Why the fuck are they asking for money to play QL but QC is free to play? Scared that QL playerbase will be higher than QC?
Just let people play for free and let people create and host custom maps and content like in Q3, you disgraceful demons aren't even updating the game anymore. Fuck these fucking guys.
They would make more money if they get more people playing that then will jump to the next game whenever they make a new Quake that doesnt suck. Think long term.
The devs are trying though, hence the game used to be paid-to-play and nowadays is filled with microtransactions. They are not giving it away with nothing to purchase in the game, like the aspie OP wants QL to be.
And I'm not so sure if QC has made them lose money. Remember they hired a cheap Russian studio to make it and that when the Russian currency was heavily depreciated. Few sales - fewer costs = profit.
An offtopic: QL is indeed better than QC. Anyone that says otherwise is biased by being financially invested in QC.
A lot of the prize money comes from sponsors though.
Also, when I was big time into Dirty Bomb I knew quite a few of the devs and players and was told about players who spent thousands of euros / dollars on cases and skins. I didn't believe it until they named some of the players and I knew one of them whom I asked and he confirmed he had indeed spent about 3,500 dollars on cases and skins in the space of 6 months. From what I remember there was also a player whose parents are millionaires who supposedly spent 1.5 million Russian rupees on the game, the equivalent of about 22,000 dollars on cases, skins, weapon skins and trinkets, and gave an additional donation of 5,000 dollars to the devs.
All you need is a few people with money who kinda have gambling / unlocking addition traits and you can easily make some money.
"the only way they could skim more money is to release more stupid champions and charge extra to unlock them."
Which they have done for those who got the game for free. And I wonder if making Death Knight overpowered on release was kinda voluntary to get more people to buy it.
"It is likely that the vast majority of players are playing for free and few are paying money, such that a very tiny minority ("whales") pay the bulk of the income. Up to 50% of revenue comes from 0.15% (15 in 10,000) of players ("white whales") in one report.[34][35] It is not unlikely for a very few players to spend tens of thousands of dollars in a game that they enjoy"
It's sad, but actually they probably made quite a lot of moneys with quake champions already.
Before going free to play for the first of the 2-3 times they made it free to play and back, the game sold several tens of thousands of units. I don't remember exactly the price they sold it at, probably around 35 dollars?
They might have made around 2-3 millions dollars of income by sheer game copies alone.
Again, i don't remember exactly the numbers and i don't care too much, but someone else surely remembers. It's easy to calculate how much they earned that way.
They "developed" the engine for peanuts thanks to their russian slaves at saber, and that's the bulk of the cost for a game like this.
The rest cost little to nothing, take a look at the "promotional" clips, they look like some teenager made them with a pirated copy of an editing program in a boring afternoon.
Also let's not underestimate the microtransactions, players always have that distorted view that since myself i wouldn't spend moneys on those abominations, then nobody else does.
It doesn't work like that at all, especially with a community of grown ups like quakers. A lot of people here works and are far too eager to be separated from their hard earned moneys ASAP.
And everyone should know about the concept of "whales" in videogaming. Almost all the microtransactions volume comes from something like 3-4% of the players. Ultra wealthy or ultra obsessed people that spends gross amounts of moneys on ridicolous worthless stuff, averaging it out for the rest of gamers that wouldn't or couldn't.
As dumb as ID is and the rest who owns the rights. They know QL is the superior game between Quake Champions and Quake Live. So they won't make it free even if it brings them more players and that jazz.
Maybe because QC kinda sucks? No offense, but since QL is more popular, of course they won't make it free (for now). And anyways Quake is a becoming a dead game now, so they need their money right? Maybe it'll happen with LOL, which is also becoming a dead game rn. yeah ok i should stop talking...
You've already asked this exact same thing not too long ago. It's a shame you just can't even grasp basic commercial concepts.
Why would they make a game free when they can milk some more money from the very few who still buy it?
Unlike QC, QL doesn't have any in-game stuff to buy so the game sales is the only revenue stream left on it, which isn't much but still something as opposed to nothing at all.
QL isn't free, but neither are any of the previous quake games for those specific reasons.
Also, making a game free means putting the game in the spotlight and attracting players who just want free games. They've just done that with QC in order to attract more players, it would be a dumbass move to do that with QL now while they're struggling to get players on QC.
I know logic isn't your forte, but use your brain sometimes please.
Because they were trying to get an audience and making money from premium and pro subscriptions, just like QC is free now but money can be spent in game. Genius.
And obviously they're supposed to agree with you and admit that QC is shit and that they failed so their only option is to make a 20 year-old game free to showcase that it's superior than their current new game, and get people to play the old game without any commercial incentive.
The QL Steam trailer states without a doubt that the game is free to play. Perhaps if someone made Bethesda aware of this fact they would make the game f2p.
Ive shown QL to numerous friends who wanted to try it out but didnt want to pay the 10 euros
Dont get why they would do that unless theyre afraid of it beating champions in terms of numbers
