I've only played an hour or so, but it's like 2016 but with 10x more stuff: more weapons, enemies, movement stuff, upgrades, side things to do, etc.. It's actually too much for me, atm. I'm trying to remember all the damn binds and press the wrong key half the time. They throw it at you pretty quick.
Playing it atm @ Ultra Violence difficulty, couple hours in, must say I really like the game so far.
I've played (finished) the 2016 DOOM also and I enjoyed that one too, but so far I like this one even better.
I'm in my 40's now (dammit), so for nostalgy reasons I've played a few ancient Doom II levels while downloading this one. Oh my, the difference, it's beautiful.
I already found myself standing on various ledges, gazing at the surroundings a couple times already. Very nice.
The game is not cheap, but if you can afford it, i'd say give it a try.
Still havent played Doom 16 past 2 maps. I upgraded pc recently so I will play it fully, however, its not as fun as Doom 2 with a port like GZdoom and some cool megawad.. from what I played. The enemies drop amo and health which annoys me. The fatalities are scripted and thus get old after a while. Monsters arent placed like on original Doom, they just respawn. It feels like Painkiller to me the small amount i played thats the kinda game that it felt like. Its pretty cool for modern games standard tho, feels fast and responsive.

Fatalities are not mandatory every time you see an enemy in that state. Especially if you are good. Also you have quite the variety depending how you swipe your mouse/where you are positioned and can be quite cool when you know the different variants and go wild with them. Each on it's own on that one ofc.
Also I like it's not 1:1 with doom 1 or 2, because we already have that and can play it with MODs like brutal doom. So, I prefer something fresh and if you ask me (and quite a lot of people if you go by reviews, opinions and so on) - they did exceptionally well with 2016 and eternal.
Problem is, the monsters light up like a christmas tree and your brain tells you "fatality this fucker to get more and ammo and health", so you end up doing it every time. And if you disable the lightinign effect, you dont know when you have to fatality some guy.
I haven't played DooM 2016/Eternal yet but it surely looks really gimmicky.
Shit out ammo > Chainsaw > Low health > Glory kill
There should be a counter at the end showing how many times you looked at the same animation.
But maybe it's fun to play, gotta check it out someday.
I really really bet not. Have not played neither of the two though. Only watched videos and decided it’s not worth it. It starts with the plasma first and for most. Compare the sound of Doom 1/2 plasma with that of the Doom 2016/Eternal plasma. Compare the sound of all the weapons. See how the enemies light up like christmas trees. See how they drop random colorful items that glow. Doom 1/2 did not do that. The enemies did never light up and they only dropped that kind of ammunition that they were using for their own weapons and the dropped items did not look like they where shiny toys. In Eternal i see all the enemies talk like in Skyrim. There a knights which attacking with a sword and having a shield wtf. They talk like real humans. See the walking speed which is like in Counter Strike. See the way points which takes away the need to think by yourself and thus reduces the connectedness to the game. See the double barreled shotgun having some medival looking bayonett thing on it. This feels a little like with Diablo 3 which was invaded by WoW. I also saw spells and magic in Eternal iirc. I am pretty sure that i would not enjoy 2016 or Eternal. It’s a matter if taste of course. But i like atmosphere in a game. If the plasma sounds like it is shooting cotton wool i am done with it. ;D
Doom 2016 has not much in common with Doom anymore, the best thing about is the sound track, made by an individual artist outside of id. Game is not bad, it gives you a bit of challenge on ultra violence, but I cant say I particularly enjoyed playing it. There are some interesting fighting mechanics in there, definitely better than most other fps, but somehow the single player of Half Life is still more atmospheric and better ... its basically some quake 3 arena where you go from arena to arena and shoot different kind of bots ... but there is no immersive story in there and at some point it gets a bit old ... put another Name on Doom 2016 and noone would care really ... its still the name that carries that game
It's not the name, it*s the universe of Doom that carries the franchise.
I agree both new Doom's are very different from the classics (I count Doom64 as classic as well). Some good stuff like graphics, great modern soundtrack, capturing some of the dark athmosphere of the original.
Unfortunately the core gameplay is not as satisfying as the classics. It is not at all the same to SSG blast an enemy away, the classics just have that certain genius.
For this case only, I would have preferred a remake. Give us the classic Doom formula with modern graphics and sound effects but do not change a thing from core gameplay. Maybe add some more good level wads.
Doom eternal changes that "from one arena to another" feel. As for the other parts, can't argue as it's individual. I personally enjoy both playing doom/doom2/WADs/brutal doom/etc and the new doom's. Have enough of the "old one" to desire it done again with new gfx and ofc flop outside nostalgic people like us. 2016 and eternal are great games in all directions imho.
its true, eternal is much better than doom 2016 in terms of atmosphere, I am still at the beginning though, because not really time for it ... and bethesda servers are somehow down here too ...
maybe this could be the first real title in the series after doom 1 (doom 2 was only dlc material, doom 3 claustrophobic shitgame didnt even finish, doom 2016 some good combat mechanis, but atmosphere like some soso generic space shooter)
I reckon it would be a bit of a waste if you had a groundbreaking engine and made only one game with it.
I think it's better to think of Doom 2 as a WAD, and the ability to make all those WADs was a great thing about the original game.
People were enjoying all those without feeling that they somehow weren't that good because they were all running on the same engine.
Besides, I think they learnt a lot about how to make maps while making Doom 1, and that's why Doom 2 has such great maps, in my opinion.
For me, it's definitely one of the enjoyable Doom games, and it had a different flavour to Doom 1 anyway. Novel coding isn't the only way to achieve that.

paid WAD that is, but at least it brought the mancubus and revenant characters ... still it could have had some more monsters and 2 weapons more,. for me personally the double shotgun is not so great ... Cant also say Doom 2 maps are that much better than Doom 1 maps ... Doom 2 had some end bosses in regular levels and this changes gameplay a bit, I still remember that cyberdemon shooting rockets at you from the top in 29th level or something ... but apart from the 5 new monsters and endbosses in regular levels I am not sure the levels were so much superior, still a good game, but does not really warrant full price ...
I will bet most people in 1994 who played Doom 2 did not pay for it. :P
I feel the maps in the first mission of Doom 1 were very well done, but maybe they got a bit rushed after that. They probably also wanted the shareware release to make a good impression. Doom 2 just feels very polished to me, and when it came out, I certainly wasn't thinking, "oh damn, this is just more of the same".
and I am really happy to have it, even paid for it for my iphone.
Btw, if one is on android: delta touch is a MUST! You can run everything there, including brutal doom and the likes with all effects and full speed on last years flagships! It got 6 engines + versions of them to choose from.. insane stuff and a lot better vs the "original port". Controls are also a lot better and customisable in the delta touch, actually "a lot" is not doing them justice, they obliterate the original port. For some on the go rip and tear action, otherwise nothing can replace the good old PC. :D
on topic: I love doom 2, but I can also agree it should had more enemies and atleast 1-2 more new weapons. Not gonna complain tho as I love it as it is too.
No way am I buying another pile of shit game from Bethesda. Looks exactly like 2016 and that game was short lived bore fest. Quick look at stream confirms another carbon copy of borefest. Why is there animations of killing a guy and candy popping out of them? I want to see limbs flying off and guts as I SHOOT them. Interesting gib effects should not be a thing of the past.
The most funny part in your post is that in doom eternal gibs fly all over the screen + there is dmg model on all enemies, i.e. you rip and tear body parts/meat from them while shooting and they are still alive. :)
I'm really not sure how this qualifies as DLC. So many things have been changed, even the engine. It's clear that an immense amount of work has gone into making this game, whether it is to your taste or not.
Doom 2 was more similar to Doom 1 than Doom Eternal is to Doom 2016, but Doom 2 is still my favourite Doom game.

Some of my favourite games were almost identical to their original.
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is one of them, a game that was hounded for the time as too similar to the original yet if it were released today it would be getting 10/10's.
Agree. Playing @ ultra violence, I just met the fucker today, haven't been able to put him down so far. After getting beat up like 15 times or so, I called it a day Just for health sakes.Damn.
At first it is as we are used to have plenty of ammo, soon you will integrate ways of earning ammo into your gameflow + there are updates for ammo capacity that ups the limit on all the weapons.
Warcraft 3 is a good buy there. I never played through the campaign when I owned the disks and so here I am playing the campaign and loving it. Fuck. Why did I never play the campaign?
Depth of Field blurs the background image, Chromatic aberration blurs the sides of the pov.
Depth of Field rarely works well for any game imo, I've only found 1 game where I preferred it on versus off.
Chromatic Aberration is aids and should always be turned off. Resolutio Scaling is only good if your PC can handle it, I played recent SP games with full 200% resolution scaling, sacraficing fps for graphic fidelity, RE3 looks insane at 60 frames with 4k.
Turn off Lens Blur as well, Lens Dirt and Film Grain.

Made it through a while ago, then played it again to get to 100%.
The 2nd half of the game is pretty nuts. You really have to learn to use all the abilities to make it through, but if you do, hell yeah :) Often the whole screen is packed full of enemies and weapons fire. No game does that better than Doom (Eternal).
The game is ok, yo can see many DEVs are Doom fans.
I love that not everyone in big companies are money-grabbing greed-whores, but some resist by...different means :) Well done, DEV who 'accidentally' left the original files in. The hero we need.
Also don't ever give bethesda another nickel until they stop and reverse the sell-out.
Same goes for the other riders of the gaming apocalypse: EA, Ubisoft, Blizzard. If you give them any money, your are part of the retardation.
I probably like it a little better so far than the 2016 Doom, because it has somewhat more variety.Little tip: turn sharpness all the way up in the gfx options. Game is shockingly blurry on standard settings, even with everything turned to max. auto clicker
