I love the changes, Slash new movement is fire, game feels smooth and sharp, Slipgate is so much fun to play

well game works almost good during lan's, nobody complained on hiteg or netcode afaik. ofc there were some problems with occasional total freeze but early access status ;)

QC is improving a lot and the devs are making the changes people ask for. It sometimes takes them longer than expected but if you look at the list of most wanted changes from the closed beta last year and look at the game now and the announced forthcoming updates, it's easy to see they are moving in the direction the community is steering them.

Upgrade from a potato router. Nothing wrong with the netcode.

I think that this game has the potential to be a lot more competitive than previous Quakes where in those versions the smallest mistake could be unforgiving and make it hard to work your way back into the game. In Quake Champions even if your opponent has played his game perfectly you always have an opportunity to make a play with an ability, which is why I personally love it.

To me their method of developing seems longterm, which alone is great. So many games seem to water down in focus over time.

I've actually had fantastic luck with the netcode. Almost never a hiccup.

Will I stand a chance?
I have not played a Quake game, and people have been playing them for longer than I have been alive...but I'm wondering if I would stand a chance in this game. I have only had experience with shooters (I did play Minecraft for a few years so I obviously understand first person and moving and aiming and stuff) for 6 months (when I got my gaming PC). In Fortnite specifically, I am not bad, nor am I great, just probably above average (from what I see in my games) by a bit, and I am a very fast builder. So, with all of this in mind, will I stand a chance in this game (specifically the Clan mode or whatever it is, whatever mode RocketJumpNinja usually plays)? Is matchmaking done by skill?

Oh boy I see these "To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to enjoy Quake Champions" pastas coming soon.

Trying to compete for mediocre income in a game that awfully changes with every patch at the mercy of the most retarded devs ever isn't exactly a dream job imho, it's probably super stressful. He can never know when the meta / dynamics are changed in way that he gets rekt by claws or raisy again before even getting to best 16 or something like that.

I think it was here that people added up his winning and divided it with the timespan, all coming out something below minimum wage. Years to come? In QC? Coach who?

He has more earnings than that, since he's been getting a salary for the past 10 years or so. Plus he gets money by streaming in Twitch.

Then a great thing about esports is that the prize pool comes in large chunks, unlike most professions, which allows to easily save and invest. Clawz literally fully-paid for a house with his earnings from three days of work. As such, if rapha is any real-life smart then he already has put the down-payment for at least two apartments and rented the other -since it only takes two good tournaments to do that-, or done decent moves in the stock market, maybe made money in cryptos back when it was a good investment, etc.

So lets do the math. 117k in prizes in 2018 + lets say only 12k in salary + a conservative estimate of 6k in Twitch + maybe 12k more in passive income = making more than any non-entrepreneur in the US that doesn't have a college degree, that isn't drug dealing, that didn't get the opportunity to become a top athlete as a child, and that isn't into a sport that causes CTE.

And that is especially while managing to save/invest over 100k a year, because of how his payments work. Most likely the vast majority here can't say this part: one thing is making 250k in Netherlands while everything goes into paying rent, while another is living in the middle of the US (cheap) and getting large one-sum payments that allow to actually make money at the end of the year.

What comes after Quake is switching games or activities, which is what pros do all the time. He could easily win in yet another game as a player, or retire to coach a team in OW (I recall his team got second place in NA right before OW League started), or cast matches of any FPS game (he has a solid reputation), or be the team manager in any game really (10+ years as a professional travelling the world).

Well or he could get a good real life job, like many former top Quakers have after their careers. We laugh about fatality's lisp but based on location his condo costs no less than a million. Or these guys can get really good at poker (like Lakerman did), or become solid entrepreneurs (competitors get that side well like Thresh for example), or study (for some reason there's many top Quakers with top academic qualifications), etc.

In the end before OW and QC I would have agreed with you, except for some specific names like tox (has always have a career outside Quake and made good money during his Q4 run), but now the winners and the top hobbists are finally getting some actual money for the time they spent in this.

At that time, the game hadn't come out, but anyone who is better than average at this game should understand or at least comprehend a brief idea of how different Duel would be with the added\subtracted gameplay functionality, as well as the round based system. At the time, before anyone even got to try Quake Champions, I had already accumulated that Nyx would get away with items for free. Anarki would be OP. Ranger's dire orb would break all kinds of combat mechanics, and help idiots with their horrible positioning skills. Sorlag's acid would assist heavily in damaging opponent's in close range fights. Visor's sight would be a problem for ambushes and sound whoring.

Little did I know that all of these things would be problematic, but it was even worse, there were more things like: Horrible audio tracking, no brightskins, aggressive dire orbs (telefragging), weird item respawning, tribolt, heavy\light OP machinegun starting weapon. Game encouraging bad aggression: going up jumppads against LG without knockback, absurd stack balancing, slow ass movement.

A close range damage attack assists in damaging opponents in close range fights, who knew!

Yeah, I started playing Quake Live a few weeks ago and liked it quite a bit. The movement, the weapons, the whole feel of the game is simply amazing. It felt fucking polished. It's not like - with OSP, and then CPMA - Quake 3 was unpolished. It was the absolute best in the genre. God, I love it as much as I love Mortal Kombat 3 (DOS).

But at my age, Q3 sucks the life out of me. You see, I have a limited stamina. If I force myself to punish that 5 ping monster that's been raping me, the next day I will be a cognitive retard and won't be able to perform my duties.

So, I went back Starcraft 2 and Quake Champions. I am all for servers. In fact I've been some public ones from time to time. But having matchmaking isn't a bad thing. All it needs is players. It lessens the frustration.

Anyway, QC has been getting better. The game has been running properly for months now. That's progress. Let's just wait for the whatever id comes up with after the new Doom.

In the two years since I first played QC the only improvment ive seen is that the servers no longer freeze up for 15 seconds every 2 minutes anymore. They added some hero's and like 2 more maps. I cant think of anything else that improved. Constant re-balacing and an OP new hero every 3 months isnt actual improvment.

I dont honestly see any progress at all. I think more advancement was made in toilet paper in the last couple years than QC.

It's easy to see how you can make the server fuck it up though because if player 1 has ping 100 and player 2 has ping 200....
Player 1 takes the flag on his pc at the 'real world time' X+50 and player 2 takes it on his pc at 'real world time' X...
The server will get a 'flag check request' at time X+150 (p1) and X+200(p2).
Both will perform a look back action (because it's unlagged nonsense) and at time X+150 - 100 = X+50 the flag is obviously there and gets attributed to P1.
then at X+200 the same request will be reach the server from P2, which will then check if the flag was there at X+200 - 200 = X... and yes it was there.

(I've simplified ping in this example and disregarded tick rate etc. etc. but the above is most likely what happens.
The 100 and 200 are always due to ping, the 50 is an in game offset aka p1 takes the flag 50ms later than the 'real world time X')

it's because the client makes some assumptions and the client didn't have a check for the flag carrier to determine whether or not he actually has the flag. it's a beta issue and a common problem that arises in any sort of decoupled code.

This is supposed to be a server-authoritative game, so for both players to be able to cap, the server must actually believe both players have a flag. It looks like the server has actually assigned a flag to each player irrespective of what the clients are doing.

The flags are picked up 6 seconds apart, so it's unlikely to have anything to do with backward reconciliation. Here's the video again:

Probably the server has assigned a flag to a player and then forgotten to remove the flag at the pickup point, somehow. Or maybe as a really bizarre extension of the client-side hit detection, clients tell the server when they pick up a flag, and one of those clients never got the memo that the flag had been taken.

that's...exactly what happened. the server updated the client. you can demonstrate that this occurred because the second flag carrier witnesses the first cap. the client does not check the updates to determine whether its flag carrying status is representative of the extraclient state of the game. how is that incorrect?

"Server authoritative" means that the server has the final say about what happens in the game. That means the server, not any client, decides whether your shot hit, a player picked up a flag, or a player capped.

In the case of hit detection, all previous Quake games had the server decide by itself based on player input. In QC, the client tells the server whether it thinks it hit, but the server has the final say in whether this is accepted as a real hit.

While waiting for the server, a client can predict what will happen, to hide the lag from the player (so that when you press forward, you move immediately, without having to wait for a response from the server), but those predictions will be corrected or confirmed by the server when the client eventually receives its next update from the server.

There is no need for the client ever to have any say in whether a flag is picked up. A client can choose to show a flag as picked up for the duration of ping---because most of the time that prediction will be correct---but if that prediction is not correct, then the flag will disappear when the next update comes in from the server. This is the same correction mechanism that causes rubber banding.

Maybe what you call assumptions and what I call predictions are the same thing, but in the server authoritative model, the server does not trust the client. A client does not say "I picked up a flag" to the server, and the server doesn't just roll with that. The server says, "you gave me this input, which has you picking up the flag, so show the player that you have a flag".

The server does not need the client's opinion about whether flags were picked up or capped. It does not have to trust the client for such information. All the server really needs is information about the player's input. That's how it worked in previous Quake games, and I must say it worked rather well. Networked games of this type are very possible.

Yes, (as I have said) clients are free to predict (make assumptions about) the game state in between updates, but those updates come in 60 times per second and ping is a few tens of milliseconds usually, so any incorrect prediction would be rather short lived---certainly not 6 seconds long as we see in the video.

We can only speculate about what is causing this bug because we do not have access to the source code.

This is an absurd way to design a game because any compromised client, or middle man in the communication channel, could cause these important events to happen at any time.

Want a player fragged (important event)? Just tell the server he was fragged. Want to pick up an item? Just tell the server it was picked up. Want to capture? Just tell the server you captured.

Even without any malicious users involved, the fact that every client would have this power would mean that the game state would continually be corrected to this or that client's view.

I gave one in my original post about it. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the most likely one.

It's possible the server code isn't so elegant, and in certain cases, the path taken through that code is one where the flag is assigned to a player without the flag being removed from the pickup point, leaving the flag there for another player to pick up. Or maybe the server tried to remove the flag and failed in doing so for some reason.

I think it's most likely a server-side problem because we can see that the game state being received by players from the server includes that the flag has already been picked up and that it is also still at the pickup point. What is seen lasts too long and is probably seen by all players, so on the server itself, two red flags exist at once.

You can see this by looking at the flag icons over the player icons in the team on the top left of the screen. At 9 seconds into the video, the other player picks up the flag, and it also becomes visible on the HUD. When d3th reaches the pickup point, he can see that the flag is there before he picks it up, so the server is most likely sending him a game state including a flag at both locations.

The second flag sits there for a full 6 seconds before being picked up, so I think it's unlikely to be the result of any lag compensation that is treated as authoritative. Hit registration was not even client-sided in QC until a few patches ago, so I don't see why something as extreme as flag pickups would be.

There have been other more common cases of bugs where there are phantom duplicate flags that every player can see and that can't be picked up. The server seems to be good at duplicating flags. The second flag in the video, too, is most likely seen by all players, meaning that it is coming from server game state.

Sure, it might be the result of some bizarre client-server interaction, but that's not where I'd start looking.

I remember hearing somewhere that this bug is already fixed internally, so it can't have been too complicated.

Interestingly, before the bug, a teammate was saying that when he died, he dropped two flags. That's probably where it all began. So he died and dropped two flags, and then two flags were returned to the enemy base to be picked up one after the other? :D

Nobody who has the slightest understanding of team based game types in fast-paced arena shooters (especially in ctf, which I played for two decades) would attempt anything like this, because it's just wrong, period. Making assumtions until the next tick or until the next syncing might be acceptable perhaps (for the sake of online gameplay experience), but this is different.

It's equivalent of a crossroads where the approaching cars from each perpendicular direction would be able to say if the lamp is green for them or red, and if both would say green, then the system would just set the lamps green, and let them crash.

With this kind of "solution", last moment caps, returns, all the fights for items and powerups would be nothing but random shitfests.

He bans people for valid criticism, that's shitty. But what's really bad is that he kept trashtalking quake legends like cypher when they were vocal about QC's problems. I remember him bashing cypher's skills on stream saying how he wasn't even remotely among the best technically, and started saying how he is a crap teamplayer... and that was all because in the weeks before cypher ranted about QC's performance, netcode, etc. Ha was quake god until then of course. So disgraceful. So much for his loyalty to quake, what a spineless creep. I'm getting games non-stop and smooth play too. With setting the configuration settings to what works best, this setting hasnt been completely obvious, I did have to try different things quite alot to get it smooth 100% of the time.

As far as I'm aware things are all on target for enjoying this on ultra settings when I make my new PC later in the year.

Compared to other new games I've been testing their betas, this by far is and always has been the best of the bunch by a massive margin.

Community sabotage is quite relevant. How much should people active complaining be weighted compared to the silent majority just enjoying a game silently. Obviously the people enjoying the game are least vocal in most games, - because they're busy playing the damned game! having fun - so drastic changes made my the complaining minorities that mostly active complaining about things, can seriously just ruin everything for everybody eventually. It's been known before yeah. In one game 200 angry players constantly making angry posts eventually got a game ruined once, and not realising the happy customers aren't around can bolster this minority quite easily, strangely the rest of the games population of some 12k players weren't there, surely they were enjoying the game. So the idea of over-weighting a minority can be a real issue.

Its definitely not the servers infrastructure, because it runs in a major cloudservice, it is the gamecode.
Game crashed at the beginning sometimes for me with newest patch, only with the newest nvidia drivers this seems not anymore the case, but still I get frequent stuttering in the beginning. Game menus look like they were designed by some graphics beginner. This game is now publicly available for almost 2 years, this should have been fixed 1 year ago and its still not the case ... and they tried to make the game suceed with game modes that were never really successful, i.e. CTF or Sacrifice (basically simple CTF) ... quake shines through its game mechanics, not through gameobjectivebased modes, they should have worked on making DM a much better experience, instead they are neglecting it ...with this trackrecord of having managed to destroy the legacy of one of the best known games of all time via Q4, QL and QC, I am wondering why the same people are still allowed to work on this title, they should be put on another project really ...

This is a known and sadly regular issue on the Rotterdam datacenter since December, which a check on the IP shows is run by I3D.NET.

I haven't seen this on any other EU server myself, you can deselect Rotterdam from the list, certainly I would if you're intending to duel.

It's not the only one. Warsaw has this issue too and it happens even on Frankfurt.

Its like if this happened there would be almost nothing to complain about anymore except netcode and abilities and mod support, which I dont think is the most major factor in angrying the playerbase and some would claim.

If its a tech issue its obviously one that slipped past when they did initial assesment of the engine for use in quake, or more likely they perfectly thought it would not destroy the playerbase with all the waiting and uneven games - waiting to just be disconnected or play a 4vs1 and then waiting again...

If this is true then somewhere along the line they learned that the menu/waiting simulator aspect of the game is detrimental to the playerbase

Even with continuous lobbies, there would be lots of waiting.
If all you want to do is frag, MM is actually the quickest way to form games out of waiting players---because it has access to all players waiting, not just those in a particular server.

For example, if you had two servers, one with 7 players and one with 9, the first server would be unable to start a game for insufficient players, and the second server would have a player waiting in a spec---a total of 8 waiting players that would immediately be put into a game under non-restrictive MM.

At the end of a match, the players would go from the playing state to the waiting state. They could just as well be put in a non-restrictive MM queue and be immediately assigned to a game if there were enough of them, which there always would be unless one decided to leave that queue or the game.

If the MM is not doing that, then it is either bugged or putting restrictions on which players can be matched---a capability that is part of the reason for having MM in the first place, but with the low player count now, it could just as well be turned off (and you would have the same level of skill matching that you can get with elo shuffle). But likely, the players are just in another queue (which the game has too many of), a choice the continuous lobby system makes players more content to do without.

As regards waiting, just as it is currently, loading time, intro screens, outro screens, stats screens, warm up, etc would keep players waiting before they are back in the playing state. Those delays could just as well be removed in the MM system. They don't want to remove them, so we can safely assume they wouldn't want to remove them in a continuous lobby system either.

The only significant saving would be the loading of the menu, which is only significant because of how unacceptably long it is in QC.

The main advantage to continuous lobbies is social. You get to know people when you play with them many games in a row. But for waiting, the concessions people are willing to make under that system (incomplete teams, joining mid-game, mid-game team changes, large team sizes, waiting in spec) could just as well make MM quicker if it were something people wanted, and taking players out of the MM system will only make it slower. An additional wait in the lobby system is the period of bickering and repeated callvoting that tends to happen before every match, which mind you, would result in a long QC-style loading period after each map vote.

Personally, I'm not a fan of team changes during games. It splits up parties and makes the outcome kind of meaningless. It's a bit of a crutch to keep a dead game playable, which makes me not surprised they're not willing to spend time developing it.

Cmon Taich, We used to sometimes play CA 2v2 Thunderstruck at 2am in the morning which is just not possible with QC - because it would take a whole 4 people in this region of the word to queue up at 2am which just is never gonna happen with QC. People arent queueing because the game wasted their time and they long ago left thats the whole problem.

I wont sit there for a 25 minutes queue trying to get a game at 2am, hence I dont play QC. For me this is the biggest problem with the game.

Most of the points your making against Continuous Lobby's are only possible to make due to other stupid restrictions of QC

ie. Cant start a game with 3vs4 or more than 10 players, well actually they can do that. Its not stoping anything. If a game plays as 3vs4 until the next round when somebody joins thats not a problem, a small concession to get the game rolling is all it is. Likewise why is it capped at 8 players. It should be 16 and some maps should be much bigger so nobody should really be forced into spec, and if they are again its just a small concession.

Intro, outro, stat screens are not really a problem. Stats could be in game and I can deal with a 5 second intro animation.

Im making concession myself when I ask for Continuous Lobby because what I really want is some kind of server browser but I dont think they would ever be that kind - I guess QC has just rotted our brains into making such concessions.

You know where we live does not have the playerbase for Quake MM, but somehow we never had a problem finding QL matches because the whole concept of that game was not plain stupid.

Edit: Now thinking about it. It could easily work as 8 players into a server with 4 spectator slots. Spectate could be optional so these guys can fill in slots of quitters, or wait for next round.

If you dont want to spec and the other server is full it should just drop you into a server by yourself so you can jump around and practice until player number 2 arrives and which point the game could begin as 2 player FFA or something until more players come. We could even have the revolutionary idea of "Callvote Gamemode" so that we can transition from FFA to CTF as more players fill into the server.

See these problems arent that hard to solve. The game is getting laughed at for low playerbase for no real reason other than its whole design is anti-player and outright stupid.

The way is see it is that, 5 years ago we would have maybe 30 or so people playing QL on AU servers every night.

Those people were only playing because of the convenience that they could insta join servers right now when they wanted.

Now Quake transitions into a game that makes you wait to join a server for stupid long times, and then disbands those servers and makes people wait all over again. Its ridiculous. No wonder the playerbase just left its obvious why.

QC could of have formed a community much larger than it has if it were not so painful experience to get into matches over and over.

I'll start by saying I don't mind the server browser system. It's what we all used for a very long time. But I can definitely see the benefit of having MM. With even a small number of players, a few hundred (more than Australia has), it's quite efficient unless skill matching restrictions are put in place. It takes the organizational work out of getting games at the expense of less control, but it also means you don't have to stuff around arguing with idiots or be at the mercy of whichever group has enough people to control the vote. You get to play with different people each game (good or bad depending on your viewpoint), and people can't invade a server in a group, and they can't follow you around. :D

You're talking about those same concessions I was referring to, so you see what I'm talking about. The system lets you create half-baked games for the sake of getting a game at all. That reduces waiting time, but the MM system could just as well be tuned to create your 3 goods vs 4 bads, your 8v8s, your lots of specs, etc. If it did though, people would complain furiously (like they did when it was starting games at 2v2).

One problem with the server browser system is that people forego trying to play the mode they want to play and instead just play whatever mode has populated servers. This is part of the reason that QL became almost entirely CA after the population declined below a certain point.

You'd get the same effect in MM if each queue listed the total number of people queuing. The unpopulated queues would stay that way.

Perhaps this is an easily-implemented feature they could consider adding but only available in regions with very low player count, such as AU. In fact, region specific tuning of the MM in general is probably something they could have done to get rid of those hour long wait times. They could also add a region specific "global chat" so people could talk to each other. Much simpler than what probably requires a redesign of their whole system.

The global population of QC is pretty low, but the EU streamers seem to find games in 30 seconds to a few minutes. It's not really a lot of waiting time on average when you consider that you don't have to wait ages for someone to give up their spot in a server or wait around in empty servers till people join. All those additional screens and the loading I talked about take up about half the waiting time in a lot of cases (in EU).

At least one good thing about MM is that it forces people to take turns. Consider you have a game of 8 players and 4 in the queue. When the game ended, 4 of the 8 would join the 4 in queue to form a new game, and the remaining 4 from the original game would then have to wait their turn. They could not just hog a spot in a server.

Anyway, when you have a very low player count, there's going to be waiting---even with server browsers. Maybe that waiting only becomes less apparent because you're doing it in the presence of others. The waiting time could probably have been compensated for by having more elaborate social features built into the game, but it seems it relies mostly on things like external discords for that.

When its peak hour 6pm in Australia the game has dropped to 450 players every single night acording to steam charts, and thats WORLD WIDE.

It means there might be maybe 20 people in Australia playing but none of them can even see each other due to 30 different game modes and inability to scan the list of servers and join an active one - so our only choice is the 30 minutes queue or just quit and I quit.

Edit: Remeber this game started out an Esport? Then they systematically destroyed small playerbase regions like Australia, Africa and Asia etc with these stupid implementations of everything.

They dont realise games like CS and DOTA etc became wordwide popular because the simple reason everybody in the world could play them but with QC you cant really say that. Just check the bethesda forums where the threads about how Africa does not even have a server anymore. This is not how you take over the world I am sure.

Going from quake 4 to QC,
Everytime feels like getting out of my new Lamborghini Huracan and sitting down into a 3 wheel bicycle, that sometimes has broken tires.

i installed q4 last week, first time in 10 years. very epic. playing the bots in q4 is more fun than playing humans in qc

the less predictable something is, the more depth it has. i hope u know that... qc is way more unpredictable than ql

ql duel was basically all strategy and nothing else, to the point where aim hardly even mattered... in qc atleast there is some aspect of skill involved

just one good patch with new content, some marketing and they can easily turn this around....
