All monitors suck. The ones supposed to be for gaming (faster response) have shitty colors, specially blacks. Example, ive got the xg2401, smooth, but lame colors.

Then the other type of panel have better colors, but shitty response times.

2020 and you still can't have both. Monitor tech is a scam. I haven't enjoyed playing a dark game like Doom 3 since I had my 19inch ViewSonic CRT and watching movies is also a pain in dark scenes.

However, im pretty sure a modern monitor is better than a 60hz one, that must hurt your eyes. Also there's no way im going back to big ass CRT.

Pretty much. There still isn't anything as reactive and as colorful as good old CRT tech.

Probably there will never be in that combo, or at least for 10 years.

CRT+WMO+quake 3 is still the most reactive, smoothest quake experience there's ever been and probably will ever be.

But at least it's nice to have 24 or 27 inches monitors a few inches deep and not weighting 25 lbs.

Microsoft should be set in fire by refusing to re-release a WMO with updated tech.

It's not only microsoft. Any mouse company has the technology to release a 1000 dpi wmo equivalent sensor in a no-nonsense package for a grand total of 20 dollars today.

Is there anyone selling moded WMOs? I have no idea about modern optics but I suppose they work better with higher res. So say get a similarly shaped modern razer and put it inside the WMO body. I would pay for this.

Anyway it's not the shell that made the WMO the beast it was. Personally i've always preferred the logitech shells, and there are various modern mices with similar shape to wmo.

The shape is irrelevant. Many mices have/had a very similar shape, and it can be 3d printed easily anyway.

The mlt04 was the most flawless/reactive sensor there's ever been, according to many that tried it.
It was perfect, which means it didn't have angle correction and other correction bullshits; it had no acceleration until it rached it's speed limit and then it had very low and predictable negative acceleration; it had no drivers, so 0 added bullshit, unlike for example logitech or razer's spaghetti mess drivers.

The only issue is it only had 400 dpi. But that could already been increased few years later by industry standards.

You don't need 15000 dpis, they actually fuck up your aim.

Luckily I bought 3 pairs back then, now they are expensive as fuck.

What I notice is that in tiny movements it doesn't seem too smooth. Like it doesn't pic up the tiny slow movements. Not sure how it is in a modern one.

Hmm, might be that it's skipping pixels at HD resolution; it shouldn't be too much of an issue in common use scenarios, see how it goes

I see a few 27 inch here and there, but overall the pro players use 24-25 inch.

Modern monitors are 16:9 which means you actually have to move your head if it gets too wide. You could sit further away just for gaming, but it kind of defeats the purpose...

I use sizedown in QL so I dont need to move my eyes too much.

I am mostly doing it for work. Don't expect it to ruin my gaming, though. I could always push it a bit farther. Have a 27 1440 at work and think 32 4k would be just fine

I have this one (I literally got it four days ago) and I'm loving it (coming from an XL2420Z, which is a 144Hz TN). I highly recommend an IPS for the colours, and 240+ Hz really works wonders (at least for fps games, I haven't tried racing games for example). See the RTings review of the VG259QM here.

I mean it's a 24,5" monitor, so 1080p is not that big a deal (27" is too large for me)... But yeah a 1440p 24,5" IPS panel at 240 Hz would be the dream :-)

5Will blacks be as vad as the Viewsonic I have? XG2401. The colors just suck. I cant play dark games or watch movies since I moved from CRT. But the "good colors flat monitors" sucked for Quake due input lag.

I've never tried the XG2401, but IPS panels (like the VG259QM) generally have better colours than TN panels (like the XG2401). I'm not an expert whatsoever though, I'm just really enjoying my VG259QM (and the blacks seem fine to me, and clearly better than the ones my XL2420Z offered).

So IPS panels are finally fit for Quake? because back then people here said to best avoid them cause the input lag wasn't as sharp.

How the hell does 280hz feel? I can't feel a difference from 120hz to 144hz.

My ASUS VG279Q is perfectly fine for quake, actually the only real drawback is the resolution. Pick 1440p on 27 inch monitor, 1080p is not "return it" bad level, but it's surely not optimal. Sadly 1440p is literally twice the price for the same monitor but 1080p

27inch is massive. My XG2401 is 24 inch and is big enough. I don't really see the need for a bigger monitor? I already use sizedown one time for QL because it's just too big and I like to have everything on sight without barely moving my eyes. For desktop and applications I could use an extra space I guess, but still, it's a big annoying having to move your eyes around to reach things. It doesn't help that I have fucking eye floaters on one eye.

Dunno how far you sit from your monitor, but I don't need to move my head for the 27inch one (btw, it's the same size/footprint as my old 2233rz - 22 inch 120Hz monitor).

How it can be the same size if its 22 inch vs 27?

I mean the full size of the monitor, not the panel itself. 2233rz got quite the borders around the panel, the new vg279q got almost none. Regardless, I have zero issues to see the whole panel and enjoy the content on it. It's far better vs 22 inch.

Well, my monitor is not far away, it's the usual distance and I can still see the whole screen. All this is personal preference tho, my sweetspot is 27inch, for some it's 24, others 32.

For a good gaming experience you can find some 24-25" 1080p 240hz tn monitors like aoc/acer/ omen x25f i guess, if you want more (1440p, 144+hz, better colors etc) just wait, ips monitors are still more expensive (400-600)

I can spend more as long as is fast and responsive for Quake and the colors are better than my Viewsonic Xg2401.

I would say 240hz tn monitors for quake, but there are some fast 240-280hz ips models at similar price (around 400€, like vg259 or 279qm, acer xb273), check reviews on tftcentral or rtings for more info about colors of the single models. Some 1440p are good but more expensive (600€).

I think things have gotten a lot better since 120hz IPS monitors are available. However, now, I am kind of used to 4K, and a 120hz 4K 27in monitor seems a bit too expensive. But otherwise, tons of decent choice nowadays.

I've played on 120/160hz crt not so long ago and had two lcd monitors to compare. Had each of them at home for a good while, played quake and jk2.

First I got - AOC 24G2U - 144hz ips.
Really enjoyed the colors, but 144hz was not up to the par with crt and blur reduction mode was unusable. It was good enough for any single player game, maybe some multiplayer games where you don't need to move the screen very fast. Ok-ish for quake but clearly worse than crt so I returned it. There are faster ips panels out there.

Acer Nitro xf252q - 240hz tn. Colors are unimpressive, but not unbearable. Had to adjust it manually. I played it at 120hz with motion blur reduction for a while first - for me it's as good as crt at 120hz. You can find the slightest crosstalk if you look for it, but it's just good enough. Now on 240hz blur reduction doesn't make as much of a difference in-game (only colors get worse). Smoothness is slightly better but it doesn't scale up as well as crt. It feels like crt at 160hz, unable to fully take advantage of this refresh rate. I wouldn't settle for anything slower in the future coming from crt, even if it was ips with better colors and I think there is still room for improvement to use full potential of 240hz (320hz must be a gimmick for now).

Besides quake I've played a 3rd person game where there is a lot of very fast camera turning and you want as little blur as possible. second monitor was almost as good as crt for this, good enough for me (only tried 120hz + strobbing), first was just bad, all blurred.

Good blur reduction with little crosstalk is a must to match a crt as not all games will run at 240fps and even then 120hz + blur reduction will have slightly sharper frames (but I don't notice it in quake - in some other games).

I'm not saying this specific monitor is best, one annoying thing is how you can't change brightness with blur reduction on. I just learned that I need really low g2g times and blur reduction to match crt@120hz. Same with 240hz compares to crt@160hz but slightly worse still. Don't take ips with higher g2g times coming from crt.

I'm playing on 240hz without blur reduction right now.
At 240hz I don't see a big difference in q3 between blur reduction on/off. Enabling it makes colors or contrast worse and I can't adjust brightness so I just keep it disabled.
My performance is similar or even the same at 120hz with blur reduction, but 240hz feels better, easier on my eyes.
