The invites are NA biased. It's been like that forever. I don't know why some people still get surprised every year.

NA get WAY more invites than their player depth deserves, ~2 NA players are good, and then literally all the other americans shouldn't be there.

Nowhere was the invite bias more apparent than the 2017 duel tournament where there were 16 invited NA players, and the bottom 12 players were NA.

Heck, if I remember correctly, NA even lost one place before the tournament even started, because some Australian dude qualified in the NA qualifier with ping 300 against NA players with ping 30.

You're absolutely right, there's a lot of upcoming as well as veteran players who would beat the NA guys (in fact the last minute European fillers, Spart1e and GaRpY, are at the moment above 6 NA players), but probably wouldn't score top 10.

If you can just call some old rusty pros who haven't played in ages, fly them in, and they still score higher than what Americas have to offer... And there are guys who are/were sponsored and dropped because they can't compete. Myztro used to have a bigger roster, my other fellow countryman Pikawa apparently was rated 17th in the world last season and is on a team, stuff like that.

No, the pairings are 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th and so on until 14 - just a bunch of showmatches at every second step, presumably fighting for the prize difference between the two places.

This way, all the rock-paper-scissors situations and seeding stuff is removed. Remember people losing games to push someone to the other side of the bracket than their friends, remember all the times we cried about seeding resulting in second best player being eliminated in 1/8 by the future winner etc.? This time none of this can happen. You want to be the best, you need to beat everyone in a round-robin league. And then play one more match for a bonus :)

This also means this tournament will have ALL games streamed in both phases. Now everyone is streaming their POVs. Sunday there will be one match at the time with all the production and commentary. Nothing goes unstreamed.

o.k., gotta say it is a very good idea to organize the tournament this way, I think even chess speedplay tournaments could massively profit from this idea! Very fair for the players and much harder to cheat the system for the organizer with biased pairings, etc. ... now a transparent and fair qualification process is still missing

Originally they invited Cypher and clawz. Cypher had visa issues (who would've expected), so they invited serious as a replacement (six wekks before the tournament). Of course his visa got denied this close to the trip, so they turned to AGENT (whom they originally didn't want to invite, due to talking shit about QC). AGENT obviously told them that he can't get a visa in time. Meanwhile clawz told them he doesn't want to sign the QPL contract (obligation to stream a certain amount of hours of QC every week), so they had to get two people from EU who either have a valid visa ready or can get one in time, no matter what, and as fast as possible (hence the announcement of the roster this late). Those two people are Spart1e and Garpy.

Oktober 2017 - December 2017 was pretty decent iirc.
The patch before they fucked up the movement once (Jan 2018) and then shortly after fucked the netcode completely (March 2018...).

The patches 'before then' were also in a sense playable but FPS were completely bullshit which hampered playing a lot... and the LG shake bug was ridiculous.
When they messed up movement the game simply wasn't nearly as fun... and when they then reset the movement but fucked the netcode it has become a horror to play.

Netcode... no, it was never right. In fact, that was also best served with the Jan 2019 update, but current problems are probably same netcode but worse servers. Unless you speak about that short time when they tested client-side hit detection with server validation, that was the way to go but knowing you, I suspect you were on the side of protesters based on principle of "client-side causes cheats".

Movement? Those were the patches when they removed speed limits, yes? So you were FOR speed limits?

To clarify a bit.
I never said that the netcode was good. I just said that it's been insanely crap since march 2018 which is when they radically changed it towards client-side hit detection (which they even messed up). Up till then at least some aspects were decent (though I disagreed with the choices they were at least working at an acceptable level)

The movement patch I'm referring to is the one where they capped the movement speed based on Overwatch pro's input which basically halved the speed of all characters and made moving around the map a living hell.

As for the performance it has been unacceptably bad since the start, and although it has slightly improved it is still far below par today, but the largest bulk of improvement was in the Oktober 2017 patch.
Most 'performance patches' after that have decreased performance.

edit: to add a bit... I don't necessarily believe that client-side hitdetection would cause more cheating (although theoretically it makes it easier but cheaters will be able to cheat anyway regardless of netcode).
I oppose client-side hitdetection because of the asynchronous nature of netcode and my believe that the game should remain as fair as possible for all pings.
Game theory tells us that everyone will want to gravitate towards the settings at which they have the best results... So we need to make all people favor a low stable connection (because that is what is best for the game to remain fair) while having small impacts for people that do not.
This is reversed in all clientside hitdetections as (what is broadly known in QC already) having a ping of above 50, often even put through a VPN, with badass packetloss == win.

So there were three stages:
1. All champions had speed limits, except Visor - and the limits were low.
2. Limits were raised to the point where they don't matter - this is when it was best, obviously.
3. Then they lowered acceleration for everyone, and that was when I started to complain again.
4. Then for unknown and impossible to understand reasons, Anarki was again given a speed limit, and it's lower than anyone else can go in two hops, including Sorlag.

Worst thing is - this slowdown was implemented to improve people's ability to hit with their weapons. Instead of changing hit models to big fat cylinders [which every good game should have ;)], they chose to slow everything down. It gets worse, now the lower skilled population demands slowing people down even more, but only when they want to kill them (like when they have a flag or powerup, next step will be "slow them down when I'm zoomed" or some shit).

Oh and again, hit detection is just QL unlagged (which you hated, we know), just with ping limit raised from QL's 55 (80 buffer - 25 frame with no timenudge) to something around infinity. It has nothing to do with client-side hit detection. I definitely want client-side hit detection instead.

From your perspective it wouldn't make any difference - it would still have the problems of unlagged that you hate (inability to guide your dodging by hit signals), but would improve resiliency to asymmetric network connection (when to/from server packet travel times differ and are not equal to RTT/2) and congestion (when actual ping for each packet differs from what the server thinks is your ping, so you can hit people who were never under your crosshair because it rewinds them too little or too much).

I know you want Doom/Quake netcode instead (full synchronous operation, client doesn't show any update until server says so), or at best original QW netcode (some extrapolation, but need to lead shots based on ping). But if you can't get that, would you agree full client-side hit detection wouldn't make any difference to full unlimited ping unlagged?

there were lots of stages to their stupidity, including those of movement... The 'three stages' of which you name 4 are some of them but in between they were doing random shit as well :D

Also everyone with half a brain knows that anarki is hard to hit because of his animations (which are also in the hitbox) which are highly erratic and lean too much while adjusting too slow. It has nothing to do with the main speed of the character at all. Take slash for instance who is also very fast but has to glide (aka it becomes a much smaller box shape that is stuck to the floor) which is much easier to hit than an anarki who leans/spreads his legs waves his arms leading to 4 differently moving small hitboxes.

As for netcode nobody really understands what I want because everyone always talks about extremes while forgetting that you can solve things highly gradual as well. Especially if you take into account how you write weapon behavior and movement abilities.

As for the difference between full unlimited unlagged and client-side hitdetection... They would be minimal at best where the bulk of difference is theoretical with extremely limited noticeable differences. Due to the technical reasons and flexibility of the server I'd still advice programmers to go with unlimited unlagged OR remove the server completely (thus do peer-to-peer) client-side hitdetection.
In general going for the 'regularly known' unlagged or client-side hitdetection in any fast paced game is bullshit though.
You can make it work through other choices in game design and perhaps skewing positions a bit depending on pings but in general people that think that unlagged = good are people that only think about aiming (for instance people that go: "Ahh you're a pro-gamer you must have awesome reflexes/eye-hand coordination") while disregarding everything else.

The server should not have to use RTT/2 to determine how far to rewind a player.

Each command sent by the client includes the render time at which the command was created. This time indicates which two snapshots were used to render the scene at the time of the command, and how far between them to interpolate.

The server can use the command time to grab those snapshots and perform the same interpolation that the client did, to find out what the client's scene looked like at the time of firing.

If done right, this should be almost as good as client side, without the problem of client connection issues distorting enemy positions (e.g. freezing them momentarily or extrapolating them) and treating those positions as authoritative. Normal server-side unlagged also makes it possible to accurately limit the amount of rewind to reasonable levels.

That would require really good synchronization of clocks though. At least an NTP client built into the game, with all participants synchronized to the same reference clock. And then you have to decide what to do if either client or server lose connection to the master clock (or just have NTP filtered out). And let's not forget we're talking QC developers, they'd find a way to somehow screw this up :D (science of synchronizing clocks really precisely is rather advanced, too).

Besides, the problem with that from player's perspective is that when you have a ping spike, not only are your shots received by the server later, but also, by the time server agrees you're shooting, it will probably consider you shooting from a different place (in fights, other people push you around) and then it's still a miss even if it hit on your screen. True client-side hit detection would instantly fix that.

...and also give a huge advantage to actual HPBs. Oh well, I'd still like to see how that would turn out in practice.

There is no need to synchronize clocks. Each snapshot has a time associated with it, written into the snapshot by the server (e.g. these will be 25ms apart with 40 snap per second), and the render time on the client is a point on the same timeline.

If that render time is exactly equal to a snapshot time, then the client just renders that snapshot. If the render time is somewhere between two received snapshots, the scene will be produced from an interpolation between those two snapshots. If the render time is past the last received snapshot, the client must extrapolate a state to render (something to be avoided with the unlagged method by buffering snapshots and adding some lag as side effect).

When you shoot, the client knows the render time of that shot, so it can send it to the server (which possess the same snapshots since it sent them). The server now has the render time of the shot and all the snapshots used by the client, so it can recreate the scene the same way the client did and perform the hit test.

The player position on the client is a predicted state, to make movement respond instantly to key presses, and it is usually correct. The downside to that, of course, is that the prediction may be wrong, and when the same input is processed on the server, the player's position is something different, e.g. you might have got bounced by some splash your client didn't know about. But that's an edge case, and I'm not sure it should be compensated for because then people will be able to shoot your from their predicted position, which is a position they never occupied on your screen.

Unlagged doesn't give advantage to the HPB, other than that they may be more used to the side effects of the lag than you. They can shoot you behind walls, and you can shoot them behind walls. When it comes down to a race condition, where the winner is determined by whose signal gets to the server first, the LPB still wins. What gives advantage is warp conditions where the warper can still aim just fine.

You're right, that should in fact be enough, no clock sync needed. However, that would either require packets from server to arrive in nice equally spaced intervals (but we're discussing fluctuating ping too, so that's not happening). When you send "I do this 2 ms after receiving frame 1729", it can both mean you're doing it right after, or half way until the next frame suddenly arrives. That's probably why unlagged used a rolling average of past ping times (that, and I think not all client packets had to include ack for last server packet it received?). Of course, with high enough server tick rate (like QW's 77 as opposed to Q3's 25), those differences will become so small this shouldn't really matter... buuuut... probably not in QC ;)

I just remembered QC really likes predicting everything client-side and when you're lagging, that really doesn't match what is happening on the server. You can barely move when network goes funky (which is good of course, I prefer that over people warping like in QL!) So I guess even with high tick rate and unlagging to timestamp, instead of by ping/2, QC would find a way to be unbearable :)

In a rail (or SG) fight, you get hit and you instinctively know to make a dodge just before 1500 ms pass. But if the other guy has ping 200, he can make another shot before you make your perfect dodge.

In shaft fencing, you dodge less (or not at all) when you get good lock but enemy doesn't (think surprising someone taking a jump pad, you do a bit of 100% before they notice, so why break that). But when enemy gets the lock, you need to shake it off in some way. Against an HPB, again, there's 200 ms of being hit before you even get the signal. Then you make a correction, but it's not immediately obvious if it worked or not.

Other than that I agree HPBs still have a bunch of disadvantages, which definitely outweigh the advantages with my play style ;) But we've seen people learn to use the advantages masterfully, like prox1mo, or dandaking.

That's why (if you're sticking with the unlagged philosophy) they need to be adaptively buffered as much as can be tolerated. Of course, it is impossible to guarantee you will always have two snapshots to interpolate between, in which case, you must extrapolate until the next one arrives. That can't be fixed. If in the client side hit detection system, you allow the player to hit these extrapolated player positions, then you are allowing them to hit you at a location you may never have been at. The hit should only occur where the extrapolated position was correct enough.

When the next frame suddenly arrives, it will be added to the buffer, and the client will continue rendering as normal, just lagging behind. If the amount by which it is lagging behind gets too large, then the client needs to skip ahead its rendering time, e.g. by adding a millisecond more per frame until the buffer delay is more appropriate.

I gave the delay between one player acting and the other seeing the action.
Correct me if I make any mistakes; this is tricky. But I'll go through the scenario.

At t = 0, player 2 (HPB) shoots his railgun.
At t = player 1 ping / 2 + player 2 ping / 2, player 1 (LPB) sees the rail.
At t = 1500, player 2 will fire his second rail, so player 1 needs to move out of the way on player 2's screen by then.

Player 1 moving out of the way on player 2's screen before t = 1500
means
player 1 moving out of the way on player 1's screen before t = 1500 - (player 1 ping / 2 + player 2 ping / 2).

So the time from player 1 seeing the rail to the time of having to be out of the way is

1500 - (player 1 ping / 2 + player 2 ping / 2) - (player 1 ping / 2 + player 2 ping / 2)

or just

1500 - (player 1 ping + player 2 ping).

As you can see, this will be the same value even if the players are reversed, so player 1 can do to player 2 what player 2 can do to player 1.

If the sum of two pings is always the same for you, you get used to that. What the HPB tends to be used to is HPB ping + LPB ping. What the LPB tends to be used to is LPB ping + LPB ping. Still if the HPB encountered another HPB, he'd have to adjust too, just as the LPB does when he encounters an HPB.

Why are people complaining about the coverage? There's 20 different streams you can watch and every match is being streamed and probably saved. Much improvement from prior QC tournaments since there's no demo support.

Imo this is great, you can follow your favorite players stream, they also get more viewers and sponsors, win win.

Think of the whole picture. The whole concept of esports is to advertise something, in this case a game, but because of this measure this effort will be completely ineffective. There's no stream that is going to get enough views to reach mainstream visibility, therefore 3 out of the 4 days of the tournament will become a major wasted advertisement opportunity for Quake.

For example only the top 18 most popular streams on Twitch get to be on its /all frontpage, but the most viewed stream of this tournament (rapha's) has mere 1.4k viewers. Right now on Twitch there's literally over 100 streams with more visibility than the Quake Champions' Pro League, and with that not a single non-current fan is going to watch the event/advertisement. Major tournaments and Pro Leagues are not a charity to support the players, but the organizers pay a monthly salary to players as a marketing effort.

And also think of the future, too. This tournament was one of the very last chances of promoting Quake. Okay this measure ensures a player that used to get 30 viewers is going to get 200 in a weekend, but the negative side is losing one of the last chances for Quake to even subsist in the future. Sounds dramatic doesn't it, but QC is a Zenimax game and big corporations don't like bleeding money, which is what QC has obviously been doing as of late. Having a fake GTV is a nice thing indeed but the price to pay is too steep, which is the future of the hobby itself.

Exact, the fact that you can see who you like is a good thing, but you need an "official" stream with the commentators, will definitely have more views than a rapha or a cooller.

Im not saying this is perfect, but the freedom to watch each player for true quake fans is amazing progress.

So many things wrong.. / missing. Just a small example.. you don't even know if they are practicing or playing for real. crashes.. you don't know champion bans.. you don't know what the round / map score is.. streams are in no way in sync..

Ya, in 2019 we’ve finally caught up with the spectating options we had in early 2002 on GTV.

It's also cool how any streamer can cast whatever games he chooses (or his audience chooses).

This was a great idea in my opinion but execution leaves a lot to be desired. First off, some streams look better than others, some streams (like garpy) don't even have sound so whats the point ?

What should've happened is : way more support/help for the players to get a good stream setup going, with a smooth quality and good visibility. I'm sure this was done but could have been done/prepared better imo. Some streams are just aweful to watch, even if very few to be honest.

Secondly, they still should have made an official overseeing quake twitch channel, with the amount of casters they flew over, they could've easily setup a relaxed/chill area with a couple of sofas where players can go and sit in between games, some basic production like players profiles, a few questions/interviews here and there + obviously the freedom for casters to move from one game to another... IDK it would've been like 10 times better and I think everyone would've been actually stunned by something like that. But obviously they had to go some half-assed lazy way instead.

Hopefuly they learn from this and can repeat that feat with those additional things and the shit would actually be perfect.

The final ranking of the players is almost entirely decided by the round robin.

N°1 and N°2 of round robin go directly to grand final.
N°3 and N°4 of round robin will play a match to decide who is 3rd and who is 4th.
N°5 and N°6, same thing
Up to N°13 and N°14.
Those who didn't place top 14 won't play on sunday. But those who play on sunday will play just 1 match. And only 2 will have a shot at being champion.

We're all disappointed that the actual competition (the league) isn't produced for mass consumption (I want to link one stream to some friends), but the commentated showmatches that will follow are practically guaranteed to be good, so that will do.

Also, with this format, you can expect dKsL or someone to produce a proper frag movie - everyone is supposed to leave VODs up. All POVs, all games. Think about it!

I watch my homie Av3k's stream obviously. He has some technical issues - someone was helping him disable G-Sync and stuff, and that's after his losses to rapha and Cooller, and he's still unhappy with the performance and input lag - maybe he just can't get used to those monitors, or something.

Having said that, he just isn't prepared mentally for this level of competition. When stuff goes wrong, removes headphones and enables chill mode which you've seen there, he was changing stuff in the menu and just jumping around allowing k1llsen to get all the shooting practice he wanted.

This is not the Av3k from 10 years ago, sadly :(

He'll face some fierce opponents today and I hope he sleeps well, otherwise with this attitude we'll guaranteed to see three 0-2s in a row. I can bet on nice series of wins tomorrow (maybe except Xron) to get some points back though ;)

If anyone reads this then... If you're having issues with input latency you could try this:

1. Go into NVIDIA's Control Panel and force disable V-SYNC
2. Enable G-SYNC (Fullscreen and Windowed)

3. Go to the windows power options and disable fast start-up: https://imgur.com/7Lz6b7V

4. Restart the PC

You can then leave G-SYNC enabled.

Providing V-SYNC is force disabled, the input lag will essentially be the same as with G-SYNC disabled. The screen will always push the frame top to bottom at ~4.16ms (even if your screen is running a lower refresh rate than 240Hz because less frames).

If you go above 240, G-SYNC auto-disables and there's no V-SYNC automatically enabled that increases input lag (because we force disabled it). It also means there's a slight chance of a tear because if there's a more recent frame available whilst G-SYNC is enabled, the monitor will not wait to display it (because we force disabled V-SYNC), but as a result, it means you'll have near identical input lag and retain the smoothness of G-SYNC 99% of the time.

Without force disabling V-SYNC, you MUST lock your in-game fps below ~236 to avoid an additional input lag penalty if your frame rate goes above 240 (where traditional V-SYNC then activates).

V-SYNC does work differently within the G-SYNC range, and input lag does remain low too, but not as low as when you disable V-SYNC.

It's really the best way to play QC, especially if fps is all over the place. But the main benefit is for games that refuse to go into exclusive fullscreen mode. In this case you bypass most of the shitty input lag from Windows 10's DWM V-SYNC on the desktop due to the reasons mentioned above. This one you can never disable, and it's why I'd consider enabling it in this case especially.

You can also try

5. Right click QuakeChampions.exe and disable "Fullscreen Optimizations" under the properties. This should force the game to run in exclusive fullscreen.

Dell/Alienware PCs. Monitor: Dell AW2518H (240Hz), GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070
Windows 10 = default. Not configured for competitive play. Even cancer overlays such as Nvidia Experience, Xbox Game Bar DVR are ON.
Nvidia drivers = default. GSYNC + max pre-rendered frames are ON. I'd rather play 60hz + m_filter.
PCs captured with consumer-grade Elgato HD60S. Like the feeling of 240hz? Tough shit.
Streams are managed by the organiser (player control is limited to whether the camera/microphone are enabled).
