried 400, 800, 1600, 1800 and beyond and found 800 was a good balance between being not too sensitive and not too slow.

on most 3310/3360/3366/Razer top optical/roccat top optical/steelseries top optical, they can go up to 3200/3500 dpi without any jitter/smoothing, but above these values, even on best optical mice, yes, there's jitter, tracking issues and smoothing involved
