But seriously, you don't really need more frames. It's not that since you have a 240 hz monitor you have to have 240 frames.

Anyway if you really must, upgrade the ram. Go for the 60 pounds option. But it's wasted moneys for QC, especially since frames will always feel inconsistent anyway.

Some years ago, I had a 2500K and upgraded to a 3770.

I really felt the difference in some (cpu bound) games.

But I never overclocked (I'm lazy) so this is also why.



OFC the must is upgrading the ram: 16 gb ram nowadays is the standard, and some games swap as fuck with less ram.

Edit: Sorry im really tired and just assumed you were talking about QL. Disregard. What I said about the upgrades is still mostly true. Possibly QC could get about a 5-10% boost from 2133 ram unlike QL where it would not matter as much.

I do have another computer here, a Gen1 i5 with a ati 6950 but im not gonna bother to install QL and check, im just gonna go with my gut instinct and say:

2500k at 4.2ghz with a 1080 is probably enough to get 4000fps in QL if it wasnt capped at 250...

There are often reasons this game does not run right, to do with the spagetti code produced by porting it into a browser and then porting it back to a exe, along with all the dectection running for achivements and also the update that brought fixed framerates at multiples/divisions of 250

Please note that I believe (off top of my head) that 180 and 200fps are some of these multiples and you are just hitting framerate caps and not in any way at all is it caused by a lack of cpuy/gpu/ram speed or power.

Check you have it set to com_maxfps 250
Also try both the command com_idlesleep 1 or 0.

You might also check that you dont have vsync enabled. Using Vsync will cap you at 240fps but this is not a valid quake live framerate, so it will likely drop down to the next multiple, maybe 200 or something. This is actually a high possiblity of the cause of your issue. Also gsync freesync adaptive sync whatever turn that stuff off.

If its still a problem, hopefully we get more thread responses from others for better ideas.

As a side note if we just assume for arguments sake that it was a lack of power ( its not) then none of your suggested upgrades will net you a 25% framerate increase and push you to 250fps.

Upgrading to 2133 ram will make the computer maybe 3% faster. Upgrading to a 3770k maybe 15% faster.

my honest opinion just change the game. quakeworld 666fps, quake live 333 fps, why on earth quake c runs like a hog, i mean i did ask for graphics, but only because of the stupud ser marketeers who think graphics matter as much as causing lags and other bs like that, if you look at majority of games in esports they have pisspoor graphics compared to sp games, fortniote, looks like playdog, csgo looks like some brownish version of cs 1.6 and so on. if graphics matters than i think it would also undermine visibility for most people. look at all major sports, very high visibility green grass vs players, quake series, not so much in any given game at default settings, fails all the time.

Qc runs bad cuz of direct x 11.

You are probably cpu-bound most of the times with the 1080. Do the 2nd option.
It might not be a lot better maximum fps wise in many games, but it will definitely show in the worst 1% frametimes.
Also, things will be a lot better/smoother on the long run, especialy if you like to have browsers, discord and whatnot running in the background while gaming.
Do it if you can afford it

ps.: forgot to say that ivy bridge will also eat less power while doing more.

9700k @ 5.4ghz nets me 400+ frames on all duel maps, although player count and map size do matter. Some maps (like Citadel) are also VERY poorly optimized.

Set res scale to 75%, get a better CPU.

Don't update for QC its just not worth it.

i was using a heavily OC'd i7-2600k @4,8ghz and 16gb ram @2133mhz, fps were mostly at 150-230fps in teamgames. it was comparable to a i7-4770k.

i wouldnt upgrade for QC, since that game is actually "dead" and a i7 wont do much (qc needs only 4 cores). also 140fps are enough for it.

also more ram wont help you, except for better loading times at higher texture settings.
but you wont get any fps boost from it, as long as youre not at 100% usage.
better save some money and get something decent later.

if you want more fps now: get a used 9900k or a new 10700k, 10600k, alternatively ryzen3700x
new mainboard/ram is needed.

I've picked up some crucial ddr3 16gb (2 x 8) 2400mhz ram to replace my 8gb 1333mhz (cost £66) and Im going to push my cpu to 4.6ghz rather than current 4.2. I'll see what that gains me. Thanks for your replies

I parted with my 2500k based system last year when I gave it to a relative kid.

Now I am running a 3700x and yea it's a ton better.

Just get 4700x (when released) or whatever fits your budget. Same for video cards. Just wait a couple of months. A lot of big launches are just around the corner. Plenty of new tech to choose from.

Just stay away from Intel.

Update - pushed the cpu to 4.6 and added 16gb 2400mhz now I see 200-250fps, huge gain :)
