Well long story short, I can't access my old steam account, so I have a second account that I play on, so some butthurt admin came on while I was playing and he's like "You're fake" etc then after the game he perma banned me and I was like wtf? - I've been playing on those servers for years, regardless. So yeah, that's about it really.

another prime example is that dude funkusmunkus, there is nothing his detecitve eye will miss, he will google you, he will check ur steam account and do all kinds of reasearch, if your account is private.. that will break his heart

In a game without maintained anticheat, best cheat protection is trust and community building. Go check any healthy server on q3 or any other old game nowadays - it's the same. Maybe your memories are skewed because nobody cares about noobs who just installed the game. If someone with new account/fake nick comes and destroys everyone it's a different matter.

You want anonymity and no consequences? Go play one of these huge meat grinder online games. No questions asked, you may also get banned without a chance to appeal. If this is your thing.

my memory is very sharp on this matter as this was the only game i played when i was younger, i think its the people that are left just are snarky and old..

you should never balance the game around cheaters.

I totally agree with your statement. Majority of gamers now days are too sensitive when something in-game doesn't go their way. So they resort to name calling, banning, looking up your Facebook profile and who knows what else. Checking your LOLCA stats and ELO.

And like you said in the old days you bought the game, install, set nickname, join server and nobody really questioned you as to who you are or what. They just played the game and have fun.

Quake Live servers are supervised by Valve Anti Cheat. Still dont get it why people think QL has no anti cheat.

I can't say I've noticed anyone cheating in a hundred of hours I put into it recently, but I'm not very attentive to it and rarely spec others. At least not aimboting, with wh it's really hard to tell.

I spent the last few months of 2020 playing TF2 extensively. There aren't that many REAL players. At least 90% of them are idling in some kind of item-focused servers or whatever. Check it out for yourself

exact thing happened to me,
i only have one ql account since forever, but only play ca once every few months.

naa comes in harrassing me to get my real account and then bans me for a month or something.

now i can't play on the servers either way because they put a 100game minimum to join, and there are no other active servers...

One can prevent them completely with firewall rules and good hosting, but you need learn a lot. Turns out hosting game servers is neither easy nor cheap. Quite a few ppl who obtained a profession out of hosting community servers and learning to improve it.

Firewall setting wouldnt help at all because DR-DOS. Also good hosting wouldnt help at all as well when you have enough power :)

He may run out of his pocket money to buy enough power, and then you can try to buy even more on your side - this is where "it's not cheap" part comes into play.
I've seen many dos attempts mitigated with good enough firewall configuration (and enough bandwidth to hold it obviously). Sure someone can come up with something better, but 99% it's some clueless guy who's just mad. And this is in q3 and similar. Dunno about ql but I'd hope they improved protocol to be harder to spoof or use reflection.

If it's so impossible to prevent dos then how did bethesda's servers run for so many years? Or any service on the internet? Answer - it's not free to execute successful attack and service provider can make it even more expensive.
