This should seriously consider taking the game down and working on QC 2.0. This plodding along for the sake of QPL is really not helping them and I can only imagine the amount of money they are sinking into this lifeless online coverage that - whilst still enjoyable to watch - offers nothing new when you actually get excited to play again and launch it - which is every week. They did similar with FFXIV and now look at how well received it is.

I actually really enjoy QC gameplay too - the champions also - plus performance is actually not that bad on recent hardware! However no maps in over a year is a big issue and I still cannot believe there's no FreezeTag. The sad part is that all these current modes would be better without Champions and in QL, though I can see why we're at this point and it's probably the engine and decisions made early in development. They had something unique with Champions and I do think Sync did a good job with balancing them (Sorlag's model can be deleted pls), but rather than work on ways to optimize and develop the team modes to benefit champions (and add new content), they simply defaulted to classic duel where it's unfortunately inferior to previous games in many ways. This will be exactly the same with ClanArena, where as FreezeTag might have offered some unique ways to utilize the champions and ensure fights happen throughout the map and not just "at bridge" (plus noobs can go scalebearer and charge into frozen players like Tox to respawn and win the round). I think Lockbox - as hated as it was - was probably the closest thing to specific champion picks in a mode like Sacrifice based on the positions played that we had.

The notion of Champions adding replay value is broken so it's really struggled as a result, especially in modes that really take no advange of them. They offer an extra few hours of entertainment before it's just more of the same. Champions can offer unique ways to freeze/unfreeze opponents in FreezeTag, grab and defend flags and choke points, heal up your team before engaging to unfreeze an opponent - but none of this will be utilized in standard Clan Arena for example and it's a shame.

It's sad really. I do enjoy Diabotical but Quake is Quake, I'd still like for it to succeed.

I'd correct that and say that I can definitely see how champions would've added to the gameplay experience in an enjoyable way, but they didn't take advantage of it away from the 3 life duel they've now removed from competition. There was no incentive to playing specific champions in the CTF mode they temporarily added for example, it was just CTF... with champions.

I totally agree with your comments on this thread. I think the concept/idea of Quake Champions is very solid, and not given enough credit. It was clever in that it captured different movements, added some popular mechanics (with heros/champs), and softened some of the more hardcore elements that kept newbies away (round-based duels instead of time-limit duels, initially). There were some serious execution and lack of polish issues, though. Personally, I think the graphics/design/presentation of Quake Champs is really nice. But a lot of the details were lacking or completely fucked up.

The expectations and requirements from the diehard Quake community were just too high given that Q3 was polished to an excessive amount with community mods. That was the measuring stick everyone was going to compare Quake to (everyone just wants to forget what happened with Quake 4, for some reason).

No big studio is going to dedicate their resources to making a retro AFPS game these days. It's a gigantic opportunity cost when you could instead use those resources to make games that are more likely to be popular and make money. Making a true AFPS game is now on indie studios to make. Diabotical will never attain the polish of Q3 after 2 decades of community modding, but at least they can bring the retro AFPS genre into the modern day with newer features. Reflex did it, too, but people have an allergy to air control movement which is a shame.

I strongly disagree. For one, the graphics are inferior to doom 2016, and yet do not run as fast. Two, there are very very few options to disable visual clutter/distracting things. Lastly there is no quick way to just open a game and run around a map, there's even a 'search time' for localhost bot games.

When you ramp everything up it's honestly quite beautiful, visibility at times aside.

id tech 6 runs a lot smoother and looks even better. Most importantly - runs a lot smoother and that's critical for the feel of AFPS.

All the humans hit the uncanny valley in the bullseye, if you ask me.

Graphics aside, what bothered me mostly with QC when it came out was the game flow. It used to take ages to get to a game, with silly presentation screen after screen. It was designed to give champions screen time, while all I cared was to actually get in game and jump around the map before the match would start.

I also feel that id tech 6 was going to be 300 times better than the engine they used for QC. Dunno why they felt id tech 6 don't have what it takes or why didn't invest to fix what needs to be fixed for it to work.

Adding waiting time even to generate an empty offline server with bots perfectly sums up adam "syncerror" pyle's absolute retardation and its danger to the quake franchise. This is now the third quake title that inbred hack has killed. Nepotism is the killer of talent in any company.

In Ql, Freezetag variations were among the very first things requested as a means to introduce newcomers to the game. Sync & Co responded by putting all casual modes behind a paywall and threw new players into ffa against silencep.

And yet, ten years later, people are still hoping to find logic behind their decisions.

Nothing wrong with the 'Champions' concept.. except the current developer did really the worst job in the history of Quake.

It is just a really badly designed game and technicaly the worst engine in history of gaming (not only quake).
