Agreed 100%. Overtoad was beating GitzZz online, went to NY for I believe WCG but ended up not being able to play because they couldn't get his PantherXL joystick controller (which he used instead of a mouse) to work on any of the computers. That's when he threw in the towel and ended up not pursuing a professional career.

Ahahaha, fools. The games are interchangable if you take the time, I think that any OSP player will have a very hard time practising and learning to beat ppl like Apheleon, elpajo, gellesak and rat, or fiend...

In the recent GGL tourny, daler and chaoticz did pretty well, but they only beat the "lower" cpm players, when it got to a game against a "pro" cpm player they got beaten.

Out of the OSP players, Daler is probably the best CPM player since he's been playing it awhile.

But still, I think i'm accurate in saying that no current OSP player will be able to beat one of the top 5 CPM players in the world in a 3 map game. I doubt that any of the CPM players will beat any of the top 50 OSP players, but there are so much more OSP players it's not comparable. They are different games and that's that.

I'm sure if ZeRo4 or Cooller spent a year playing CPM, they will be very good, but they can't just play it and be good, and if YOU think that, and you think you're a hardcore osp player, just try and have a game against a well known CPM player and get some frags.

I aint a cpma hater, i played it myself for a long time and enjoyed it, but that was for the movement. I have never considered the aiming to be all that.

Fiend is good at every game he plays. He is sick at CPM, owned QW from what I understand, and has placed very highly (top 10) in a bunch of OSP tournaments, including (I believe) Quakecon 2003.

Well, not to brag or denigrate, I beat Fiend in UT1 Hybrid 2(!). He almost had me tho, and I'm sure he'd have gotten better, sooner.

I've lost to **everybody**, but a player of Fiend's calibur(outside of UT) is a notch in my ammo belt. :-)

In south africa, Qorpse (qw-recent), Lugonn(qw-past)(played kane on a trip to europe, lost in a close game), DeathKnight(qw)

Vio Nectro(q2 - although the q2 scene says everyone would of been 0wned internationally, I didn't play so I don't know, but he was head and shoulders above MOST), m00p aka MonkeyPuke (q2)

and in q3... Deathsbane if he played q3 instead of cs, Viper(top 24 at babbages I believe) if he practised, Undead, Shadowl0rd... don't think anyone else in the q3 scene down here could be "pro", except maybe Azul and Brute, but those guys don't play for shit. Infact most of the guys don't play for shit, so I'll stick with Shadowlord and Undead.

They beat each other regularly, 50/50 I guess, shadow only recently got back into it seriously, he was originally a qw player, best in SA at one point, but he hasn't been playing much, but he could easily go pro if he wanted, basically the same if ph4ntom moved to sweden.

That is correct though, they uploaded 2 demos, maybe shadow wins in the one? I really can't say how they decide what demos get uploaded and which don't.

From what I know, pt4 is equal, ph4ntom wins dm6 more and shadowlord wins ztn more. They both got totally different styles of play, that they compliment each other perfectly, as brothers they had a bad rivalry going for the past 4 years, they had only kissed and made up recently.

Well, it's all relative, ph4ntom has played in three international tournaments. Compare that to any "top" player, who either lives in europe or america (easy to find competition to play against).

And come on... Ph4ntom did not play awesome at ESWC, but he played very well at WCG2002, and even at ESWC, he still beat death in one game, close in another, lost to z4 5 to 4 on pdm6, etc. He played ok, but he said he just didn't have a good tourny, which well, could be true, if he performs shit at the next thing he goes to, then you know he's a one shot wonder, but if he does well, who knows?

Ph4ntom has a better big match temperament. I don't think Shadow will ever beat him in a comp game.

That was an old old reply, the reason I didn't mention Ph4ntom was that everyone knew him and I considered him "pro" as in that level. Shadowlord just needed to play more I think. If he got used to tournaments he would of been amazing, but I don't think you could really say who is better when they are both top of their game.

He's around, probably hanging around in some grave yard dessimating the dead, aint seen him in a year (duh) but I saw him every now and then when I was on irc 24/7. Still had the privilage of playing him in qw (it hurt) And I watch him in q3 once, 150 ping and he had lan aim, madness.

Damn, so happy I stumbled upon this thread... From the SA scene, speaking from Quake/QW days, we had some serious talent I believe. Most of the guys from the original Damage Clan (Started by the legendary doom master, Kl0b) were pro-like players from the earliest days... some names that come to mind - viper, ph4rcyde, mannga, ghostrider, chenome, qorpse, etc. They were from JHB and kings of tdm,ffa & ctf.

On the CPT front we had two of the best duelers in SA. From the Glass Dragon Clan we had Hiro. From Clan Raiden, we had South Africa's finest, Darknight - an unbelievable deathmatch player and virtually unstoppable on DM4 & DM6.

Ask Darknight about what happened when he played his first game on dm4 here in JHB against me on lan (52 - -4, about). People in cape town couldn't believe the demo.

He was a cool dude though and as he got more suited to the (shitty conditions here) we had much much closer games. I lost many games on dm4/dm6 against him, but so did he against me (admittedly, we both had to put up with pcs capable of like 15fps at the time) and we played with basically shit setups.

Btw, ph4ntom AND shadowlord at one time tried to join my qw clan. But I mean, we were too busy smoking and shit and they were kinda serious.

There's a particularly underrated player I played a TDM against. Though I played with a fucking serial mouse with one of my "casual" buddies, Vassago, a decent player, but not quite on the level ofCchenome or the guy I'm referring to, Rifter.

There was also quite a lot cheating in qw play in south africa (i noticed something about that at some lan meets), Baygon and Mag, for instance.

So awesome to hear stories from back in the day. I was a little too young to go to lans and didn't have internet during the quake 1 period, but heard so much about the "old school" quake players that I recognize everyone's name.

It seems because the international scene is so much larger that they don't really have the same tight relationships and stories that the SA community does. Something that is great about growing up where we were and that specific moment in time.

Funny stuff, I was at a lan with baygon, misfit and many other lesser known players. Even with wallhacks and crap, baygon still got his ass handed to him in ffas most of the time.

Of course, he didn't consider any of those wallhacks, changed graphics, etc cheating.

There was another guy in damage clan (but he stopped playing early, when he was like...14), q13, he was basically the best player around when I joined damage clan.

Oh and Vio Nectro and Monkeypuke were kinda crap, well Monkeypuke not as much but Vio Nectro was horribly overrated. Beat them with like 70 handicap in q3 online, with higher ping. They didn't play much longer either.

Viper (was a good buddy of mine, we ALMOST won a warcraft 2 compo against warcraft 2 vets, I joined him because other people didn't and he couldn't find a partner, though I had basically never played warcraft 2 before) won that inaugural creative labs q2 compo here in south africa. So yeah, the q2 scene was kinda...crappy.

Seriously, he pretty much made the other players look kinda pathetic. They played the final on a kinda crap custom map though (no offence to that map designer, given the time constraints and such, but...)

It was kinda neat, he won sli voodoo 2s and stuff. It was pretty neat, I was like 16 or something and celebrated a bit.

Had to explain to my dad that there was nothing else to drink, which is why I smell of alcohol.

List of some underrated/unknown good SA quake/qw players (imo):

T1ger: QW, never played LAN against him, but I'm pretty sure he would've kicked ass. As good or better than anyone I've played 1v1, on any map with any sort of rules.

Paradox: QW/LAN, we were pretty much unbeatable 2v2.

Rifter: This guy was the best player I've played against on LAN, but unfortunately I didn't play much against him, it was TDM with a relatively much worse partner and I was using a serial mouse. We led something like 12 - 0 after barely a minute on dm6 and still lost something lke 26 - 12.

Glaird: Yeah I'd have to say, If Glaird bothered, he'd probably beat you. He was consistently really good on lan and qw but he didn't play much.

Mag: QW (possibly lan) supposedly, but I didn't get to play against him much and when I did his teammate was a known cheater, so that's kind of a hard assessment to make.

Those guys are about as good, and possible or even probably better than Viper (and I was in damage clan with Viper and we played qw/q3 a fair bit, but also later a different clan with glaird and paradox).

I played a fair amount against ph4ntom and shadowlord online too, though at the time I don't think they were quite as good as at their peak and I never played LAN with them, so it's hard to say.

Some other mentions:

Bloodlust: Played and beat sujoy on a trip to the UK iirc, incredible if he plays well.

Vertigo: Consistently quite good.

Q13: The best quake player in damage clan when i joined (I was about 15 or so and he was about 14 or so), but he didn't play much after that.

Annex: Very good on QW particularly, but still beat the majority of SA players on LAN easily. If he plays well, comparable to someone like Viper or Paradox (though very different play styles).

I played a fair amount against ph4ntom and shadowlord online too, though at the time I don't think they were quite as good as at their peak and I never played

in Quake/QW, relative to most of the players I've mentioned I'd actually say I'm overrated quite a bit. I was very inconsistent, though I could play really well at times. I wouldn't really say we had many actual world class players, but there were certainly some good players.

Strangely enough, I was slightly underrated in q3 (imo), though I played with many different names online (but hey, azul/poison/undead, etc too, so), which may explain some of that.

Sorry, just wanted to mention, probably some smack talk there and it was a long time ago, but that game against DK was something like 53-6. Still, the GDC/CT dudes couldn't understand when they tried to review the demo. He is muuuuch better than that score suggests though.

GDC boasted about DK beating smok3r (one of the damage clan members), by like 10-20 frags on dm2 when he went to CT.

At the time I wasn't even near considered one of the top DC members, then DK got here they were like "I guess we'll let the newbie play against him".

Ironically though, DK was the guy that kinda introduced me to wc2 a week or two before the tournament viper and I played together, we were considered the "shittiest" team, but hey, we still reached the final and lost against guys who almost exclusively played wc2.

I could tell in the first 15 seconds something was wrong with Cybernations shitty QW set up on a LAN because I could even rocket jump once, which is weird considering I could rocket jump around the any map no problem for hours huh?

The only reason I kept playing was trying to see if I could fix the shitty set up enough to play and I couldn't.

I played 100s or 1000s of 1 on 1s all around SA and never limited any challengers, I never lost a 1 on 1 game of Quake which is why I quit because at the time I started feeling bored not excited.

I played everyone in your Clan over and over in Cape Town and up in JHB and hung out with many of you as friends, some people came close to taking a game and I could of lost some close games but I never did.

There's a reason why people go on about 1 replay right, weird considering I usually played 5+ games minimum with anyone who wanted to play, they were the ones who tapped out not me.

Nobody beat me before I retired in 1 on 1 excluding a few games with issues(games that were restarted and not full games), I more than likely put you into negatives on DM4 because it's a stupid map once you have control and DM6 gets boring because of disengage to heal/armor.

Prove me wrong, post that game then post 1 other game we played, it would be pretty obvious to anyone not braindead.

The way I played sometimes I was down 2 - 4 kills at the start while learning the dudes play style then always overtook them.

I was looking for a video of a quake player friend for his wedding and saw this post and decided in the end to reply because your comments are so inaccurate and delusional.

Your best player was probably Viper(German one) because of his erratic play making it difficult to control him because he moved around like no one else I've ever seen while still being able to aim really well.

Other DC players were all good to very good but never got a win.

I even played a bunch of them 3 on 1 in DOOM 2 and they lost too lol.

Was a lot of fun and kind of spoiled by lying about it dude, the fact you even had to try counter the other guys post is kind of sad, everyone in the quake community including our local websites would answer different to you.

I also didn't just play Quake, pretty much any multiplayer game at the time, including Duke3d, heresy in the Quake world!

Hope you are doing well though, I don't game much atm, but I've played quite a few FPS since Quake and I can still aim pretty well surprisingly so come 1 vs 1 bro :)

Oh yeah, the best QW player I played against in SA was T1ger (from CT), we had some great games.

In a qw competition here (because well, quake>q3) me and one of my clan members (paradox, incredibly good player) played against him and lugonn in a semi-final.

I think lugonn was very out of practice at the time though, as his performance was somewhat average, but playing t1ger 1on1 was always very interesting.

Then we had to put up with bots and wallhacking (baygon) in a final.

Yeah I didn't even bother to play there, took a few minutes to notice that a guy with a 150 ping shouldn't be able to shoot rockets at you when he's not even facing you.

Don't want to say Mag also cheated, since I never played lan with him, but baygon pretty much always cheated

For me the only real pro players are tresh, fatality, Z4 and some Korean Star Craft players.

Notice the way we say "pro" and not pro. We just mean internationally acknowledged as good, a top top dude would be ZeRo4, Cooller, fox, zamuz, etc, a top, but not so top, would be like socrates, daler, lexer, and then a top, but low top, would be death, phantom, reef, akiles, etc

My opinions are my opinions, me saying that "OMG ZeRo4 is da RULEZZ!!" was not the point of my post, what was the point of the post was to explain that when we say pro, we don't mean earning money, we mean a certain grade of internationally recognised players. The players I picked in the 3 grades within that were based on my own thoughts.

I thought lexer did pretty shit at qcon2003, while fox and z4muz did really well, and even if I was wrong in my assessment of putting fox and z4muz above lexer, well then I would only move fox and z4muz down, the top 3 is (and I will not change this opinion) ZeRo4, Cooller, Unkind(barely).

The people who are considered pro are the guys who have the competetive edge that pushes them to goto all the events and strive to win, others dont have that competetive motivation, i know players who can just pickup the game after months out and play superb and you just know if they were to even put in half the effort and time these "Pro" players do they would kick their arses.

That is such bullshit, how is it that ppl who don't prac at all are supposed to be "better" than ppl who prac and are better gamewise.

Training, patience and persistance are skills as well.

What about Jok3r? (french lad) - he freakin rocked, I think he played one LAN tourney but mostly just played online. He used to ping 90/100 on the UK servers and still own every UK player - I once watched him defeat Blokey on ZTN somethin like 20-5. Jock3r could have been world top 10 IMO. Does anyone know if he still plays? I think he originaly played for DC (domonic core) and later BX (who?).
I used to get frustrated by his silly PG and LG aim with such a shabby ping :)

Heh, jock3r was indeed one of the most talented player I've played with. Sometimes he would set his mouseaccel to high values just for the kick of trying to hit 360+rail combos (which he did hit.) ;P

He just never took the game seriously, that's why he never got interested in big events.

I still have Jock3rs q3config which I begged him for after a few heavy defeats - I was convinced there was some secret settings that made him aim so well but as expected I was disapointed to find a normal config... maybe it was the 10 sens and 3 accel?

But I can remember alot from it. He had crosshair 1 at size 24 in cyan, fov 110, drawgun 1, overbrightbits 0 with high gamma. Oh, and sens 10 accel 3 as I've mentioned.

judging people on online performance is a waste of time in my opinion. Placing well at non-prize tourneys isn't anything to boast about, a lot of the 'better' players only go to money/prize tourneys and as a consequence these lesser tourneys aren't a good judge of skill/ability. Similarly, playing online involves too many random factors: I've beaten some decent players online, but it's all irrelevant as LAN is what matters.

anyway, anyone who saw kash play on quakeshit with his online "lan" ping knows what he would've done at an actual lan. trust me, you've never seen anyone aim like he did with a <10ms cl_maxpackets 100 ping. It was even crazier when he played cpma there. I saw him score 140 in a 7 round match with a 57% shaft and a 70% rail.
