Like I said qtracker takes like 3 minutes for the servers to show up which is tedius.

Maybe last release was in 2014 but it's pretty much complete, far more feature-rich most other browsers and it just works. Only GUI could use a revamp, update to gtk 3. As long as you are on linux. There's been some fixes since then, sent a few myself, but apparently nobody bothered to make a release.

I don't know about trustuing a random .exe. Can you trust a random github repo that has a single developer? If there was something malicious it could in the code, in plain sight and nobody would notice. If you want to build it yourself on windows and can't figure it out, then your best bet is contacting the guy who wrote it.

I've been going through the same thing with qtracker, and you can mostly fix it by going to the quake 3 server list here: https://www.qtracker.com/server_lists.php
and manually importing it to a new folder under quake 3 in qtracker.
The best alternative I've found is game tracker. I had to replace the id master server it comes with with ioquakes, but it works after that. You can also just import the qtracker server list into it.

Click on a game, go to the folder menu > new > folder, the right click the folder that was just made and import that server list into it. It'll look like this.
idk how updated the qtracker list is but it has all the servers I play on, good enough.

Its not ordered by type of mod etc. It's just the huge list of servers, also doesnt tell you the country, doesnt look like pic related.

However it cannot pull the server list from the id master server (I guess now gone). A quick look at the code suggests I may have a newer version than the last release which adds a SupportedGames.xml file which would allow you to specify a different master server (I was enabling support for more q3 derived games I believe).

Perhaps worth me digging that up and updating it to point at say master.ioquake3.org:27950 if someone were likely to use it ?

I would most definitely use a better alternative to qtracker.

I’ll take a look at whether it builds using modern tools tomorrow - it should do without too much hassle I expect, and if so will confirm it’s as simple as I think to repoint the master server, and look into the possibility of putting a new build together

After a few trivial fixes, I can compile the latest codebase, and am able to reconfigure it to query the ioquake3.org master server which seems to have the majority of servers.

There's a few gotcha's that mean I wouldn't want to release the binary I have right now although it's definitely fundamentally working for q3. A few hours more on it should get a binary I could consider releasing though. Perhaps I'll find that time at some point next week.

I had considered that as an option as I think it's an option for MAXBrowse (unlike for q4max itself), but it's also more work.

An .exe from AnthonyJ ain't just some random .exe, it is the .exe you need.

FWIW, I've just confirmed that I cannot simply re-licence it to GPL since I've used a 3rd party component in the GUI (the menubar + toolbar), that while it's quite a liberal licence, is not considered GPL compatible (CPOL - it contains a clause for "no illegal or immoral uses", which is a restriction GPL says cannot be placed).

So MAXBrowse will never be GPL'd in it's current form. Whether I release it under some other "open" licence that does work or strip out out that component I'm not sure. Like I said, open source is more work.

Im interested in MAXBrowser for a proper Q3 server finding experience. As it stands there is no such software anymore. The ones I've tried aren't working optimally.
