I don't think it's placebo because I feel the exact same way and the majority of top pros don't touch dpi above 800 I've noticed

nah most pro uses 800dpi just because it's fast enough on windows as well as not being too slow, like it's the "perfect" middle, and what they're used to for years and years now, so they can't bother going above that 800 value, as they don't care and see no real point in doing so, so they keep 800dpi

On my Razer Abyssus Essential I could go up to 7200 dpi, but don't use anything above 1800, because it just doesn't behave linearly anymore. Even 1800 doesn't, compared to older mice (I still have Microsoft "Optical Mouse Blue" and "Laser Mouse 6000" from the electronic stone ages lying around).

I'm pretty sure you could measure / prove that, but why, for something you know to be true anyway? Just to convince another person on the Internet, and not get anything back for your time? No thanks.

And you're right, all the pros i've seen asked why they stick to 400 dpi in game when on desktop its a nightmare and requires constant sswitching answered the same way: i feel/perform better with 400 dpi.

Yeah 400-800 seems to be the two most used DPI'S when it comes to professional gaming, down to personal preferance at the end of the day but there's truth in it.

I find 400dpi is easier to control, especially long range but 800dpi helps more in close range fights because the lower input lag makes it faster. So both have their pros and cons but if you prefer high sens I would go with 800dpi. Personally I prefer 400dpi for ql but if I was playing a faster game like qc I would use 800dpi.

That's just like your opinion man. I know in theory higher dpi should help more in long range fights because of the extra precision but it's almost like it's too precise. I don't like how the sensor reacts to every single movement. Whereas with a lower dpi mouse I can hold and control each movement. That's what I mean by easier to control. This is what I think makes the MLT04 sensor so special (if you ignore the shitty max speed). But there is no point arguing about this with you because it's highly subjective. I'm just stating my opinion.

And when I say long range fights I mean long range lg fights. For long range rail zoom fights higher dpi is probably more preferable but I wouldn't know.

I like to use higher DPI values nowadays (3000-6000) as it makes ADS/zoom aiming less grainy than doing the same with 800 DPI.

For desktop use, I have a second profile that lowers it down to 1100 DPI, which is what I prefer when browsing, photoshopping etc etc.
But in FPS games, I'm using 6000 DPI atm.

One good reason to use lower DPI is if you're playing really old Unreal Engine games (like UT99). That engine does not handle very low mouse sensitivites well at all. So you kinda have to use low DPI in order to get a higher in-game sens value for it to work properly.

But newer games and games with better engines (Q3/ET/CS), it's no problem with high DPI and low in-game sensitivity.

I shouldn't have used the word "input lag" but higher dpi (up to 3200?) is more reactive than lower dpi - https://www.overclock.net/forum/375-mice/1631...ive-3.html . That doesn't mean it's better though.

Two different things.
And yes, the 3360 should be kept at or under 2100 DPI.
The 3389 should be kept at or under 1800 DPI.

Yes, correct @ ADS being iron sight or zooming in Q3/QL and UT.

Zooming brings up a lower FOV, which basically means lower resolution (in layman's terms).

Best way to explain this is to try it yourself.

Go into QL (I assume its the same in ET) and type "cg_fov 10" in the console. Now move your mouse as little as absolutely possible. Notice how the crosshair 'jumps' from pixel to pixel.

Now, repeat the same thing, using a high DPI (don't forget to lower the in-game sens to match the old sens/DPI). Notice how the crosshair 'jumps' a shorter distance compared to before.

Basically, the higher your DPI is, the more precise your crosshair is, as it has more pixels to snap to because there is a higher resolution (in your mouse).

In real world use, even 400 DPI is enough for most people not to notice any difference. But once you're zooming/iron sighting, the low DPI becomes really obvious, once you realise it.

Of course, the whole "400 DPI is enough!" crowd has been very effective at convincing new players that 400 DPI really is enough. After all, the old schoolers have been playing for many years, and are better at the game than the newbies. So the newbies never question the whole 400 DPI thing, and just go along with it, thinking it is the best. Going on to perpetuate the 'lie' to other newbies. It never ends.

The real reason why old schoolers are still using 400/800 DPI is that they have been using it for many years (decades in many cases)... and you can't teach old dogs new tricks, as they say.

They've used this for so long that anything new will feel wrong to them, even though it is technically better to use higher DPI.

In defense of Quakers, I have to say, you could probably play Quake with 5 DPI. You never really have to make those really pixel precise shots in Quake that you have to pull off in UT on maps like Deck and LavaGiant etc (without zoom). In Quake, all gameplay is really up close, and you don't need a very precise mouse resolution. Its beyond me that people actually use zoom in Quake, in fact.

Once you get into games like UT and CS, 400 DPI can become a handicap. In CS, people just lower their sensitivities to the extreme. Like a metre per 360 degree turns etc. That way, you can get away with 400 DPI as well, of course.

Anyway, high DPI is technically better than low DPI in games that don't shit the bed at higher DPI (namely old Unreal Engine games and probably other games that I don't know about) *if you have a mouse that doesn't add input lag or any deceleration or acceleration at higher DPI, which the HERO sensor does not.

I have played at 16k with this sensor before on my GPW. But the sens is so high in the menu UI that I had to lower it. In game it was fine (Quake Live, Quake Champions, Overwatch)

Obviously, 16K is a bit extreme. Even zooming at 16k DPI won't feel noticably different than zooming with, say, 5000 DPI.
But once you come down to 2000'ish, there is a definite difference from that and up to 16k.

So, if I were playing with a HERO sensor atm, I'd use as high as possible, as long as the menu UI doesn't freak out. (usually has to be under 6k).

I'm using a Razer Viper Mini atm, which maxes out at 8500 DPI. I use it at 5400 DPI. Higher than that, I can't control the menu UI in the games I play. If it were not for the menu UI, I'd use it at 8500 DPI.
This mouse does not have any issues with input lag or deceleration/acceleration at any DPI range, just as your G MX518 doesn't have either.

For normal gameplay there won't really be a difference between high or low DPI.
How ever, some old games might cause troubles with high DPI (e.g. ET,QL,Q3)?

Just got told that sensitivity downscales with zoom/ads. So there won't be any "grainy" problem. Ofcourse a test with cg_fov 10 won't reproduce this correctly.

Its really insignificant; the whole ADS/low FOV thing.

If you aren't using super high sens, and using 400 DPI, it won't impact your gaming much (or at all).
No need to worry about it.

I see so many posts that 'shame' people for using more than 800 DPI.
The people that do that are living in the past. If you are using a modern Logitech sensor (HERO) or a modern Razer sensor, there is no 'smoothing', no input lag or neg/pos. acceleration at any DPI value.

So, for people with those mice, it is technically best to use the highest DPI value.
BUT it is such a tiny difference that it is not worth squabbling about.

My advice:
Use what you like.
But if you do a lot of zooming/ADS'ing/iron sighting, I would use values above 2000 DPI. (but only with modern Logitech and Razer mice. Some Steelseries sensors [truemove3+] are good up till 3600 DPI)

don't remember the url but past 3 500dpi, all of the most recent mice with 3360 base will add "smoothing/prediction" or thing(s) like that
below or equal to 3 500dpi = all fine, works the same as 400 800 1600, in term of responsiveness/input etc

They, and the other gaming mouse companies, have claimed that for their flagship mices for more than a decade, and invariably that's been a lie, sometimes by little, sometimes by a lot.

Why do all those "raw" sensors give a different feeling from each other and at different dpi values? (keeping the same cm/360 down to the mm, just modifying the dpi accordignly)

There was an excellent thread here on esr just some months ago about some guy who analyzed the code of logitech's gaming drivers.

They're an absolute mess, they overwrite your settings constantly and most importantly have weird acceleration/deceleration settings that aren't mentioned in menus or officially.

And those are logitech's drivers. Razer's synapse are basically malware.

I use 2000 with a rival 100, I mainly play QL and Cs go, I wanted to RG sens to be my sens for cs. Tbh my sens is a little high for Cs go, but finding the sweet spot is hard.

old mouse sensors got pretty straight smoothing algorithms on higher DPI values to exclude cursor jitter issue. It isn't much better now with 3366/3389/hero16 afaik so its pretty safely to use 400-1600dpi: no smoothing kicked-in and no jitters whatsoever with sufficient cursor speed even for 4k monitors
