Human intelligence is not the only type of possible intelligence. Plus, neural networks don't work like rigid IF/THEN programs.

In the not too distant future (maybe 10-20 years from now), computers will be powerful enough to simulate the human brain. And that's not even the most effective way to produce intelligent results since a lot of human brain functions serve to operate/regulate the human anatomy.

Why not read more on the subject before developing a strong opinion? Try reading Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence. If you actually read that book, consider it carefully, and still maintain your current opinion, then I'd like to hear a more coherent critique than "AI doesn't exist... No, zillion if statemets are not inteligence."

Im not denying that theres great progress in machine learning and neural networks, but those things serve a different purpose and work in a way that is great for certain things. And deep down they come down to if statements, because thats how computers work. Thats in no way even close to how common sense works. You dont scan trough possible answers while making decisions, you dont compartmentalize all your knowledge like computers do, you are able to learn on your own and rate your own progress, unlike a computer.

And no, i wont read a book written to cash in on the A.I., neural network buzzword hype

When you talk about "common sense", that's a higher level function that's the result of a vast number of neurons working in concert. But each individual neuron is doing a comparatively simple action (sending a signal or not). The same can be said of neural networks where each node is doing something simple but combined with the entire network, there's a very complex process happening.

There's nothing special about biological substrate where only it is capable of intelligence. I suspect part of your view is based on some supernatural explanation of intelligence. Is that true? If not, then what is special about a neuron compared to an individual node in neural network?

This is all besides the point because, as I mentioned before, artificial intelligence does not need to be precisely like human intelligence. It does not need to work the same way to accomplish intelligent actions. The more sophisticated these systems get, the more indistinguishable they get from human-level intelligence.

He is right in a way that they work on an artificial brain but still this has nothing to do with real intelligence. The danger lies a lot more in that artificial intelligence stays infinitely dumb. And people are starting to rely on it in the sense of making decisions and so on, falsely thinking that the computer is intelligent.

Like google for example, a better AI, than what they already will even increase their power.
They have all the searches of people, they have most popular browsers and see the sites people go to (only a small amount of people disable sharing that information with google), their AI goes through all the gmail, which is also most popular webmail ... tbh. the information google has can be used to a big advantage for geostrategy or discounting people they dont like ... china is already becoming super surveillance with internet tracked, banned sites, cams everywhere, and the western world will follow this model, just need to say the sentence "needed for fighting against terrorism" and you have your permission ...

I read a ton of stuff on the subject and I think we are pretty much fucked, just not realized yet. There will be no altruism in the story when the two species will collide. At first will we test them, enslave them, torture them, and kill them in the name of science and whatnot….like how we did and how we do with everyone and everything….. then one day they will figure out what we really did and how weak, stupid and vulnerable we are, and then they will do the “right” thing for their survival.

I tend to agree. Something can be intelligent without caring about outcomes. It's just a problem solving machine.

But you just know that someone will (just because they can) program in a survival instinct into one of these robots, and "how to survive best" will be the problem they are then solving.

true the design of AI will be to serve, but not to all humans, it will serve the guy/institution that wants to have it built ... so I dont see it trying to build up its own empire ... but it will be interesting to see if society manages to keep all humans alive by establishing a basic universal income or if there will be only a very small subset of humans living on this planet in the long run (not necessarily by war, maybe by brainwashing into complacency just like now in the west or by chemical infertilizers)

ESR will not be the place where we will come to a conclusion about this subject but for the sake of the conversation.... :

I do not agree with you (or with Mr. Urban) on many levels.

- First of all, he only assumes intelligence quotient and completely ignores emotional quotient, as if it is something only the human brain can have, which has no scientific basis at all.

- Secondly, when artificial beings will be smart enough to augment and enhance humans, they will be also smart enough to do it with themselves as well (including but not limited to their software!).
We do not know yet where this path will go, but evolutional science suggest that it is highly unlikely that it will go in a way where it was heading before. In my opinion, some of the species will be in a different kingdom and some even in a different domain.

- Things will not go down on history how the best of humanity would want to, but how the worst of it will convince and exploit the majority. We do not know yet if that is something we can survive or not, but we do know it will be far from optimal (which is highly dangerous probably, just like how it is highly dangerous what we do with our environment now).

I think it is hard to say what a superintelligence will do when it becomes the dominant intelligence on our planet. My belief is that it won't think like humans and it certainly won't have the same emotions. But precisely for that reason we cannot rule out the possibility that it will destroy us -- either directly or indirectly -- for any given reason.

Perhaps it starts utilizing all the matter on Earth and we're simply caught in the way as it creates a giant computer system out of all matter on Earth (including human which can be boiled and broken down to essential chemicals that could be used for a variety of purposes: structural, energy, etc.).

Or perhaps it is benevolent but still ends up destroying us through some malignant failure. Maybe it wants to make all humans happy and, after a lot of trial and error, determines the only possible way to accomplish this is to capture all of us and insert instruments into our brains and manipulate the parts of our brain responsible for making us "happy."

That's exactly the issue: there is no way to stop a self-improving broad artificial intelligence once it has passed human intelligence level.

Those conditions when it transcends our intelligence, at the singularity event, must be correct, else there will be negative to grave consequences.

Another issue will be bad players that whish to abuse a kind of genie AI to become supreme ruler of the earth, like the bad guys in cartoons. That's why it is easy to forsee, there will be a race to singularity where some whish to birth it for their own profit vs. others that do it for the sake of humanity and for the best possible starting conditions

I don't think anyone is rushing towards general AI (except maybe scientists/technologists) but increasingly effective weak AI is where the action is happening which will inevitably lead to general AI. There's a lot of reasons why gov'ts around the world are focused on this. primarily for military purposes.

For instance, any sophisticated military would probably love an AI they can control/deploy which can rapidly command units on a dynamic/evolving battlefield. Where units should move to, where to target air strikes, where to send in supplies, etc.. Or fly drones at very high speeds through residential areas and buildings while identifying combatants. If it's a large-scale war, with many different fronts, having a superior AI than your enemy does is probably the deciding factor.

The problem is, like you said, there will be a point at which the AI starts self-improving and surpasses human level intelligence. I think the links you provided are very nice. The primary source of my understanding is from Bostrom's Superintelligence and his metaphor of an "intelligence explosion" is disturbing. We won't really know what is happening until it is too late. The "genie" is let out of its bottle and we can only hope it is good or, at the very least, benign. If it is malevolent, we are, like kapca said, truly fucked.

Yea, I got pretty disturbed after reading Bostrom's Superintelligence. Pretty much on every front, it looks like things have a bigger chance to turn out bad rather than good.

However, it remains to be seen what will happen and still a chance things will turn out well.

cost of human life will be diminished to a point where they will count how much money it costs to support a human worker vs paying for electricity bill of a robot, then once they figure out how to transfer human consiousness into a chip living people will basically become like a bug on a wall. they talk about a brain chip ai interface implant, but it's still basically a monkey strapped to a computer kind of scenario, so unless ai will be severely limited we as species won't be the dominant force on this planet anymore. eta on ai is 5-10 years with a full blown transfer to ai before 2050, at that point vanilla human life on earth will be like a monkey in a zoo.

what's more ethical computer ai or bio ai, like i think bio engineered humans will be even worse because it's like giving birth to defective humans who might suffer all their life for sake of experiement, so i would rather not go even deeper into that hole, as far as bioengineering i think it's useless given how long it takes to create a whole new type of human being with current technology, go do ai thing first and maybe we get all of that sorted out, it just needs very careful consideration as to how it is developed to cause as little harm as possible to humanity. fast jumps in technology do cause a lot of havoc in society and may lead to civil unrest and more wars. if we go ai route first i would consider doing is human soul transfer and then develop ai later, if you don't get yourself into that chip first than you basically become hostage of ai. or another thing. i just really hope it wont end up horrible like it was in the 20th century with experiments on humans and concentration camps, crazy people should never get to go in the government.

Quake champions is the latest quake title. There was a time when I was playing Quake 3. I loved the fast paced gameplay of the original. I played the game all the way up to its last mission and was only around for about an hour before I gave up. I was sick of the game and wanted to go back to the original. This title seems to be very similar to Quake 4 and I think it is better than the last title. The controls feel just as responsive and fluid. The level designs are interesting and unique. You can't see your allies in the first few levels. They can just walk through walls and there is no line of sight. But when you get to levels like "Necropolis" and "Hell" your ally's will be very visible. This is a great addition to the game. The level layouts are not very large but there are a lot

When I first saw AlphaZero playing chess on Twitch I wasn't sure if he was simply having a good day or the pinnacle of skill in a global tournament, or if he was just hot off some online tournament win. For me it was a no brainer. Some of the games I've watched so far have a charm about them where he draws from day 1, he thinks the correct moves the majority of the time and also knows when to maximize the advantage from a situation when he already has an advantage. It seems like he really is a true master of this game. But then when he played the most surprising move of his tournament, like the 2 pawn sacrifice to take away white's King's Pawn, it all began to make sense.
