Still already 10x better than QC, but that isn't really an achievement. For the moment this is my last hope for a sustainable AFPS, and hopefully coke and donuts will not ruin it this time.
People are hyped (not as much as for new SOULCALIBUR) because it comes from 2GD.
A guy who actually knows what makes a good game.
It will have shitload of QOL features that should be mandatory in any shooter made in current_year.
Great optimisation, great customisation, great socialisation.
And it will have MUCH better start than any Reflex/Warsow/Xonotic just because people know 2GD.
one part of a game is gameplay and being a pro player for sure helps with creating a nice gameplay. we can see with qc what happens if you are not a pro player.
the gameplay part for afps for sure was already done in perfection in q3. the game where 2gd is a pro player in. where he has his knowledge about afps from. but what will he come up with other than a q3 gameplay? we already have q3 and we already had countless q3 clones which where not far away from q3 gameplay and which all failed.
what does the pro player can come up with apart from gameplay? what does popularity do help with game design? i am sure tim was also popular at id which is why he was allowed to do qc. now look at qc. 2gd is smart yes, but in which regards he is? is it necessarily game design?
and what is with the theory with people nowdays not want to play afps anymore? is 2gd popular enough to solve this riddle? when i look at twitch he has 27 videos there with a felt 200 views in average. is that enough to promote an unpopular type of gameplay?
He has connections within different fields of the industri, that will most likely be to his advantage, lots of ppl owing him favours, lots of ppl who will help spread the word. Exposure is key, QC mainly got exposure via media, hopefully Diabotical can get exposure on both levels, grassroot level from famous streamers/players as well as media coverage. If Diabotical have built in community features which seem meaningful to beginners AND seasoned players it could actually work. Moddability is also a key point, it makes sure for a constant flow of new content (maps). I think he's currently working harder on the promotional side of the game than on the game itself. We will see :) I hope it will turn out good. Atleast I think it have a chance at being more than QC, both from a gameplay point of view and from a community pov.
It doesn't need to beat mainstream games. It just needs to be a decent arena fps that arena fps lovers and nostalgics can play comfortably and hang around.
I really want this game to be bigger than Fortnite when it comes out...
But that said, someone give me one, good reason why this game will have a larger player base than, say, Reflex.
Look at QC, it has a giant like Bethesda behind it, yet still only peaks @ 3k players daily.
(yes, yes, we all know "QC sux", but kids today don't think QC sucks because of the champ abilities. They will think Diabotical sucks just as much, if not more, for reasons nothing to do with champ abilities.)
Meanwhile, I'll give you the top 3 reasons why this game will bomb:
#1 Its not Battle Royale
#2 It has Strafe Jumping
#3 It does not have a large company behind it to do promotion
I will certainly play Diabotical, but QC still has a better chance to be a semi-popular fps game
QC has improved a lot and if they fix the performance and netcode issues, release ctf and promote it again on release, it could certainly succeed imo.
btw rapha vs cooller final can only mean that the latest patch required slightly more brain than the previous ones. Even that is an improvement.
hate it to say it here, going against the vibe of my favourite site, but QC is fun, maybe annoying fun, but we still enjoy playing it, while cursing at the same time. If they fix performance, reduce the queue times and release ctf, it will be good to go.
the devs did huge mistakes and they were slow as snails, but they got few things right, some from the beginning (the maps) and some after almost 2 years (like the balance of the champs and the weapons).
"QC has improved a lot and if they fix the performance and netcode issues, release ctf and promote it again on release, it could certainly succeed imo."
You heavily gloss over what is wrong in QC and its much more problems than that.
-The engine is buggy and crusty and no ammount of polish will change it
-Its questionable if netcode can be fixed
-Limited to the maps they make which are all small and bad
-nobody outside of EA or USA can que duels quickly even in peak hour meaning the game will never achieve world wide popularity.
-Load into server, kick out of server, repeat. Nobody puts up with this long before just playing something else.
-CTF is just another mode that in concept sounds good, but when we see it actually applied to QC it will just resemble another sacrifice or slipgate mode.
they started out by thinking we do not nned armors. item timing sucks. it takes away the action. now they partially brought them back. these guys are still learning what a good game needs to have and still they dont have it. i dont know how long you want to wait until tim or syncerror or whoever know what they do and dont rod until they find something that works (which all was already done not to mention).
this game will never have what it would take. i watched the pgl finals for example and they were close to boring. cooller vs rapha. close to boring. picture that.
most of the fights in qc are simply meaningless. one protects heavy the other mega. which spawn at the same time... lol about that. so both collect their item, equal amount of stack. both too smart to be trapped in a stupid fight. stalemate situation. until something random happens and one wins.
