In this case it's a little different because the tournament is held at Lucca Comics and games, a big event full of streamers, cosplayers, videogames and general degeneracy.
Lucca is also a beautiful little historical city, so there's a lot to wander around.

But in id's defense, this is only a final of a Swiss-system tournament, where they had lots of chances to advance to the top of the ladder.

Then we, the fans, get these playoffs, where we're basically guaranteed pretty balanced matches the whole time, the two so far I enjoyed more than I expected (br1ck's last seconds on Molten Falls were so legendary! I actually laughed out loud :))

If you remember seeded SE tournaments back in IEM times, now that was horrible - first two rounds were pwnage not worth watching.

This is still SE, yes. There will be 4 uninteresting matches in the second round, yes (relegation match winners are thrown to be eaten by 4-8 spots). That's 4 matches out of 23. This is still waaaay better than Carmac's insistence that "people just want to know the champion", which caused half the games to be washouts.

And this way, we get everything streamed - all games of the online stage, and all games of the LAN. Isn't that what we here on ESR always wanted? :)

There is a reason for that...... the fucking incompetent morons didn't even release a dedicated server so people could actualy organise LANs.....

BO3 double elim would be the preferred format. It certainly can't be that you play qualification for weeks / months online, only to be out of the whole thing in two maps.

But tournament organizers have always been skilled in implementing the worse possible rules. I can remember LANs in the early Q3 days where you'd suddenly see timelimit 15, when tl 10 used to be the norm everywhere else. I can remember them switching to overtime, when sudden death was the norm. I can remember them suddenly seating us in a separate room on different PCs in the finals, when we played all other games the previous two days on our own PCs that we were used to. Anything to make circumstances shitty and random and screw over players who put a lot of time, effort, practice in to perform well.

That's the whole point - you need to play well for the whole season if you want to be placed higher. And if you don't, what stops you from winning an SE bracket? There's a straight path to the top, just 4 games to win, problem?


Then you randomly complain that TL 15 is more random than 10 (it's the opposite) and overtime is more random than sudden death (it's the opposite). And I don't know when was the last tournament with two days of playing on your own PC. For over a decade it's standard for a tournament to have the same setup for all games (including your practice/warmup games, you play everything in the same area/room).

There was a period when organizers switched to shitty LCDs, but those times are fortunately behind us. This tournament is played on XL2546s so that's awesome, some players probably have worse panels at home than what they get to play on here :) (You still bring your mouse, keyboard and mousepad of course.)

LAN is different for entirely different reasons - it's too dark/too bright/especially too loud, and on top of that, people touch you or take pictures with flash when you're playing, stupid shit like that... but again, those idiocies are not a problem in these finals - all games are on stage with no one behind you. So we can say it's a level playing field, with nuisances (lighting, cameras, noises) affecting both players equally. This is LAN.

It would help if you read and understood posts before replying.

Nobody claims TL 15 was more random than TL 10, or overtime more random than sudden death. Nobody was making a judgement on which one was preferable.
If you ask yourself when those things happened, I mentioned that too.

So you find it fair and correct that you can have week long qualifiers with countless games for each player to determine their standings in the playoffs, and then those players can be eliminated from the whole thing within 20 minutes of playtime. After, for many of them, flying in from another continent. Yeah, right!

You said specifically that TL 15 and overtimes were implemented, to quote "to make circumstances shitty and random". Your words! What was I expected to understand then?

If I could, I would change the last 6 matches (top 8 players, starting from current quarterfinals) to DE or even RR, with adding at most one day to the tournament duration, or even play more relegation/qualifiers yesterday in parallel to make more time for this DE bracket at the top.

But they decided otherwise (chose SE to broadcast all games over 2 days) and I can see the thinking behind that. Players playing better in the season still get introduced very late in the tournament (reducing number of bad games), but there still can be a underdog story developing (Cypher serving this role here, only because he couldn't go to QuakeCon, but still!), so it creates a nice narrative and many good games.

We shouldn't be too salty about it :)

PS. Liquipedia says that Stage 2 Finals will be played 2020-02-28 to 2020-03-01, Friday-Sunday.

Unless they forgot February is 29 days in 2020, we're looking at 3 day tournament there, so here's hoping we'll get even more games and even more fair tournament system!

The point was that the organizers deviated from what was the norm at the time, and what players practiced for. If they changed from TL 10 to 15 or 15 to 10 doesn't matter.
In my example, every server in our country was set to timelimit 10 for at least the first 1, 2 years of Q3. Everyone was used to it. Everyone practiced for it. Then you go to compete at LAN, and suddenly it's 15. You just can't do that.

Tournament organizers have been notoriously out of touch with what is best for the players. To see it still happen to this day saddens me.

Of course, in Lucca, everyone has earned the spot they've earned. But another relevant point: I personally would always lose the first game at a LAN. Always. Even against players I later whooped 20-0. The new seating position, the new lighting, the noise - all variables to get used to. It used to have a huge effect on me. I've seen it affect others differently or less, but still.. you got to give competitors more playtime!


Regarding the tournament in Poland: Fuck me! That's actually only half the distance from me as Lucca. Only 550 km. Pretty safe to say, I'm there too.

And later on there was a much bigger outrage when they switched back from 15 to 10 in early QL (this was to keep bo5 rounds and accommodate more matches/players per tournament with less delays).

It's safe to say that people don't like change, even if it's good, or at least justified.

It's also safe to say that actual professional players will learn to play any rules or game (see: Shootmania, QC... ;)) That's the difference between us fans/purists/snobs and people actually playing to win :D

if it seems slow watching his stream it's because he uses a very low fov.
if you try to see it on the zoot stream, it's totally different.
but for me, he is one of the best, i've always liked to see him, very fluid.

Keel is slow. On a large open map.
Keel has a huge hitbox. On a large, hitscan based map.
Keel's ability is already extremely weak on small cramped maps, and becomes completely useless on maps like molten falls.

If he hates winning so much, he could just concede and spare the effort.

Yeah because of the pick/ban system, when reaching map 5, players pretty much pick what is left. Everything good has already been picked or banned (I think Garpy could only choose between Keel and Athena).

But on a more positive note, when it comes down to best of 5s, this was as close as it's going to get, so tense, what a way to start the day!

I really hope Garpy can come back through challenger league for the next LAN. Cypher was playing hyper (sometimes reckless) aggressive, but Garpy was just as eager to get into fights. A pleasure to watch.

There was a lot of champions available. ranger, athena, even anarki would have been a better choice, but no. Keel it is.

I think it's something about this game, because this type of stuff never happened in previous quake titles.

I'm actually surprised LAN results aren't much more chaotic. If you train / practice on your own PC and are suddenly removed from that environment, it makes a huge difference. Even if you can take your mouse, mousepad and keyboard with you, at least monitor, seating position, lighting, noise will be different.
It's not about who's the best player anymore, but more who can adapt to new circumstances better and faster. Or, more likely, who's lucky enough that the seating position and monitor is similar to what they're used to.

Putting players on uniform setups was introduced to create equal conditions for everyone. The result is the opposite.
It's like having a runner practice for months in his own shoes, and then at the contest force him to put on other shoes. Or have a racecar drive practice in his own car, and then put everyone in the same car for the race. Doesn't make sense there, doesn't make sense in E-Sports.

I believe that's the explanation you are looking for.

I think the results between online and LAN would be a lot more chaotic but almost all these players have a lot of LAN experience. Cooller, K1llsen, Rapha, DaHang, Av3k, Cypher, toxjq, etc.. They've been to dozens of LANs.

Probably some of newer-ish players (nosfa, Veneguer, cha1n, dramiS, etc.) have more chaotic results due to LAN inexperience.

most pros dont take the practice seriously, rapha does hah. cooller is classic example, only wants to 'try things out' doesnt care if wins the practice games.

Bit of an odd tourney, was expecting more from Rapha and Killsen, have to watch Rapha vs cypher to see what happened.

I eat my words, Cypher played like a beast but unfortunately got stopped by Raisy who was just machine like with superior lg.

Congrats to him, if he keeps practicing he definitely has a tournament win in him.

We watched a different game then. Cypher made huge mistakes in the champion picks and overall tactics. Cypher had the clearly superior LG aim, Raisy won it with rail, rockets, mg - but mostly via tactics.

To me it looked like Raisy was just better in everything aim wise and game mechanics.

He did almost nothing wrong, maybe made 1 error but that was all he made.

Yes, but Cypher definitely made big mistakes. He outaimed Raisy a lot. Talent-wise, Cypher is better. Sad.

I had massive respect for K1llsen and I honestly thought hes gonna win this tournament, but after loosing to Cooller and completely ignoring him for couple of minutes and not giving handshake, I lost all respect for him. I will never ever cheer for him again...no professionalism, no integrity, no respect, simply terrible behavior.

I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose. They know each other for too long.

Genius plays. I only started watching QC about 2 weeks ago, and thought this game was tailor made for Cooller. So many variables to use to your advantage, make unconventional plays and outsmart your opponents. That's just what Cooller does.

Good move by Cooller in his pre-finals interview to downplay his semi finals performance and saying Raisy was better than him. What really stood out the most was Cooller's humbleness and down to earth pre and post finals interviews.

So humble, so respectful, so chill.

Gave all his opponents praises, admitted he didn't feel in shape, the practice games were a disaster for him, everyone was beating him. Then he keeps winning match after match, and makes it look easy!

Always cool as a cucumber. In control of any aspect, even with a good aim altough it's not what beat his opponents.

cooller has always been a different player on LAN since 2006. And he still managed to get top 3/4 before the LAN grand final. He already beat raisy online as prolly any other top contenters except a few like rapha.

if you judge cooller's performance based on his practice method, which is very unconventional, like trying out new ways to play, to approach each games, not caring much if loss or win, making his opponents comfy so that he can surprise them at LAN, then you clearly don't know how cooller "works" :D

On the other hand, if you look closely at each lg battles, he wins most of them, against anyone; it's because he can both dodge like a madman and keep his tracking very effective. cooller's combat-skills and the way he moves and feels almost always relaxed while doing so, is one of the reason he never end up below top5, and that for 10(?) years now ? That and ofc his ability to understand how to play perfectly in control, and on top of that, his massive experience.

thought he was great at quakecon except for finals. in chess if you win round robin, you win the tournament....thats actually the point of round robin, so no final is needed, you see all results in the tournament since everyone plays everyone.

quake doesn't have good platform, as cs have hltv.org... esreality once was a good place and cyberfight.ru, but they are dead now for ages.. admins let idiots like heartless, sanzhes gods and others to spam here.. no news for ages and so on.. I had a hope for plusforward.net, but it's dead already too.. I am quaker for ages and I didn't see any ads for last 2 years of any QC tournaments (like I give a fuck about QC). I just suscribed few YT channels and watch some vods. thats all.

This is the thread and energy ESR needed for a while.

Great event, good casting and production, high level of play overall. How a Quake event oughta be. They managed to step it up and it gives me good hope that events like this will awaken some peoples desire to play the game again or step into competitive territory.

Cooller played out of his mind, his ztn game for instance against k1llsen is one to be remembered. Very streamlined mechanical game combined with the old school ABC control made it feel like I was watching Quake Live. The finesse and with what Heartless has previous stated 'relaxed' type of confident playing really shined through.

It's a joy to witness the bar being raised event after event. It makes the game look good.

QC might be fun to watch but people aren't going to play it ever imo

Ofc, you need a 1k Eur max 1yo PC to be able to get 150+ stable fps.
I'm getting 200+ fps in OW and my QC fps barely stays above 100.

Nah, you can go a lot cheaper, all you need is i5 9400F (which is like 160eur now) and GPU in 160-200 Eur range and you should be averaging around 170fps on low in 4on4 games.

I have 6500 + 1060 + ssd if that even matters in QC. playing 1280x720 on low 90% res scale

Your GPU usage is like 40% max so you can play on higher resolution and FPS will be the same.
CPU is the problem, there was a giant leap in performance between 7th and 8th gen (in both single and multi core).. so your 6th gen has sadly fallen behind.
1060 is fine as long as you don't enable too many effects and up the details. My old 1060 barely ever pushed above 80% usage on low details with i5-8400.

I appreciate them trying with the qpl but QC is completely dead. I really hope they'll make a more worthy successor with Q5 someday because the current crop of games (save csgo which is a shadow of 1.6) is total shit

I'm surpised that I'm not using it ^^ but I'm not a fan of anything that's trendy and is merely popular because it's gimmicky.

You can understand why but I normally don't watch the news and even on Reddit for example with ublock; I purposively block the popular/frontpage because I don't like being told what I should believe in. That and the mainstream media is extremely dishonest and divisive so it's just going to rile you up and make you either angry, frustrated or in some cases depressed so there's no point in engaging with it.

I went through a really depressive period in my life not too long ago and I believe that watching what was going on the world from only one point of view definitely contributed to my mental well-being in a negative way. Realizing though that the media isn't there to inform you but it's there to divide and encite negative emotion made me completely go cold turkey and stop giving it any attention whatsoever.

now that we have the 10min system I think it is a great show. I expect to see a higher level of play emerging in the next years

i cannot even be arsed to watch a QC game again. I really tried a lot incluiding 10 minute match games but its simply plain boring. Especially compared to Q3/QL. Alone the item respawn times of QC make the game dull. Cannot watch this. Apart from the somehow nice looking graphics but which i still cannot look at anymore because it is just not as good apart from it looking objectively better. I do not want to see it anymore. Furthermore the sound effects which are just shit, and so on, there is a real long list of QC flaws which is floating around here continuesly.

Btw you answer really belongs in the apologist thread. ;D And i don't get how you still can be optimistic about the game. I just want it to die already. I better have no Quake than this Mickey Mouse Quake. I hurts me to see how the concept of Quake and its pro players are mistreated by this game.

You cannot find QC attractive, you are not allowed to because at least item respawn is fucked up compared to real Quake. This is a fact and its a fact that it makes the game dull and uninteresting. And this is for sure not the only gameplay part that was raped by Tim Willits and his team. I cannot understand how you can say, with this knowledge in mind, that you have hope for this assaulted game. How is this possible? Dont you care about deep and exciting gameplay? Is it enough to see some known names shuffleling around wins because the game is too random? I can program you some kind of random tournament table generator if that is something that can satisfy you. Maybe you will even pay me money for this then even i can earn off your, lets say, i dont know what it is, confusion? Or hyper optimism?
