my guess is that too many people with idtech experience left, which turned id into an IP bank from a creative development team. willits, syncerror, and sponge are one of the few left there with any knowledge of the quake community. however, their knowledge is limited to the segment of the community that wants padded corners and probably has electrical outlet covers to protect their cats, and so they've designed a game for the vocal minority, and, in the process, driven much of the community away.

luckily, willits has "resigned", leaving stinkhair and splooge and who knows who else to man the bilge pump keeping the rate of quake's sinking down to just tolerable enough levels to allow them to blame the problems on other elements than themselves just long enough to keep getting a paycheck.

zenimax should say "fuck the sunk costs", fire these morons, and bring in somebody to clean up this awful, awful game.

My personal take: Sync still loves actual Quake, sponge has good intentions but wants to "modernize" Quake, both did some great things that you loved and had no idea it was one of them, and both did things we can agree were shit.

syncerror loves quake, but he has a bad personality for decision-making. his is a mind that does things to be "nice", and wants to support the desires of "nice" people. he is the kind of person that doesn't realize that catering to these "nice" people is what results in unremarkable and uninteresting products that are reflections of the personalities of the "nice" people.

quake champions should have been quake 5. quake 5 should have been gory and set in the same universe and setting as quake. quake 5 should have offered similar modification and content creation freedom as previous quake games. these are core aspects of the creative/productive audience of quake games. quake 5 multiplayer should have rebelled against modern multiplayer conventions and offered dedicated servers, configurations, etc., with an emphasis on quality netcode for competitive integrity. they had legitimate popular game modes that could have made the game populated at launch (ctf, clan arena, duel, tdm), and instead created some hideous frankenstein's monster amalgamation of design-by-committee Good Ideas(TM) that playtested extremely well in the mental playground of the designers, but nobody actually liked when implemented.

quake 5 could have been a really great game that actually blossomed from a vain nostalgia and capitalized on the recent trend in reinvigorating corridor/arena shooters, rather than an awful copycat designed-by-committee mishmash of boring and bad ideas.

i think they fired way too many programmers and let way too many designers let loose with their wild ideas. if done right quake 5 can become a new platform for making games like unreal engine games, but they chose to go with art based approach where game is a one off art peace like rage, it looks nice, but no one makes mods for it, so it's dead as soon as devs stop making updates for it. id's best side was it's engines, and they really should have emphasized that approach instead of delving into artistic approach as it is a dead end.

quake is shit at fundamental level, no one will even care enough to play it. quake champions and quake live did have a lot of players at launch until everyone realized the game is shit and moved on. valve, i repeat did not invent either dota or cs, both of these "games" were popular before valve bought them, they never changed any fundamental things in these games, they simply provided these devs with more resources. if there is original quake developer out there, they probably wouldn't even care to make this game unless given huge amount of resources to produce a game that is "slightly" more successful than quake champions. there isn't 1,000,000 quake players out there. 2500 concurrent players at best.
