ESR - Doom3 multiplayer - officially death... or not?

Few of us played for about 5-6 months on and off in 2016 in the run up to quake champs initial beta.

I got loads of demos from it, happy to upload them if someone can point me to some free storage for about 20-30 gig across 30 ish files.

Not sure the game will ever die as you'll always find some people who will play it for Nostalgia. Its just about getting everyone realigned at the same time, most of the players who would be interested are pretty good at the game and might not want to give a bad representation of themselves as it does take time to re-calibrate your brain to playing it due to the clunky engine and they might not think its worth it.

Every gamer is nostalgic about games they dumped years into, but I don't know of a single competitive gamer who thinks its fun to get owned and play at a shadow of what they could do without the rust and it just depends on whether they will.

Thanx for your reply. Well it happens often that during the week not a single soul join the game so if not dead, sure isn't far from it. Sorry about demos but I can't help, maybe you can upload some match up youtube? That sure will be nice and more fast I think. Anyway, all you say is true also competitive players goes where there is a worth presence of money, which is comprehensible. Strange fact that D3 multiplayer is buried but games like quakeworld, Doom 2, q2 or q4 (just to mention a few) are still "played" at least in a competitive way

I think it's due the fact that D3 was way slower than any of these previous id software fps. The single player was amazing, the coop would have been amazing if it had it, really cool atmosphere, but ffa was too slow comming from D2/any Quakes. It was cool to fuck around with the flashlight and hide in the dark, but overall it was lightyears behind Q3 as far as FFA, TDM, duel, etc, so Q3 was still big back then. Hell Q3 made a comeback after Q4's flop.

The limitations of d3 multiplayer are few maps and few game modes, apart from that, is a good combination of realistic fps and arena fps if you think about it. Weapons do a lot of dmg so you are not really in trouble when miss armor/megahealth, fist weapon actually do dmg + steal weapon (so basic so good). Some hate reload but in d3 works, doesn't feel the weight of doing so. I can go on with pros but I stop here... even new generations can relate to it, just need to be rediscovered

You are correct.

The shadow graphics and id Tech 4 stuff was the cool thing behind this.

People said Carmack took it to the next level for real when Doom 3 came out and it scared the shit out of ppl to play like any classic doom.

But from multiplayer waaaaaaaaaay slower than Doom2.

Doom2 is faster paced in many ways than even Quake World and this shit was slower than Quake 3 base game.

Original Doom 3, if it was BFG I would have written. Anyway BFG multiplayer is not optimized so avoid it but nice fact that there is an official rank system for every game mode/map inside the game

Original, BFG was pretty unplayable I think as the way the servers were done, I think it was something shit like peer 2 peer, games were like 200+ ping, shame.

You can get decent games on the original doom 3, there are a few servers in Europe, New York, West Coast. Just not many if any players....

I used to play Doom 3 every now and then up until 2011/2012 or so. At that point the game was pretty much completely dead so yeah.

Loved, absolutely loved LMS coop. Those were they days. That was before L4D was a thing. Not that it's the same but it's the closest thing I can think of

I used to play doom 3 MP back in the day, it was pretty interesting. What I always thought was cool was the per pixel hit detection, no more bullshit hitboxes but I guess this made the netcode extra shit or something? Not sure why games don't use this today.
