My idea is, that we all put money together and then buy QL from Bethesda or whatever. Then we give collerz, cypha, ropha, and players moneyz so that they play for us.
Besides, having a legends cup for some dough won't revive QL. You would get more from community tournaments, like a monthly FFA cup or the ctf draft cups.
10k a month??? ... u out of your mind? ... so MUCH money ... its not like they had 1 million dollars to spoil for one single tournament for an unfinished beta quake, which they could have used instead to run every month a 10k cup for 8 and a half years
I [+]'d you for the FFA cup or CTF draft cups bit, but since you're an ungrateful little cunt who tries to be a smartass you can go fuck yourself.
You actually came to your senses for a second when you said having legends cup won't revive shit, but I guess you'd rather enter dreamworld like the other idiots who wank over such romantic ideas.
Had the same thought from time to time. Would take a lot of money. Strategy would be something like this?: Arrange online tourneys followed by a big fat LAN with big fat cash prizes, would need some substantial cash in the online tourneys too. Buy a shitload of keys and give away during streams, would need to be QL (Steam) if you'd stand a chance in luring in new players. The main tourney would propably have to be a team game, duel would be the secondary game mode, think getting new players. Now all we need is that someone with these thoughts wins the Eurojackpot or something... That's only half of it, would need a lot of community tourneys and a platform like CB to run them on.
It is criminal that Q3 isn't the immutable standard of 1v1 fps dueling. It's like telling Kasparov to learn a different chess board ruleset every 2 years because the current rules became out of trend with the zoomers. Seriously, esports is such a fucking joke/scam.
So what difference does it make? Just because it's played by less people, you shouldn't get to fuck it up for these that still play. Chess never changed its rules to appeal for mass audience.
The rules of Q3 1v1 haven't changed or been fucked with. You can still play Q3 1v1 the way it was before. There are just other quake games with their own variations of 1v1.
Your definition of eSport is not what eSport is. You may have been brainwashed by thinking these shitty games are worth being called eSport just because a lot of people play them.
I know it hurts that Q3 is dead and that you only associate Q3 to esports, but you're just being delusional and refuses to accept the truth because it hurts too much.
There's the ideal dream world, and reality. Don't get mixed up.
Indeed, Starcraft is the only other game worth calling eSports. The hallucination that implies because some fucktardo puts a lot of money on tournament to promote a shit game is what eSports should be includes morons like you.
Before trying to get personal and using big words like "moron" maybe you should consider how idiotic your reasoning is.
You somehow feel that you can dictate what is or isn't esport based on your own taste and preference, sorry buddy that's not how the world works.
What made games eSport is the fact that there are professional gamers making a living out of those games by playing them. If there's a competitive scene with cash prizes and you can making a living out of playing it, it's eSport. If there's no money, it's not eSport.
Just don't feel too butthurt to see that Overwatch, CounterStrike, DOTA, LoL and whatnot are more eSport than quake today.
Not that bad idea but because copyright issues it could not be called Quake. plus bethesda already have a court case against Carmack because of Oculus?
QL with better support for mods would be great, or an improved Q3.
I usually hate on pessimists but I just don't see diabotical becoming big to be honest.
I think this is the last straw for arena FPS unless a brand new concept arises that can drive as many players as all these new battle royal games.
The only reason QC has done alright is because Quake is a big name and franchise. If that game had come out named as something like just "Champions" or "Space Champions" with no link to the original quakes, I bet it would have half its current player base if that.
thats true about quake ... its all about quake and id ... I will definitely try diabotical and give it a chance ... but the thing is diabotical is not really a singular title either, a lot of people backed this game because of 2goods name in the quake community and as a general caster, so in someway the backing success of diabotical is also due to marketing ... thats the sad thing about games, the concepts behind the game are overshadowed by superficial marketing factors, but this has also already been the case for Q3A
Exactly, the majority of the people who know of Diabotical are people who know 2gd or just from quake communities like ESR.
Without some major marketing campaigns and something to appeal to non-quakers, the game will never be big (maybe they're not really planning for it to be big anyway).
Nowadays games become popular mostly because they belong to a famous franchise / game series (call of duty, GTA, etc.) or because there is a lot of marketing, hype and viral effect behind it (PUBG, Fortnite, OW, etc.).
For a game without a big marketing budget and with no brand awareness and which on top of that belongs to a rather niche category of games in arena FPS, the chances of success are rather slim unfortunately.
On a more serious note, if you are at all interested it is a lot of work, but you can get it done. Here are some things to keep in mind that I learned as we setup and grew the CPMA Discord.
Discord
Create a Discord server, invite reputable and trusted people to help admin and moderate. Create a series of roles which will cover your bases, and an appropriate amount of text and voice channels. Generally the CPMA Discord server is probably one of the best in terms of setup (there are some small issues which would require massive amount of work, read: not worth it), and you should take a look there to see what they have done and copy same.
Adding to above, ensure that new/low skill players have a private room so they are not feasted upon by veterans. This will allow them to have fun playing Quake without getting squished into smithereens.
Also regarding above, ensure new members in your discord are forced to join a private room that existing members cannot see. This means setting up the discord so that all channels are effectively private until they are given a base role which will give them access to base channels e.g. #general, #offtopic, etc...This will allow you to track who is coming into your community and spot out trolls/idiots/spammers quickly.
Roles are meaningless. Yes, that is true but people love them. Create roles for your special players (legends, elite players, beginners, level designers, streamers etc...). It makes people feel special and warm.
Create #info and #announcement channels. Do not allow people to talk in here (disable send text).
Create a #streams channel and use a bot (mee6) to post to that channel when a streamer that is in the community goes live. Disable chat in this channel for regular users.
Use sensible colours for roles.
Create channels for sizeable sub-communities e.g. #leveldesign.
Avoid creating an excessive amount of text and voice channels, further partitioning means conversations, dialogue, and drama will never really intersect so you end up with a bunch of effectively empty channels which only has text from the resident stream spammer(s).
Get a pickup bot, Leshaka created a great one for the CPMA community and it appears like other communities are also using it (PuboBot).
Get a discord.me short link so your invites are all discord.me/QuakeLive. It will avoid having to send weird and arbitrary (scary!) links and generally makes spreading the link easier because you don't need to refer to a webpage.
Your Discord rules should be very generic, in CPMA it's a simple "Don't be a dick." This avoid lots of legal backflipping idiotic members attempt to do to circumvent any discipline because "it's not in the rules!"
Do not let people who think "freedom of speech" is the same thing as "freedom from consequence" run rampant. You have to realize that your community will be very small and as a result very fragile. Do not create a safe space for racism/biggotry/homophobia conspiracy nuts. Make examples of these people and create a culture which is about playing together instead of raging morons. Just imagine this is not a virtual space. These people will play the least and generally annoy/upset any potential existing/new players/members of your community. They are there to disrupt and allowing that behavior to go unchecked is corrosive. Let those people organize themselves and they will soon realize their social incompetence.
Once you are setup and have a strong group of like-minded admins and moderators, invite everyone you know and their mother. Send it to people via steam, other discord's, twitter, facebook, VK, ESReality, Plusforard, reddit (r/arenafps, r/quakechampions, r/quake, r/quakelive). Do not be shy about this. Your community's future depends on its ability to attract members.
Do NOT underestimate the power of known names, you should attempt to get as many big names to join and have them highlighting in a special role at the top so new members can see them. More people will take it seriously. It's a psychological trick, but again, you have to be able to say "I did everything I can."
Speak to your admins and mods. Avoid making unilateral decisions. Keep the dialogue open and respectful. The second people think that disrespect is permissible behaviour, they will become either demotivated and will eventually leave (or become permanently inactive).
Social Media
Create the appropriate social media accounts, chiefly a reddit account and a twitter account, with the same name. Tweet, retweet, like, re-post, etc... Stay engaged.
Create a a gmail account of the same name so you can setup other "official" accounts.
Create a simple and easy use and direct website e.g. www.quakelivecommunity.com. This should be a clean website with links to your Discord as well as any instructions for installing, playing (tutorials), etc... This website should not intend to be a textual hub like ESReality/Plusforward/reddit, it is simply not needed.
Community Events
Events can be broken down into the day-to-day activity, and special marked events where people register ahead of time. You need to focus on the day-to-day activity more than special events, once you get enough momentum the first event you host will be a lot of fun because they were will be hype.
Focus on getting pickup's going, create a specific role for pickup-players (again see CPMA Discord) so that way you can @message all potentially interested players without annoying everyone else on the server (a work around for @everyone spam).
Before announcing any scheduled events, you should contact the players with the ability to draw a crowd to see when they are available.
Scheduled events should be planned one week before announcement, and the announcement should be two weeks before the event. This will ensure you are organized and have enough time to spread the news and give players time to book off their calendars. I have a tournament checklist I use to make sure I have everything covered, can send it to you if you need.
Always speak to relatively big streamers who are interested in Quake (not Champions) e.g. nvc. Casual community streamers are always a last resort -- these people usually do not have the same kind of stream setup and mental toughness to plow through a 2-4-8 hour stream.
Ensure you create a relatively unique name for your cups, "125fps Cup #124" isn't as easy to use or as memorable in terms of naming.
Ensure two weeks prior to the event that you have made your event announcement post on ESReality, Plusforward, reddit, and twitter.
Speak to Plusforward admins and start recording every event you have host. This will have a couple of effects: First it creates a clean tournament directory/respository, second it allows for competitive rank to be assigned, finally, it creates a very clean news hub that you can constantly point to.
Once you've done all this, just consistently run well organized tournaments that pressure players in completing their games/matches. Do not allow for slackers to slow things down. You must PUSH players as much as possible. Time is important for people, do not let players think their's is worth more than someone else's.
Anyway, that's just a starting point. You will need to work hard, be friendly/respectful, and you will slowly build a very cool community that is independent of id software. Generally you have much more resources to work with (and a great guide) as the QL community was bigger than CPMA and has some cool things like Steam integration (workshops). Message me for more advice.

Does anyone want to do something with this domain? It's about to expire again. If anyone wants to, I will keep providing the domain and a server to host.
This is really good stuff. Its more evident than ever that Game devs are not implementing community features into games so we are the ones responsible for that. It is also more us, (the people) who has value (viewer numbers for example) and not so much super graphics/hardware manufacturers anymore.
I think ID and Bethesda could make a profit by releasing some classic updated and fixed Quake pack. With similar ranking system as Quake Champtions and with all the classic mods and single player options with co-op. Could be a launcher and with Q1, Q2, Q3/Quake Live etc. Blizzard did this for most of their classic games, Stretegy games might be easier to "modernize" but it should still work for Quake games.
I'm actually considering putting alot of money into buying the rights for QL, if the right people are behind it and works in the communities intersts.
Problem is I dont know how large the playerbase for quake could actually be, alot of people used to play quake but they're very old and have families now. Quakes problem was always to attract new players.
Basically my heart wants it but I my brain kinda don't (cause it's risky business wise)
Yea man, and then u got these kinds of people who dont even interact with anybody, they dont even talk about the topic, all they do is holding patronizing monologues whenever they comment, thats some fucked up shit :D
Once the competitive scene dies, the game soon follows. I’ve seen countless games crumble is usually within a couple of years after the scene goes, only the hardcore loves stay.
Besides that I just think arena shooters have never really took off the way games like cs/cod have, people knew about them but would usually rather invest their time into other games. Sad really, quake is such a brilliant game..
