The term AFPS is wrong. As soon as people shoot each other in a computer game its an arena. Or is there a possibility to go out of that arena and do something else like not being shot?
What they might wanted to express with arena shooter is proper level design shooter. Proper in the way that the gameplay itself and the corresponding possibilities when designing a map are directed to give the player an interesting challenge.
In contrast to realistic looking level design shooter. Where the gameplay is realistic and thus the level designers have to live with only limited possibilities for giving the player an interesting challenge.
How close to reality is it to control a mouse and a keyboard and while watching an interactive movie? As opposed to using your actual legs to move.
Thus my proposal for a new term is at first, do not give proper shooters a different name. Call it FPS. Name the shooters that limit themselves to imitate patterns found in the real world a different name. Call them Realistic FPS. RFPS.
Call of Duty - RFPS
Battlefield - RFPS

Absolutely yes, correct.
.
I always a feel a need to express somethin along these lines, usually with a lot more frustration and vindictiveness (or truth) wenever I see somone say the term "arena fps" lol. it honestly makes me fuckin cringe whenever I see it. And I honestly really suspect that's what the term was originally intended to do when it was came up with, to marginalize these kind of games cuz its honestly easier to make/develop the "RFPS" games, as well as invest in them commercially from that industry's standpoint as publishers, culture in the west/US or lack thereof, possibly even political interests, etc.
so whenever someone says the term "arena shooter" or "arena fps", people just think "corny" or "kinda weird" etc. (especially when looking at it as an outsider lol, the physics in quake gameplay can be humorous sometimes. any fps really, but especially in quake type games cuz of their nature)
thanks for expressin these sentiments I was gonna honestly try to address it in a thread too somewhere along the lines.
Unfortunately, I don't think this will ever catch on even if this may make the most sense. RFPS have been around for decades and no one is gonna jus start automatically throwin around the term RFPS all the sudden to refer to them, while most wont know what it means.
it also hides the fact that these aren't realy "realistic" games, and that theyre more or less dumbed down and lazily created. Which is important. I like the term "dumbed down RFPS" (which truthfully applies to CS as well, all the way back since it left beta basically).
I have some ideas though, and I think its important that this scene no longer refers to their games as "arena" shooters anymore, ever again. Ever. at least on that level I think the rest of the industry may catch on, especially if something else is done about categorizing them proper, even if its jus this scene runnin wid the "RFPS" term.
Cool idea
