Well, not entirely, but though it might not have been said in a nice way, yes, it's not organic growth, it was paid for (coming out of nowhere and then 25 million players in two weeks?), Apex is not that interesting to me, players do just move from one hypejob to the next, and what the Twitch streamers are doing has a lot of influence on that.

It seems to me that the gaming industry has always been about what is fashionable. There is some new big game that comes out, everyone plays it until it gets boring, and then moves to the next big thing. Apex is the big thing right now and it seems to be the highest quality BR game at the moment.

If I were into BR and had a good enough PC, I'd probably give it a go. All that hype can't be wrong. :D

It grew way too fast not to be the result of marketing. Being a good game just keeps the players there after they are already attracted by the marketing.

Shroud himself said that he couldnt wait to finally play it after months of testing with other streamers and devs, and now when its out he's grinding hard. But a BR game made by triple A studio sure will. People got tired of playing fortnite, now they have overwatch-cod-titanfall combo free to play BR thats actually well designed and has some new things.

Like I said, I'm not seeing that fortnite ad when I do that search. It's all Apex Legends related.

If I search "battle royale game", Apex Legends appears in the video games list at the top, and it's mentioned in the second link after the Wikipedia entry.

If I search "top games", Apex Legends appears 5th in the list. "best games", 8th in the list. At the top of the page.

The marketing is a significant factor, and using Twitch is the way to go these days, I think. But I'm sure they have other ways of reaching people. They just had to create this hype. It's not like a bunch of people just stumbled on this game and had their minds blown, and then by pure word of mouth, the population grew to 25 million players in just two weeks (10 million in just a few days), which is not really long enough for most people to properly asses just how good a game it is (I'm not saying it's bad).

I doubt whether 25 million people even know QC exists.

they had a ninja release, most likely influenced some streamers but if the game is dogshit you're not bringing in 25million players. This is just the best BR out there atm and everything that is annoying in other BR's is somehow improved in here. (waiting times, speed, ttk, no camping, loot balance, ...)

F2P game by a triple A studio. What do you expect? Of course it was going to be a gigantic deal. Especially when they had big streamers secretly testing it before launch. So day 1 you have folks like Shroud, DrDisrespect, and others with 500k+ viewers on Twitch.

To put that in comparison, that's about as many viewers as some major, prime time shows get in the US. And having it be 100% focused on your game is an enormous amount of advertising. Companies spend millions on ads to get just 30sec ads played during popular TV shows.

Yea, and 500k concurrent viewers can mean 10mil+ total viewers over the span of all the streams.

Just imagine that Bethesda had the opportunity to do this exact game with QC BR style and pump tons of money into advertising/streaming if only they had the foresight... I hate BR in general but with quake mechanics it might make it a little more fun.

BR is a risk. It requires a huge player count to work. They wouldn't be able to get away with stuffing it up like QC.

But if they had done that, I doubt it would have received a warm welcome here, like Apex seems to have. :D

umm sweety apex legends isn't hitscan. it has bullet speed and bullet drop. the game is fun and it's fast and easy to get in and out of.

u spend wasting time in searching fancy "loot" and after 15min you finally reach the endgame, which takes usually 1min max. wow. sounds fun...not.

what apex does better than other hypegames (fortnite,pubg):
- it feels very polished and finished
- better movement (still not enough though)
- abilities and better gunplay

It's free, runs well, and combines elements from all the previous battler royales in a smooth way. Much easier to get into than fortnite, too.

I hate the whole "realistic bullets" bullshit, its like hitscans with 200ms ping.

The guns in this game all seem very conventional, like real world guns, all shooting bullets or shells (or something that looks and behaves just like bullets or shells).

I guess you could say in a way they are "conventional, real world" about as much as the QL machine gun and shotgun are real world (not very).

Compare to pubg or CS not so much, where at least in those two they try to approximate the feeling of a pistol, AK47, M16, DMR, M24 Sniper rifle etc.

Apex is more arcade, energy weapons and stuff.

I shouldnt really say much as Ive tried to play Apex but suffer some kind of serious aversion to it that I cant quite put my finger why so i dont even know what all the apex guns are.

I think mostly I am struggling with the way it does everything the same as pubg yet in a slightly different way or with just different key combinations - thats probably what frustrates me.

As well as the whole lack of cover and stealth compare to pubg. Fights in Apex seem to be as if there is no cover, no +back tactic, everybody + forward into 10 meter distance shootouts and this excessive bullet sponge and time to kill aspect with some kind of shield/armor crap going on.

Its just meh i guess.

At the moment, it does just look like running around with the Q3 machine gun 90% of the time (while obviously all those guns have different stats).

I do like the look of the map though.

Idk man, i think apex fights involve a lot of "cover and stealth", and depending on what legend you use its quite easy to +back and for instance use a shield cell then go back into the fight.
For instance with pathfinder you can quickly grapple up to a roof or something to get out of a fight, with bangalore you get speed boost when someone shoots at you so you can do a 180 and run behind some cover, wraith has that stealthshit she can use etc etc..

The first 10 games or so i played i too felt it was quite +fwd and no way to get into cover but as i have played more and watched some streams of better players i learned how to fight properly

Falling from sky is basically just to choose your spawn.

Like in battlefield how you choose a spawn point, or other games just choose a spawn for you but here you choose your own spawn skydiving.

Apex is meh but that aside I wouldn't say I like BR games because of BR. Pubg is the only one I like and thats more because of the big forrest maps and shooting mechanics. The possible lols generated by running people over in cars or other sometimes funny things that can happen when you give players a bigger map and more freedom

If they took the BR out and made it some kind of deathmatch Id like it just as much or maybe more.

They had a game like that, was a very good shooter in my opinion, and nobody cared (obviously).

Yea this actually looks pretty good with the strafejump and fast movement going on. Shame I did not look into it just that it was an EA Origin game and I try to ignore them mostly.

I honestly no idea. Titanfall 1 had a huge marketing campaign, but it was not that good and was not really polished either, so EA rather pulled back on the money rain with Titanfall 2. Which is sad, because the game was quite good (it even had single player), and we know that nothing really sells without marketing... Yes, it felt weird toi install Origin and an EA game made by former COD creators, but I had a very good time with it, lots of great games. I played it for about a year then had to drop it for family and work. No clue how is the scene nowadays, it is dead probably.

ps.: it had "networks", which you could join based on your criteria and preference... it found games for you based on your settings

Because they have no longer updated the game, and the most watched streamer get upsed for this, they said the next update will be available in june, so people got angry.
However you can find the games in less than a second, is still alot played.
