Nice calculation, just in your model the mouse doesn't have to start nor stop, you are taking the average velocity of a stationary process, while in reality the mouse starts at 0 [m/s], during the process reaches a higher peak value than the average 1.75 [m/s] that you calculated and ends at 0 [m/s].

A similar restriction applies to the measurement setups that generated those malfunction speed datasets:

As you can see, the disc spins up with a rather low and constant acceleration (horizontal growth of the curves) in order to generate a quasi-stationary process.
Which means, that results like these

tell you:
- the dependency on mouse surface
- the consistency of the sensor at a certain velocity/mousepad (vertical spread)
- the theoretical maximum achievable velocity under quasi-stationary conditions

What they don't tell you is, if you are actually able to reach those theoretical velocities under instationary conditions.
You will never see those theoretical 1.5 [m/s], when in reality the mouse spins out at a lower velocity, because you applied an acceleration the sensor can't keep up with.

I went with the simpler model because that's all I needed to do to show that the mouse can malfunction, but thanks for explaining why it can malfunction also at higher sensitivities, matching people's actual experience with the mouse.

The tool uses the mouse data itself to extrapolate the velocity of the sensor based on dpi, there is no external sensor that measures the actual velocity/acceleration and therefore the results are flawed right from the start, as soon as you enter an assumed dpi value that actually isn't true due to manufacturing tolerances, potentially wrong mouse reports aside.
Try it yourself, just enter a deliberatly wrong mouse dpi into the software by using half or double of Wmo's 400 dpi and spectate your perfect control speed magically change.

When you want to check if the speedometer in your car shows you the correct velocity values, you need an external second measurement to compare it against.
This can be someone standing next to the street with a radar, a measurement of distance+time, GPS-data; you can even use the tachometer values and calculate motor-rpm>gearbox-ratio>differential-ratio>tire-diameter>car-velocity.
No matter how you do it, you need an external second measurement as comparison.
What you can't do, is to check if the speedometer is correct, by only looking at the speedometer itself, without comparing it to anything else.

There is nothing great about the WMO besides the shape and that's arguable because that's entirely subjective.

Even back then the WMO was average, it was only popular because it was cheap. Nowadays it's just garbage.

It had a great transparent feel to the tracking. Was the hi fi of tracking. Logitech's now feel like they have a lookahead feature, where initial movement feels slow but somehow it picks up. Like there some algorithm that interfere with the tracking. Wmo was a raw mirror of mouse movement.

IN QC you reach negative mouse accel by loading into the game.

Playing without accel, I would hit WMO malfunction fairly regularly at 35cm/360. Not very often at 30cm/360, but still sometimes. Faster sens than that or playing with accel and almost certainly won't hit malfunction.

Unless you're going to mod the WMO, the other downsides that often aren't mentioned are the terrible cable and scrollwheel.

CIRCA 2019 there are boatloads of mice that are better, it's just a question of picking something with the right shape/weight combination. Basically anything from current Logitech or Zowie lineup is better overall, but if you want the best and most direct replacement, then Logitech G Pro Wireless is unquestionably the best mouse ever produced.

just picked up a Cooller... Cooler Master MM710 mouse, this basically a $50 mouse with no rgb, weighs only 53grams and has a 3389 sensor. the next model up will be the MM711 with RGB on it and weighs 5grams more.

Finally i switched from wmo to 3360 (ninox venator) after like 15 years. Its good, i like it very much but i expected much more. I dont feel that much of a difference in terms of performance. Both are awesome. What was strange i found the 3360 better at low movement tracking like lg-ing and worse in the very fast flicks. Newer sensors should perform better during very fast movements. Weird. Maybe its just me or i need more time to get used to the the 3360.

It takes a long time to fully get used to a new mouse. As you correctly observed the devil is in the details, sensor translation is slightly different, dpi setting, shape, weight, centre of gravity, lift-off distance, mouse feet, everything adds and makes the overall feel different.

The sides of the WMO are almost vertical. I think they labled the IMO1.1a wrong as WMO, because that mouse has sloped sides (but with side buttons, they aren't shown).

This is wmo, just compared with mine. Sides are almost vertical in the middle. From the back it looks like this, but there is not a single cross section that would have such shape.

These 3 projections don't mean they have the same shape, read the fine print in the bottom. Haven't had viper but it doesn't look like a wmo clone exactly. Only dimensions match.

So comparing outlines is not the way to go for finding a similar mouse, anecdotal is more useful.

Cooller and some other russians use Zowie ZA13, or used it, after WMO. Others like Rapha, Cypher used Razer Abyssus for some time, but I wouldn't recommend it nowadays, the sensor is not at all the same compared to WMO's mlt04.

ZA12 is my main maouse I use right now. I installed pure ptfe skates and a paracord cable.

G Pro same with skates and paracord, but I don't like it so much.

Revel is nice, I dont even remember why I switched away, solid mouse.

Of course, I also own WMO and IMO1.1a, but 440 dpi is a real pain these days and manual port overclocking is slightly annoying. I get them out of the drawer from time to time just to be reminded how friggin ahead of the time they were.

On the plus side the addiction is fading, I sold 2 old mx300 and my mx518 refresh, will probably continue some more mice I never use anymore....

I wanted to try an ergonomic shape recently (got glorious model d), but I think it doesn't work for me at all in quake. I can just track better at the same sensitivity with wmo. Lowered my sens to match it, but it doesn't come without drawbacks. I think I'll be in a market for wmo replacement soon too.

G PRO I think it is a little bit heavier or weight is placed a little bit different, like heavier where the G logitech logo is placed. Also not sure if I like the G PRO material when hands are getting sweaty... I think the cheap plastic of WMO is better :D

Update: I'll probably stick with this viper, smaller mouse works better for me. However it doesn't feel like wmo shape at all, it's lower, back is narrower and front wider. I got used to it in few days though. My hand was going numb at first.

Moreover it's the same or inferior to glorious model d in almost every measurable way - feels heavier, harder to move. Cable is stiffer where model d feels wireless - I don't even need a bungee for model d. Feet have a lot of friction in comparison, especially static friction is much worse. Plastic gets sticky when you sweat a little which really bothered me in wmo, less so now that I removed all my scrollwheel binds. Probably should have gotten model o in the first place, but I think it's good enough for now.

In the end it's not a big improvement over wmo. The main thing was that I couldn't overclock it anymore and 125hz mouse was jittery on 240hz display.

That really looks pretty similar. Even the weight is similar, WMO is about 87 grams.

The difference from WMO to G Pro wired is in the shape and weight distribution. G Pro has no butt and is really top heavy (vertically), where usually mice are bottom heavy. This makes a big dífference for me and the reason I don't use the G Pro anymore, despite the good sensor and buttons.

This is true. Weight distribution is different, even if the overall weight is almost the same. Superlight version might be better because of this, it is super light, so maybe weight distribution will be not an issue.

Literally this. Not only have big companies not copied or based it on the shape (with exception of the recent Roccat Burst), I haven't even been able to find an Asian clone... Every other ambi mice these days are low-profile and more suited for fingertip/claw than palm/palm-claw.

However, I have to say I do actually prefer having side buttons. But LED, who cares, and I still have nightmares from Steelseries R310 rubber. Also, just to rant a bit more, what's with the coatings on some mice these days? The GPW secretly traps all your hand oils. What happened to that good old WMO plastic?

For me wmo is very inconsistent. From dry and and slicky with very little friction to completely sticky. I got ocd of washing it with soap every day because I couldn't stand the sticky feeling - that was awful. Don't have it with other mice.

You are right about low profile but I think there are some mice with higher profile like wmo too. g-pro comes to mind, just compare heights.

Actually you're right, I was blinded by nostalgia for a second; the coating on the WMO can be inconsistent with sweaty hands, I do find a slight lack of grip at times. Personally, I prefer those coatings that don't trap your hand oils; as much as I hate cleaning Zowie mice, it's nice that it looks new again after doing so (the scroll wheel is always tricky however).

And yeah, the GPW is probably the only higher profile, centred ambi mouse I can think of, but I can't palm it because of the hump; it just pushes my palm away/lower, and I don't get enough support. If you compare the curve profile, you can see how the GPW bumps out more vs. the gradual curve of the WMO.

Hope the Vaxee IO shape comes out soon, but idk what to expect, Zowie mice have always been so narrow but long.

The old Zowie team moved on to create this company. I really like their thorough aproach to every detail. But they fucked up on the weight a little, 75 grams is not appropriate nowadays, because lightweight is where its at, it needs to be 70 or lower.
