It's fundamentally flawed at the foundation; the cheap, outsourced engine. Add to that the other glaring flaws in sound and visibility for a triple threat to fail. Incompetence all around, in Zenimax's management, in SyncError's appointment as lead designer, in Saber's engine. I called it long ago. At least Diabotical will have a shot, eventually, since the stage has been set for a proper AFPS to claim everything QC will lose.

Given the incredible ineptitude of the developers it's incredibly easy to attack the game and the people playing , advocating and streaming it. Although I don't propose to abate this criticism; I do think it's worth pointing out that, in reality, the number of players and streamers pretty much reflects its quality as a title. We behave as if QC is some AAA monstrosity the likes of PUBG, soiling the heritage of competitive Quake - and this is pretty much what it proposes to do in spite of TWillits' rhetoric - and yet it is not a monstrosity. In its current state it is a complete failure which, every time they try to prop it up with some new update or novelty, persistently dies upon arrival. In reality there's very little in the way of popularity or quality to deride. The numbers do more than our criticism ever could.

I think it's what QC represents, in the extreme, that is most worth attacking: the current phenomenon of underdeveloped, F2P/P2W, character/class-based, e-sports-oriented bullshit titles with no interest in actual quality of gameplay or production. QC should have finished up about a year ago given the level interest, and yet the sheer profit-driven cynicism of its creators means we continue to see it as they add novelty upon novelty to it. And why on earth gamers allow this half-baked, outsourced mess of a game to continue to pique their interest is beyond me.

It lost half the playerbase in just 10 days. Wow, just, wow.

The devs made a chimera of a game trying to follow in the footsteps of games like mobas and Overwatch.

But it still isn't fun or easy to play for new age players: the abilities, for how dumb they are, aren't incisive enough.

They don't do much in the hands of noobs, while being completely broken and random in the hands of the pros.

The engine is a mess. The game is very heavy to run while having mediocre graphics, the worst water ever seen in a videogame since 2005 (it looks like transparent marmelade) , and the sound system is a chaotic reverberation of sounds that all sounds the same.

Despite what the devs think (eyegams of particle effects! kids will love it!) , this isn't pleasurable for anyone. All the random flashes and particles when picking up power ups and weapons and using abilities make the game very chaotic and difficult to read. Not what anybody enjoys.

The matchmaking is a mess, with geological waiting times, and the game always putting you in servers where you have above 70 ping (what in the fuck?)

Unlocking a new champ for a free to play player takes forever. It's the kind of stuff that made peole rage at ea with battlefront 2.

But yeah, it gives a real "sense of pride and accomplishment" to unlock a skinny ugly foul mouthed punk skank that only ever looked "kkool" in the minds of 50 years old programmers nostalgic for the '70s.

The champions, what the game should be all about, are a bunch of uninspiring, generic looking characters with weird proportions and facial features. The 5 stupid one-liners that they constantly yell for no reason are annoying after the first game.

Nobody really cares about skins and add ons because unlike in games like fortnite, you can't ever see them (make them out) outside of loading screens, and they're mostly terribly ugly, all over the place, and again, over bland weird characters nobody cares for.

It isn't over, the maps! The least worse maps are the ones from previous quake iterations. All the new maps are pointless, random, and/or too cramped and maze like.

The game is also too dark to see anything.

It tries to be serious and cool and edgy but at the same time has guys screaming about flipping tables and doing piroettes. Unironically, unlike in games like Team Fortess 2.

There's too much to change, and clearly not in the direction the devs wants to.

In other words, RIP.

I was honestly very surprised how many people tried the game during the free weekend. Let's hope that the launch has a similar effect given the free-to-play nature. Player retention is another issue.

The most popular Quake game online (multiplayer) ever was Quake3Arena and even then it quickly got shadowed by CS and other games.

Every single Quake game other than Q3A were very small games in terms of number of online players from launch to death, and those games were always played by small communities of hardcore gamers if you compare them to all the other popular games.

Q1, Q2, QW, Q4, QL, you name it, they were all minor games played by a very small number of players from start to finish.

You can deny it all you want and keep blaming ID Software for it, but Quake simply isn't appealing to the masses and will never be a popular game.

The evidence against this is a bunch of poorly made games failing, in an industry where most games fail. The evidence for this is that yes, easier for newbies, but still really complicated and very similar to old games have been made popular, even with some failures in development and publishing, such as Dota 2, CSGO, SC2...

And that Quake still commands a certain brand decognition, half-dormant. Look at the number of people that looked at QL, look at the numbers that even QC attracted during this free event, now imagine if everything was done right by a company that can push things...

I think that what gets popular is in large part accidental, depends on who can push it in the right ways, and clearly defies some very clear necessary direction, even if tendencies are there.

It is also funny how you can see the “failings” of community members here but not the contradiction in your own reasoning. Quake games had certain qualities that other games lacked for a very long time, and that is what we all fell love with here.
IDtech engines provided very solid foundations for the fans to perfect Quake games via modding, and offered state of the art graphics, precise control, etc. at the same time. Do not be mistaken, Quake games became playable multiplayer games because of the community and not because id software.

As you already stated, this special quality is not for the masses, and never will be, and I’m 100% sure the developers (and their caster, tester, pro gamer, etc internet minions) know quite well what this loyal and very faithful community dislike the most, yet they just keep doing exactly that (with an imagination and developing skills of a goat btw), destroying everything in the process until nothing will be left but a product which will be disliked both by the fans and the masses.

Yes QC isn't what quake used to be but it still has some fundamentals from it that you don't see in new games anymore (strafe jumping, item picking and timing, all the classic weapons, some of the maps from previous quakes, etc.)

You should just be happy that ID is even still trying to create quake games and that there are tournaments with money and most importantly pros playing in those tournaments whose games you can spec. Without QC all the known pro players we're familiar with would not be playing Quake today, they'd still be on overwatch or whatever else.

I gave QC a chance because unlike the majority here I am an optimist and I give things a chance before bashing them and going on a mad campaign in forums against it.

I never said or thought it was the future and what a modern game needs or that it had a ton of new players, however I saw it as a revival of the quake franchise and the opportunity to maybe get something good going.

The number of players was always a worry for me actually, especially if you compare it to other popular games out there, and the state of the game last year (the clunkiness, lags, etc.) was also a big concern for player retention and just overall for the game to stick around a bit longer.

Now contrarily to what you're saying I actually think QC is much more enjoyable to play now compared to last year and it's getting somewhere. I can actually play a couple of hours in a row without getting bored now, unlike the other quake games which have been overplayed. There's also been a recent peak of players and I can feel that when looking for games which I can't complain about.

I didn't misinterpret anything. First of all, steam charts is useless when interpreting trends because the "last 30 days" average is highly skewed until it gets closer to the end of month. Right now the last 30-days average is about the same as June because the 30 day window is mostly overlapping the previous month. Hence, while it shows the latest average is 5,879.5 players, the current 7-day average is only ~2,900 players, so if that trend continues for the rest of the month you will absolutely NOT see a stabilized number of players at 5,000.

But what has happened in the last three weeks is the peak number of players on steam has decreased ~73% from 14,123 on June 20 to 3,872 yesterday.

The point is that despite the significant amount of users who picked up the game for free or on sale during the summer sale, the retention of those players is very low and most are no longer playing. If your game playerbase temporarily increases tenfold, it means nothing if they all leave.

No one even remember what was there so it's fine.

The list of mistakes made in the development of this game is quite large, and I'm not sure where to even begin so I will start off what I do like: There are some parts of the maps that look awesome, the ranger dire orb (minus damage and telefrag) is cool and interesting powerup, and there are some cool new maps. That's it.

The engine is slow, buggy, unresponsive and is an amalgamation of code that goes back years and years, purposed and re-purposed for different games. The idea that some of the core issues plaguing the game can simply be "re coded" in an update is naive and myopic. The visual fidelity of the game does not match the type of hardware you need to run it effectively, and even when you have that hardware it will still have issues when it comes to responsiveness. The netcode is atrocious. The weapon design is atrocious. The character design is atrocious. The UI/UX is atrocious. I think ix described the visuals as "over designed garbage."

Next, the staff.

Whoever at id Software that was in charge of selecting which developer would actually create this game should be fired. Saber Interactive have a poor track record of straight to the bargain bin games and have had Microsoft cancel a project they were working on because it was shit. The sheer volume of developers and technology available in today's market should've put Saber Interactive somewhere at the bottom of any candidate list. I understand there may be a financial motive to select Saber Interactive but frugal developers will not give you excellent products and saving money in the short term could cost you much more in the long term.

Tim Willits for whatever reason put himself front-and-center of this project even though no one outside of Quake is even aware of who he is. Not only that, he continued to make a mockery of himself through ridiculous reactions and flip-flop statements. Eventually he did what he should've done from the very start, keep out of sight and stop giving out interviews. He seems to busy with Rage 2 now, that's good for Quake.

Now the lead designer SyncError... I'm not even sure what to say. I think they needed to do a better job of prototyping their ideas before investing in them because the current champions/skills/format simply remove the depth from Quake, which as an already tactically shallow game. Quite frankly in my conversations with SyncError he has demonstrated himself to be a knowledgeable person when it comes to Quake, its infrastructure and design philosophies but it appears he decided to go against as much of that as possible. I am somewhat sympathetic because I think up to Quake Champions the general consensus among the Quake community was that "something needs to change," but when the changes came they were (generally) negatively received. The community can be awfully fickle about what they want and most people couldn't tell you what makes Quake so much fun to play because most Quake players are clueless when it comes to these things. So I have to applaud him for at least demonstrating that things like different movement mechanics can work in the same game, and that champions/skills might be fun. That being said I do think most of the champions in this game are awfully designed (visually ugly as well), and most of the skills are either boring or just lame/anti-Quake (wallhack, invis+evasion, trip mines, dual wield, etc).

I was critical of id Software hiring ZeRo4 from the very beginning as the esports manager because he has no experience in it. I think he could've had a certain role as an esports ambassador but they needed an industry veteran to manage the LAN scene and to pool the veteran Quake admins into generating meaningful online leagues. The online scene is a series of disconnected random leagues and ladders all building up to nothing. There has been little to no media, promotion or coverage of these events outside of announcement posts and quite frankly no one really seems to care. The number of signups for these events are just abysmal considering a good chunk of them are giving out money.

Finally, there is a consort of community members that seem bent out of shape in defending in and every decision made, even when the design flips between the two sides of the coin. These people can live in whatever delusional world they want but this Quake game will be dead once the money runs out. Their refusal to address the core issues of the game will mean we will be left garbage once the developers deem this project "completed." Some of them (who knew) are profiting from the game and their positions on these matters cannot be taken in good faith. They seem to resent the idea that this game needed remarkable improvement before it's launch, and yes, the game is launched. No mental gymnastics about "early access" please. Anyone that has any idea of what modern consumers are like are aware that people don't really care about what state the developer thinks the game is in. Once they've purchased it or played it they have had the ability to make up their mind and the likelihood of them returning to a product they've already passed on is grim. Don't need to take my word on it, just take a look at steam chart.

Good post, but I'm not sure about this. The point is correct, but QC is kinda different here I think, for the simple reason that currently it costs money to play (quite a hefty sum too), but it will be F2P on release. The spike from the free weekend was quite surprising.
Still doomed to fail tho, because player retention and post-launch update frequency (the latter being the only way to generate new spikes, i.e. bunch of people trying the game out) will not be good enough to maintain a healthy and sustainable playerbase.

I think the spike goes to demonstrate that there is still a sizable market for a game in this genre with the right support and exposure.

I'm not completely comfortable with the corporate-speak that's come in the discussion about the community i.e. "player retention" -- it almost sounds like there is an employer/employee relationship (I'm aware that's not what you intended). Most people that play video games play for their own leisure, during their free time, and if they have fun/are challenged, they will stick around. They're not sticking around for lots of reasons and I'm not sure if all these things can be addressed. =/

but for some aspects I think this is an excellent summary. The amount of work, money and thought put into the engine, netcode, the decision to outsource and to whom really makes their claims about committment to the game a mockery. That's the part I always come back to. It was just a throwaway project for them. And telling quake fans to not be upset at that is ridiculous.

Yeah, I think you make a great point I totally overlooked. They entire means of funding or partially funding this game is just... bad. id Software/Bethesda do not need to rely on early access in any way and any quality control can be done with a closed group of members from the community. They have recently taken both the Doom and Wolfenstein franchise out of obscurity and back into the mainstream gaming consciousness, what makes Quake in any way different?

I think a main problem might be that Quake is more of a multiplayer franchise than Doom/Wolfenstein while AFAIK id has outsourced the multiplayer for every game they made after Q3. They just don't know how to make non-singleplayer games and are too afraid or whatever to try.

Even though the playerbase have made it 100% clear what they thought of Quake 4 and how important they find the engine / smoothness of the game.

The funny thing about that is Q1, 2 and 4 were primarily focused on the SP. Yes, it's the MP that gave the series its longevity but Quake has pretty deep roots as an SP game.

I would love for a well fleshed out SP Quake game with strong writing, voice acting, and design. Keep it simple and focus on what makes people enjoy Quake: fast, hectic gameplay. Add in: modern progression systems, allow players to play the campaign in co-op, clean graphics (Doom 2016), all on top of a buttery smooth engine... I know it's not easy to do all of these things but id have shown themselves as quite capable. This is what it means to take the franchise seriously.

The MP should not just be an afterthought like Q4, it should focus on 4V4/5V5 teamplay (QWTF2? NTF2?).

They should do a SP Quake game? Not gonna see that anytime soon, because Doom is a much better brand for their next SP FPS game.

To be quite honest until the recent Doom and Wolf games, both of those franchise were on life support, much like Quake is today. Doom only "stands for something" because they were able to successfully relaunch the franchise with a critically acclaimed game.

Regarding QWTF, it doesn't have to follow it strictly but if you look at games like: TF2 & Overwatch that have a legacy in QWTF, you will see they are very successful games.

I'm just too old to play a tryhards-only game, but one that has no money or reputation involved for other than 2 to 4 people in the world. QC is stuck in a weird limbo. Guess that applies to most of us.

The reason is QC just can't be played casually. You have to ask people to play with, usually super try hard duel, because the match making for FFA just takes unacceptably too long. Or the actual gametypes aren't friendly to play with non-Quaker friends: none have breaks, none have objectives and you can't even queue with friends to play FFA. And if you find a match, half or more of the players are bots. So might as well play something else with my friends, and we do. I actually preserved many of my Quake pals from the 90s, and in recent years our "Quake" has been OW and Rocket League. Casual Quakers dislike QC.

ok can't play casual so then lets tryhard. At my age I'm not going to tryhard something without money, reputation, tournaments or opportunities on the line, even if small. BTW, did I mention that in SA there's not a single tournament going on, and there's no teams, and not a single person in history has ever been sponsored as a Quake player? No sponsor, no trips, no tryhard play.

Speaking of which, there's no actual sponsors in QC, other than TL. That goes to show outside this group no one cares about it. QC has 2 proplayers (rapha and dahang -- so two competitors) and only clawz made money out of this, provided everyone else can make more working. Also there are very few sponsors in the world, to the point not even tox and cypher have one (the second and third places in the last LAN duel tournament), and the rest are mostly nonames that provide at most a peripheral a year. And again, not even the top2 and top3 in the world have a sponsor willing to even give them that and their little reputation, because QC is irrelevant.

So the game is dead on both accounts. After the DH qualifier from last year the game died for me, because people stopped playing and now is filled with bots (can't play casual), and there's nothing to play for now that not even trips are covered and there's no sponsors (no reason to tryhard). I just wished I could have actually tryharded last year, rather than being busy at work and uni (hadn't opened the game in a month and actually took an exam while at DH).

QC was a wasted opportunity both as a game and personally, and Steamcharts shows we are watching our hobby dying with each passing week. Not even being the one F2P game marketed at E3 saved it: there's no hope.

There's a reason CA was almost always the most popular mod in quake. For one, because it doesn't take a fucking lifetime to become a fraction as good as good as cypher/rapha (in a mod as mundane as duel no less). There's a whole lot of planning involved at the core of the gameplay in all traditional mods of quake and people just don't have the patience or the attention span for that shit. That one reason is what made the quake community one of the most diverse, but divided communities in any game I’ve played.

When one mod was not able to fully satisfy a player's needs, that player always sought to satisfy those missing needs in other mods. When that proved fruitless, he'd either quit or build his own mod. Unfortunately this is what fragmented the community and made it very elitist. Naturally, this trend turned duel into its frail 'e-sport' backbone which eventually became the leading cause for the whole genre's subsequent downfall.

QC made an attempt at stitching all the missing elements together, but failed miserably, because ultimately, the culprit lies in the vague nature of arena fps, not the shortcomings of a development team trying to reignite a relic of the past.

All I see in this thread and this website after so many years is the same unsavory picture - 0 consensus. The same lack of consensus is why the series never managed to peak past 20k concurrent players for more than 6 months.

I'm not arguing the complexity of CA vs other gametypes as there's nothing to argue about. But i am speaking for the casuals when i say that it's the very simplicity of CA that attracted and retained most of quake's player base - casuals.

Even when it came to CPM, arguably the most pompous and elitist bunch of all; they had the smallest player base, their best dueller could barely measure up against the mid tier of VQ3...and their most popular gametype was NTF - the epitome of casual gameplay when it comes to quake standards. Which is nothing but equally hilarious and tragic in the grand scheme of things.

It's very poor reasoning to think that if you took CA away from people, they would go play FFA/TDM/CTF, because that presumes that the number of Quake players is fixed. No, the number of Quake players is not fixed. If you took Clan Arena away from people, they would just stop playing Quake, and FFA/TDM/CTF would still be dead.

I'm saying that they could learn a thing or two about what made some mods / gametypes as popular as they were and try to build a new game around that. They could borrow some of the most popular characteristics of every gametype, blend them with some of the mechanics and gameplay principles of other games like cs/tf2/ow/br, and produce an entirely fresh game -- which, admittedly, would hardly be an arena shooter, because that genre was simply done for.

Instead, we got a class-based model latched on the same paleolithic gameplay design that drove off most newbies. Either way, QC was not meant to resemble much of the other quakes besides the name.

Im from Australia and I have trouble to find matches in this game. I know you dont care about that anymore than I care that some dude from Antarctica cant find a match, but still.

We had stuffed netcode for most of last year, servers that are spazzing out for 5 seconds every 30 seconds. An engine that is just outright inferior to the idtech (you know idtech, the fkn QUAKE ENGINE that idsoft has the source code too)....

We have no mod support.

And this still isnt bad enough to make me stop trying to play because I like the movement I guess...

But the absolute nail in the coffin for me is the matchmaking and difficulty to join a server.

No I will not sit for 25 minutes at 7pm staring at a menu hoping somebody else comes along and a duel starts. No I will not sit for 3 hours staring at that menu if the time is 3am.

And to top it all off I join into FFA and at the end of the match they send me back again to this god dam menu? NO. I wont do it. These are decisions the DEV's made and honeslty they can go fuck themselves.

Add a fkn server browser, load the next map. do something!

Before 2015 it was lame, but when QL got steam workshop support it became a very popular mode.

Id say there were many mistakes ... progress too slow in terms of features and also no shame to release badly developed features as for example the bots, which are just shit, anyone remember reaper bot from q1 which is probably older than 15 years now? Much better bot than this crap, it would have been maybe ok if they were optional for custom games, but they force these crappy bots on the players in standard games ... also the playerstats site has really a lots of bugs, if I released such a crappy site in my company to maybe 50 users I would get fired, but they have no problem releasing that crap to 10000s of players ...
they also didnt really know what they want, they had too many mods, like sac, tdm, duel, ffa, instagib ... 5 mods, this is not working today, this splits up the community too much, they try to get rid of that with the playerlists, but too late imho, its something they hsould have done from the start, and they should have really reduced the number of mods.
Duel is fine and the roundsystem is not so bad, but they should have tried to come up with a better team mod. Sac is basically ctf, a mod which exists in many games, but is not really popular anywhere, imho. they should have come up with a better version of tdm, maybe something like defender/attacker and mix that up within the game ...
also they are changing gameplay too much, which upsets players, they should have gottenthings right from the beginning and only add minor changes ... also not sure if gibs and horror settings really work nowadays to attract players or if streamers want to show this to their audience, dont see what would have been wrong with graphics just as in OW or Diabotical

Quake Champions is like a brady bunch version of AFPS. It is also only surviving off of hype, and the gameplay is the least supportive of competition out of every Quake game. A game with a competitive scene keeps the game alive and pushes new boundaries in terms of how the game can be played, as it's about finding new ways to win that cash.

Besides my pathetic joke, I would like to pinpoint that with quite similar ingredients a great game was made (apex legends). Great ? Yes, people are playing it. And, it is not about graphics or FPS or amazing skins and shit you can add to characters.
I know Quake as some legacy to carry and rules to be preserved (fast moving, fixed spawn of weapons and armor...), but battle royal is the standard now.

The games has energy weapons and energy ammo that's a lot more rare then others, you would think that's because they kick so much more ass, but they don't at all... so why the fuk would anyone pick them up? These gamedesigners are about as genial as Mr. Pyle, although they try patching trivial fails like this a lot faster. + 2 useless '"legends" who's abilities do more harm for your team than for the nmy.

thats a problem, you rely so much on teams, I mean watching shroud play apex is fun, but he has also 2 professional gamer team mates with him who are just as good as him (but only have like 100 viewers on their stream unlike his 60.000 plus, lul) ... which basically allows him to storm through hordes of noobs in rambo style ... you cant replicate that with some random team as a normal amateur... so for you as a normal player it really is just a walking simulator most of the time ... in quake ctf you also rely on a team, but in tdm its a bit different its still teamplay, but you can also shine individually, and your performance doesnt vanish in the overall team performance ,,,

I heard all the kiddos disappointed by apex legends will move to QC now that it has 'classic' duel.

To be honest, I finally had time to play Apex. And... yes, like another guy said it is a good hiking simulator. You spend like 95% of your time looting and traveling from place to place. Quake is not perfect but far more entertaining by the mean it has action (fight), always.
Nonetheless, numbers are speaking, battle royal is more on the trends and people are ready for this 95% of the time boring game.
What to say ? It is like that.

no idea, think they're working on a new map skin.
not sure if there is going to be any quake at Quakecon either as it's doom focused
still the delusional people on the reddit sub still think the game is doing well and heading in the right direction.
