I am not sure, but he was pretty inactive lately, his last game probably was quake 4, and when was that? Back in 2005/2006? .... so its a decade ago he was active ... he made a living mainly of his brand since then and he still has a name, but being inactive for a decade his brand declined also and most younger gamers dont know him anymore ... he tries to make a comeback as a professional gamer now, this time as a streamer .... his stream is good imho. and he has about 200 viewers ... this might not be too much, but it is something, a good base to start from, the new generation just doesn't know him, just like they don't know quake (try to compare viewers in twitch from qc and pubg) ... who knows what time will bring ... Shroud from C9 also had 30.000 viewers yesterday in pubg, and fatal1ty is also not that bad in the game, I give him a chance that he can make it ... its just sad hes not really anymore available to europeans with his time schedule, he starts at EU midnight time ...

I disagree about having a lot of viewers if you are good. Can't really think of any successful Quake players who have high viewers on Twitch. Well as high as 30,000 anyway.

i remember, when i attended quakecon 2010 with press credentials, i invited some family members along. my aunt, who was around 45 at the time, and her sons, who were around 10 and 14. they saw some of the matches going on, and their only comment was: wow, that's fast.

neither of the kids were interested in quake in the slightest after the event, and even i wasn't. this was before i was even playing quake live (i remember i was playing warsow at the time, back when jehar was doing weekly KOTH tournaments), and i attended this event to meet up with other warsow players, to see if i could meet some icons (i managed to shake carmack's & fatal1ty's hands by sneaking in to a closed door session before todd hollenshead threw me out, and also asked rapha for his opinion about tyryl before one of rapha's final stage games [can't recall his response now]), and to conduct an interview of quake live's then-manager steve nix (who i think saw the writing on the wall and abandoned ship) and syncerror (who eyed me like an abused dog who was worried that i might do something violent).

anyway, the point i wanted to make is that quake live doesn't connect with large subcultures in such a way as to promote a desire in the majority of popular gamers to look further into it, and the timing of quake champions is unfortunately late, since people have so much time invested in other arena fps type games that to switch to champions would mean giving up a lot of investment in other games (cs:go and overwatch, as examples).

the kids who were with me were popular gamer types, who loved halo and call of duty, etc. there's nothing about quake champions that is appealing to these people from an aesthetic perspective. they see quake champions, and they see dinosaurs and dumbass characters like anarki spouting obnoxiously cheesy one-liners and there is no cultural connection for them.

the best thing that id software or bethesda or zenimax or saber can do before the official launch is to secure some modern, culturally relevant within the past 10 years characters as champions. iron out all of the major bugs during beta, and right before launch announce that halo's master chief, call of duty's so-and-so, ubisoft's assassin's creed guy, namco's pacman, and so on are all going to be champions.

at least in this way they could generate some release day sales and get a ton of fresh players in who will play simply because they are attracted by some agreeable aesthetic, or 'judging a book by its cover'.

every champion should have his own themed level that contains nostalgic references to his game series, btw, similar to street fighter or the smash series.

i think that if id software had the testicles to do something like this, it would be their best shot at actually appealing to modern gamers.

think of how awesome it would be to play as pacman, and you activate your ability...you start chomping toward your enemy, and if you eat him he dies instantly. that would create some intense quake memories. imagine the commentary if rapha were to win a quakecon title by chomping somebody with pacman.

or imagine having a cs terrorist whose ability is to create a crate an indestructible crate he can camp behind, or gay tf2 character who can do something stupid, or the chick from portal who can create portals at some interval frequency.

there are so many options here to create public interest, but i don't think id software or bethesda are smart enough to see this, and even if they are smart enough to see it, i don't think anybody directly involved in the project is enterprising or imaginative or resourceful enough to even begin to care to make it happen.

instead what we get is unimaginative shit that forces contrived and uninspired abilities onto shitty quake 3 characters. why does ranger have some magic teleportation ability? why does this dinosaur puke acid? why does anarki inject drugs (and isn't this just a great way to gain spectators on a national level!)...and who gives a shit about any of these awful characters?

they need the skyrim guy with the horned helmet. they need megaman. they need shit people care about in order to attract anybody who doesn't care about the 3000 player strong niche id software catalog history. the power of nostalgia isn't there, and hasn't been there, since quake 4.

They'd have to pay Valve, Microsoft and several other companies money the development team doesn't have and if the game flopped they'd just be out of a lot of money in the end. Just from a business perspective that is a pretty risky investment. There really just isn't any money in Quake. I think there are several things to complain about but really the poor performance of the game is my biggest one. Who wants to play a first person shooter game that doesn't run very well? Very few people I assure you. Really pales in comparison to the Doom idtech6 engine and multiplayer performance. Hopefully this will get better. Anyway the teleportation and telefragging ability is a reference to how you defeat Shub-Niggurath in Quake 1.

Team games are so much better for that, or if you are really hardcore when it comes to content creation, if you can daily upload some self-edited gaming videos where you're actually not a boring fuck sitting behind a webcam playing the game, then you might be able to pivot off of that.

if you want people to stay around your stream, you either have to be:
a: exceptionally good at the game
b: funny and generally a likeable person

DO:
1:Read the chat, interact and have a webcam. Talk even if nobody is there (if you watch your own stream, it is 1 viewer, so it doesn't look like you are talking to yourself).
2:Try to involve lurkers / afk-ers, but NOT like calling them out, and ESPECIALLY NOT by name. Tell some stories you did in real life, you heard or whatever comes to your mind. Ask questions about general, everyday stuff, like you want to know your viewers, and you are interested in them (obviously not NSA/creepy stalker level). There are many lonely people on twitch, and just showing some interest can make them feel better about themselves. Create a bit of a bond, and they will keep showing up for your stream, for you. Be positive and uplifting, if you aren't, fake it. Toxic behaviour drives off people. This is exactly like picking up girls. You are in a bar or home-party. Nobody will come for you, you have to get them interested. In the bars you go drinking, but stay for the company. On twitch they come for the gameplay, stay for the company. You are picking up viewers.
(Quantum mechanics of the internet: anyone may or may not be a girl until checked.)
3:Stream at regular time-frames, so some people can expect you to be there. It doesn't need to be super-long (1-2 hours is enough), but be steady with it, so they can rely on your entertainment or company.
4:Make sure you don't have technical issues. Stream with a good quality, at an acceptable bitrate. Think about mobile users, who cannot play 1080p@60fps, because you don't have partnership and quality settings. (Also 1080p@60fps would require really high bitrate and bandwith) Higher resolution doesn't necessarily mean a better quality. If you cannot encode it well, it will only look like GIanT PixELs eVEryWHerE OMG... Make sure your CPU can handle the encoding. Test it offline. Make sure your internet can handle your stream. There is a testing option for twitch, where you put something like "&testing" (<- not actually) to the end of your stream-key. That will tell you your framerate in the twitch-inspector, but you will not go online. In the OBS logs look for dropped frames, due to encoder or network. If both are below 1%, its good. Have a friend verify the sound volume and the final stuff when you go online. You don't need state-of the art stuff, just make sure they can see (and hear) YOU, instead of the buffering circle.
5:Try to get some friends to kick-off your stream. Some people will join your stream more likely if you have 2-3 viewers instead of 1(0). Having someone talk (write) to you will encourage new people to write as well. (most people won't write to an empty chat)
6:Do not expect success. Sometimes viewers come, sometimes they don't. You maybe had a steady X viewers, and next time 0. Nobody comes. Maybe not the next time either. Maybe they will in the future.
7: do NOT just copy popular streamers. You will be just a cheap copy of Popular_Streamer_X. Who would watch someone with no individuality if there is already existing an original, better version of it.
8: host people, who might host you back
9: check your stream sometimes if it works as intended. Better with a 2nd monitor, but some alt-tabs do fine.


do NOT:
1:do your stream setup / calibration live. That takes a lot of time, and people will quit after 2-5 minutes max.
2: put on a donation bar / banner / whatever if you have a low viewership / quality stream. That's like you are here just for the money. Seriously, what kind of money are you expecting from 10 random viewers?
3: play a really niche or widely unpopular music. Music can alone drive people away. Many people also listens to other music while watching streams. (do not force your favourite "demon-summoning industrial remix of k-pop vs washing machine feat. Pit-bull" song on your metal-loving possible-viewers) (playing generally accepted songs are ok though afaik)
4: stream notificansons for follows or whatever that is, don't necessarily make your stream better. Playing the SAME GOD DAMN gif like everyone else is using means you are just like the others, and there is no incentive to watch you over them. (if you have some original or creative idea then do it, that is good!)
5: jump from game to game in short time intervals, or leave your game for another one you don't know just 1 single person. (especially if that has low viewer numbers)
6: Just sit there playing, with a cam, not caring about your viewers. (why do i even write this down, if the Do #1 & #2 says this? Because it's really easy to forget about it, and just play your game without doing the entertainer/streamer job)

Also decide what you want to do with your stream, how much time do you want to/can spare on it. Is this a hobby or do you want to go "pro". If you manage to go pro-streamer, is that really what you want to be?

Fatality's problem as a streamer is that he's an asshole. He's always been, but 15 years ago he was at least somewhat charismatic and an inspiring asshole. Now he's just a bitter one.

That's why people don't watch his stream: he's the kind of guy to insult his viewers and become all butthurt if someone said something that isn't a compliment.

If you're gonna be a successful streamer- we're talking of living out of it- you're either

1- in the best 10-20 players of a (popular) game
2- funny, entertaining, original, pleasurable to watch
3- have a pussy
4- a combination of the above

Short recap: Don't meet your heroes aka Fatal1ty being Fatal1ty. He got paired on a short notice with some guy to play in CodeRed (Dr Disrespect) tournament. Didn't know much about the game, started seeing the matrix numbers in his head, throwing strategies left and right at his team mate, doing his typical let's be passive and prey on the wounded. End up with 0 kills and a team mate who rage quit at the end. Both perspectives while they are still on Twitch

Saw his name pop up in a Code Red tournament and I was like damn son for real, lets see how he handles Call of Dudy. I watch him practice with his buddy learning the game asking the questions. Meh, just as expected he plays like him and Cooller played Battlegrounds, snake in the grass, no fart noises and get destroyed by some guys bunny hopping like it's Quake. 15min of camping just to get back in the lobby. The thing that caught my attention here is his team mate who got a little agro with him a few times. I mean come on bud it's your friend Fatal1ty, you know what his personality is like, even in Battlegrounds he expected everybody to back his ass, to revive him even if it meant the entire team goes down, It's the MOTHERFUCKING Fatal1ty BRO!, it's never his fault, he always has a strategy in a game that has no strategy. The guy is seeing the matrix numbers and pulling equations like it's a 300IQ match against Rapha. The entire premises of this crappy tournament is not to kill other streamers/pro's but to frag as many noobs as you can find and the team with most frags wins! This means rushing, this means either landing hot and relying on finding a weapon + your aim + leaving with 10 kills and going after more players so the other team doesn't get them. Guess what Fatal1ty did none of this his entire strategy is to camp in houses like it's Battlegrounds, and the fights they did get involved in they got outplayed. His concern was mostly for his team mate to stick to him, to play in a strategy he crafted 5min ago, to get the right gear, and to kill 1-2 from a distance, but its ok if they can't they can just get back in the house. Guess what 0 kills. Holy shit balls, this is from a guy who just installed the game, who specifically got paired for this tournament with what looks like experienced guy to show him the ropes.
Because I watched the Fat stream first it took me a while to sense something was off and his team mate was actually getting triggered. I figured meh its Fat everybody knows his douchebag personality right? I didn't fucking know this guy is first time playing with Fata1lty, probably even looking up to him judging by his douchebag Quake 1 cap he was wearing. Well you know what they say, never meet your heroes, rule number 1 right there. Anyways, I went to check out this Sav1 guy's perspective and it made me laugh so much, he is back talking him the entire time to his chat. Most of the stuff were actually on point. They are down by many frags so need to go balls deep on the next one, no passive play. Fatal1ty starts talking to Sav1 about 3rd personing people for a solid minute. Sav1 meme's emotes to their team mates (who are their opponent) says " I didn't hear a thing Fatal1ty just said " xD

Sav1 "I'm actually feeling hot in my face from how angry I am, at what just happened right there. I don't CAMP buildings, this isn't fucking PUBG. This is the most triggering game I've ever played. I want us to actually lose so I can be done with this"

In case you are wondering what's with the quotes, those links won't be available forever. This was pretty entertaining to watch and I'm hoping for some more legendary moments with ma man Fatal1ty. Still this is no where as close as my top 1 moment, when he was in FFA when Quake Live launched "THEY ARE FOCUSING ME!!!"

Back in 2007 before I picked up Quake at all, I saw Fatal1ty as a Champion and a unique person because I had never heard of anyone actually making a career out of playing video games. I had never come in contact with Quake people except IRL, and I didn't ever see any videos of Quake until Quake 4. By the time I actually did see some competitive matches, they were around 2007 when Fatal1ty was making his mark on Quake 4 and I also saw or heard of him in UT2004 to some extent.

The people I used to play in Unreal Tournament weren't even close to as good as he was. I suppose if I were to put it any other way, he was like an all star or a game celebrity of some sort. Going between several different games and winning big money tournaments. It was funny, I was in New Jersey and I saw him and stermy on GTV or whatever. There was this channel that was like cribs for GAMERS, it was really interesting. I felt like I was watching a fucking fairy tale, and wondering to myself how lucky these bastards are to have a giant mansion and a swimming pool and hot chicks everywhere. I actually LOL at this memory sometimes.

If we're talking the best player ever, no. He is probably the most successful PRO gamer of that time period in terms of earnings and making a living. That was mostly brought on by his career choices, brand etc. No one else did anything like that. He chose a sort of path that was common with professional skateboarders, making a company and selling merchandise.

I did get to play him some in 2017, a little TDM and Sacrifice... and to be fair. I could tell that he was actually pretty good at one point in time, but in terms of today's standards... meh. He fell behind quite far. Not to say that he couldn't be great again, but I didn't get the feeling that I was being out played in any of the fights. He was really no different than anyone else I have faced during my time playing. Rapha, DaHanG and Zero4 each have shown me talent when I got a chance to play them. Rapha plays so... weird compared to everyone. Aggressive, passive and defensive at all of the right times, in pretty much any gamemode. The positioning is like his middle ground between making those choices.

Now he's irrelevant but no one will take out his achievements. He was best in the world for some time and deserves respect. I'm not intereseted in his streams neither his products however the brand itself is aesthetically good so if the products are good I would not see a reason not to buy it.

Time was that his contrived and self-serving public image was justified and substantial, because he was young and had real in-game skills and achievements.

Nowadays he appears to straddle the divide between obscurity and fame. In fact I know little of his current activities. It doesn't appear that he's doing very much at all. Regardless, does not utilise his former skills in any meaningful way, while his achievements in tournaments are long-past. Those achievements have also been called into question by what appears to have been extra-strategic attendance and one particular instance of an alleged match-fixing plot.

Over time this has not only alienated him to the industry but in the eyes of those who know him, particularly the Quake community that he originally emerged from, this has amplified the falseness of his public persona. I think that one way he could have earlier salvaged his credibility would have been to use his fame in the realm of coaching and training. Notably, he appears isolated and doesn't appear to have fostered connections such as the likes of makaveli who has recently re-entered the scene (this is total conjecture of course). It's possible that there was some mentoring going on with his fatal1ty brand but this appears to have been focussed on sponsorship and esports marketing.

Training and coaching is still a real possibility for him, but like many others he is to some extent a victim of AFPS' failure to gain significant popularity in this new era of esports. The games he is good at just aren't popular and to be fair this has significantly limited his opportunities to be involved in a game that he has expertise in.

But this was a major issue from very early on in Quake 3, and when the money started to dry up he transitioned very quickly into a more popular game, and so on until the death of Quake 4. At no point did he feel the need to disseminate his understanding of the games or the industry for the benefit of the Quake series. That's not something he himself could have changed necessarily, but it's not a good look either. In this sense I think he contrasts rather starkly with others such as rapha and 2GD.

I think fatal1ty stated several times on stream that he didnt like the idea of champions in quake, and so is not really a fan of this game ... with opinions like that he of course wont get a voice.
He went to other games, because there wasnt any money to be made in quake, dont really see how rapha differs when he changed to ow and only came back for the new game QC with bethesda behind it ... and I am not sure why you name 2GD ...

I won't bother criticising anyone for not remaining utterly devoted to one particular title or set of related titles, although it is worth mentioning that in spite of transitioning to Shootmania and other subsequent titles in 2012, rapha has continued to compete seriously in Quake. But more importantly (and this is harder to substantiate) I think he is more cognisant of the importance of the community and the playerbase from which that springs. A good example of this I think is that he has been far more willing than fat ever was to share personal information about how he plays - his mindset and his strategies, even against particular players. Rapha clearly cares about getting other people involved in the game, and unless someone proves me wrong, I haven't seen fat behave in the same way.

As for 2GD, his past, recent and hopefully future activities in the Quake community (most of which don't need mentioning except, for instance, he put on a livestreamed online cup back in 2012 or something with the GD Studio) speak for themselves.

These other ex-players/players are not less self-interested per se. The difference is in their awareness of and contributions to the playerbase. Their cognisance of the fact that an industry centred around a specific gaming product that is interesting and exciting (Quake), mean nothing without the playerbase and the viewership.

And if myself and others are wrong to judge fatal1ty like this, then he nevertheless has a serious image problem.
