The reason I remember this is because I was a huge fan of Akiles, his aim was sick especially his pixel rails.

You vaguely remember probably the most epic thread on ESR, never said anything in it at the time, but you THINK akiles got caught cheating BEFORE sombra got caught, even though nobody else in that thread mentioned anything of the sort

I admit my memory is hazy on it...since I have let's call it an aiming disability (I'm 99% left handed but use the mouse in my right hand for some unknonw reason) I was always obsessed with the best aimers, especially before mice, pads and general aim made the big jump around 2003 or so.

So Akiles was always on my radar and I enjoyed his mechanics and especially insane pixel rails a lot.
But then something big happened that made him vanish. It was either cheat, or I remember wrong and he simply quit playing and some 15 years later mym meory fails me.

No way it would not be huge on ESR if it happened, is what I'm saying.

Sombra supposedly got caught in some irrelevant online tournament and it spawned a clusterfuck of drama over some screenshot. So yeah, someone that placed 2nd in the world being caught cheating would have gotten a million replies.

Like I said before, I used to watch this guy play pretty much every tournament and he was always clean. So either people have dementia or have an agenda to discredit him now too after SombrA.

That said, I could not find anything at all by web search...absolutely nothing, besides horribly pixelated vods on youtube of noteworthy games.

So I was wrong, Akiles never cheated.

I got him mixed up with sombra and probably some other incident.

I also enjoyed the games from that guy. Akiles was one of the oldest players from the golden era. Real life obligations made him spend less time training. On an interview before ESWC 2003 he said he was inactive and practiced briefly before the tournament. After that, it was the begining of the end for professional gaming basically. Q4 was never an enjoyable game. By the time the (brief) revival of Q3 and QL happened he was retired.
I also remember his pixel rails and his very weird mouse setup (+forward with mouse1 and +backward with mouse2), +fire with ctrl. You don't see these things anymore. Looks like an old school setup someone would have used in Doom.

Anyway, I have no idea how people can drop the cheater bomb out of nowhere by "vagely remember something" with no proof. This is a joke.

I don't have the time to re-read the entire thread, but from what I can reckon from memory, the proof was basically the screenshot. Images can be modified easily, so the demo would need to be inspected as well.
It was just really strange that the guy would use cheats in some irrelevant online tournament. Here's what Legie said:

And if that is true where are the demos of the fight cause a screenshot proves nothing about a fact. I mean its easy to fake a screenshot with Photoshop. All the e-sport comunity and society is living a contest where everyone can talk and blaspheme about almost everything showing 0 proves just to ruin someone´s life in this case 12 years of quake. Everyone can vote everyone can give his opinion and that makes a lot of posts of people that post instantly and dont know nothing about this problem.
What I want to show is my own opinion of the problem which I think I´ve got good knowledge about it.

Please stop the crap against spanish players. They are only shocked that someone they know for so long did something like this.
To those willing to defend Sombra, please read the following.
We have a wrongdoer here. The question is who. The number of people that could have the screenshots is limited. I see three options:

1) The wrongdoer is not Sombra, nor Lergie, but someone else (one of the spectators). Sombra confirmed he sent the screenshots. So the only option here would be that Sombra's mail was lost, and Lergie just received the wrongdoer's email containing the faked screenshots. If Lergie confirms that he received the screenshots just a few minutes after the match, then the wrongdoer is not only lucky (that Sombra's true mail got lost) but also quick at faking screenshots, probably having the radar layer already loaded in photoshop. The wrongdoer also faked a second screenshot that he later published within this discussion. This option sounds quite unlikely. Many things could have gone wrong for the wrongdoer (sombra not deleting his own screenshots, sombra’s mail not being lost, etc…).
2) The wrongdoer is Lergie. He faked the whole thing. It appears that there was enough time between Sombra's mail and the public upload of the incriminating screenshots to actually fake them. Compared to the previous, this option is simpler in term of sequence of events, and is technically much more feasible. Though, the question would be what kind of motif Lergie had to do something like this. Unless someone can prove that Lergie had serious clash with Sombra in the past, this option is quite unlikely, though possible.
3) The wrongdoer is Sombra. During this match he used the cheat, he forgot to turn it off, and sent his screenshots incriminating himself. This is the simplest option as it fits the timing of the sequence of events, and is the simplest in all respects (technique and motivation). The open questions here are: Why did Sombra do something like this? Cheating after his long respected career, especially in a tournament like this, a match like this… it makes little sense.

Although it might be hard to accept, given the current evidences, the third option is by a big measure the most probable.
It is true that the witch-hunting atmosphere of this whole discussion makes the thing even harder for Sombra: any word from him makes him look guiltier, and this is not a matter of true facts or evidences, but it the psychological effects of having a jury that declared you guilty before you even spoke. Though Sombra could have reacted in a better way, avoiding legal threats, trying to find something to prove his innocence, or simply by confessing his guilt.
Whatever the truth is, this is a sad story.

As far as faking the screenshot, it would be very easy to do, I think I could do that rather quick in paint.net if I had a plan to do it. I would need to take the screenshot of the end of the game. Then just load the radar graphics and stuff from the pk3 files of the cheat and layer it on top. However, im not sure exactly how much time we are talking about between the end of the match and sending the email to see if there is a reasonable gap to get the job done.

It would have helped the case tremendously. However for some reason, such IP tracking job was never done afaik. We had match IP's, email IP's, website IP's, IRC IP's... if the IP where the screenshot was sent from didn't match, all alarms would turn on.

Im not saying he didn't cheat, im just saying I wouldn't bet big money on it because there's some gaps.

In any case, this is about Akiles and Thooorin fucked up bigly. The dude gets paid by patreons to say accurate information, we don't.
