If so many reported cases are mild, then obviously there's many more cases that don't even make it into the statistics, because they can't be distinguished from a common cold.
If you apply logic, instead of fear and panic, you'll come to the conclusion that the ratio of mild to severe cases is probably even greater.

As for "Chinese rotting in their homes not being reported", stated by crackpotpl: yeah sure. Chinese don't have families, they llive alone in single huts. They don't ever have contact with the outside. If infected, they don't show any symptoms that anyone would notice and report, they just drop dead.

The lethality rate outside of China is low single digit percent, same as the numbers reported out of China. Looking purely at the Western 1st World numbers, US and Europe, the death rate is actually astronomically low.
All cases to criticial cases ratio is also similar to the Chinese numbers.

And if we let all types of new viruses that are "just like a flu" spread freely, on a long enough timeline, we would have endless variations "of a flu", which you would catch all the time and it would be a mess.
