3D Realms has announced a new retro shooter called WRATH: Aeon of Ruin. The game was developed with the Q1 engine and is also co-developed by KillPixel (a Q1 modder who created "Resurrection"). Here's some info from the WRATH's Steam page:
Fueled by legendary Quake 1 technology, the veins of WRATH pump with the DNA of revered '90s shooters. WRATH embraces the timeless elements of classic titles such as DOOM, QUAKE, DUKE NUKEM 3D, BLOOD, UNREAL and HEXEN and carries them into the 21st century.
Equipped with an arsenal of 9 weapons of exceptional might and an inventory of 10 powerful artifacts, you must traverse ancient crypts, sunken ruins, corrupted temples and howling forests to bring death to your enemies. But do not underestimate your adversaries, for they are great in power and number. Your mind must be as sharp as your blade if you hope to survive the dangers ahead.
The world of WRATH is rich with engaging combat, diverse environments and captivating lore. Every element is deftly intertwined to create an authentic and enchanting experience as timeless as the games that inspired it.
-Explore a vast world shrouded in darkness, passionately crafted by the hands of expert Quake scene necromancers.
-Traverse 3 hubs and 15 enormous, interconnected levels crawling with hordes of enemies, lore and ancient secrets.
-Forge your path with an arsenal of 9 deadly weapons, each with multiple fire modes.
-Know your enemy. Many horrors lurk in the shadows, thirsting for your blood.
-Artifacts of great power lay hidden in the dark places of the world. Find them and dominate your enemies.
-Powered by the Legendary Quake 1 Tech, WRATH is an authentic, classic FPS in every way.
-Capped at 666 fps, WRATH will melt your soul and your Voodoo 2... But it's okay. Software Rendering is supported!
-Create your own worlds. WRATH is built from the ground up to be easily moddable. Make your own levels, weapons and characters. From day one, the very tools used to create WRATH will be available for all.
-Gib your friends in classic Multiplayer modes, powered by the renowned QuakeWorld netcode.
Dominate the world of WRATH with 3 other companions in 4 player co-op, LAN or online!
-Immerse yourself in a haunting soundscape born from the twisted minds of Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Rise of the Triad, Dusk and Amid Evil) and Bjorn Jacobson (CyberPunk 2077, Hitman, EVE Online).
i dont know what their were thinking in releasing this vid. looks indeed boring. no action. i hope its a test map or hell breaks loose later in backtracking.
i bought the sigil normal physical release!
ion maiden will be good.
Nice, thanks! I don't see anywhere about whether this will have strafe jumping but this interview does have this snippet that makes me hopeful:
THIS IS A GAME BUILT IN AN OLD-SCHOOL SPIRIT. ARE YOU CATERING ONLY TO THAT AUDIENCE OR ARE YOU HOPING TO GRAB A NEW AUDIENCE AS WELL?
FS: Hopefully, this game will grab a new audience. Simply based on the fact we like to think it’s a really good game first and foremost. That’s the number one priority for a game like this. We didn’t make it to be “old school” per se; we based it around gameplay formula that is mostly known from older shooters, and is kind of a lost art these days.
It’s mainly a lost art these days because the mainstream shooters become more and more “dumbed down,” unfortunately. If you look at the latest Call of Duty games and games like Fortnite and so on. Very simple and very dumbed down and requires a very simple set of skills. We really miss those shooters that require a little bit more from the player.
Perhaps I am reading too much into that but sounds like it might keep some of the advanced movement from old school shooters.
Doom 2016, Metroid Prime, Half-Life 1&2, Bioshock its where its at for me, if I wanna play good oldschool fps I check out cacodemon awards or quaddictted, 10 times better than the current wannabe retrofps bullshit thats around
gotta admit I didnt play any of them, I didnt like Turok in N64 days, shadow warrior was good, but not great I wouldnt like to play another shadow warrior tbh., and strife is a new game for me (thought you mean strafe at first, which also isnt great ...), it looks interesting, better than this game or dusk, but still not that great ... maybe Ion Maiden can be a nice game, but not real highlight, but we will see ...
yeah, strafe was the hyped "oldschool" game and was NOT good .
strife is a forgotten game. i was quite surprised with all the elements. story, light rpg elements, heavy scripting, changing enviroment due to the story, team bots (lol). and it has a doom vibe but is a different game. the doom classic community talked alot of this game, thats the reason community people did the remaster.
Saw you mention the Cacoawards. You should know that Insane Gazebo is back and working on Sunder. He posted screenshots of map 15 on Doomworld a while ago, everything's looking sharp!
thanks for the tip, map 14 looks nice on youtube ... I played the star date episodes, I managed to get through 3, I think its a bit similar in difficulty, but in the end its a bit too tryhard for me ...
I am more into normal things like Brutal Doom Hell on Earth episodes or the putrifier level that also won a caco award... but its nice to watch people play through these tryhard levels on youtube :-)
The Quake 1 engine is released under GPL, so it is free to use so long as you release the source code of your modified version, which I guess they must have done with this game.
