It's visual and you can save your settings to an INI file which you can import on other computers or fresh installs. It's not necessarily a better tool, since there's so many that do similar things now, but maybe you'll like it more.

I've heard Windows 10 does that from time to time.

If you have it on your computer with your saved INI, it won't let those things to be enabled. If they do somehow get forced, it won't give any alerts (because it's not a program you install) but you can open it and you will see the option switched. If anything else, sometimes you have to get a new version.

For me it's always been a set and forget deal. I might be a little outdated now because I haven't had to use it, or Win10, for quite a while now.

I'm only upgrading because RE8 and some other games now require me to use Windows 10 because of Direct x 12 support.

This can be said about almost all of the free open source stuff too - who really check the source? Especially given that if the programmer is smart he can kinda hide among the other stuff the malicious code so if someone quickly check the source - most likely he will not spot anything wrong.

Modifying your system ALWAYS comes at a risk when you use stuff made from other people, it's up to you if you trust them or not.

Saying all that, you are completely right: closed source + private company + "free" doesn't mix together except in cases where it can lead to purchasing something else or "pro" version of the free stuff. I would strictly avoid that one and stick to open source enthusiasts solutions.

We are talking about a program that modifies your operating system deeply and certainly requires root privileges to do so.

I would be very wary running any - open source or not - program that's not in my distro repo (ie popular and well vetted) with root privileges.

For closed source programs - at least if I paid for it, I can sue the producer if something goes terribly wrong. I paid for windows and their telemetry. Companies regularly pay compensations for data leaks, even without taking it to court.
