A bit disappointing that it's "only" a re-release of Quake 1 with some improvements (but at the core, the same exact game), but at least it's good to see something happening around Quake. Hopefully this is only the first step and they plan to work on a fully new Quake game in the future.

I played the first levels of the new episode, Dimension of the Machine, and they are impressive visually..

no way they invested in this modernised port with free content without a new game in the future to sell.

As long as Quake is a Bethesda / Microsoft IP I don't think there is any hope in a good game.

Best possible scenario would be if somehow the IP get in the hands of another team who does have some affinity with the Quake IP.

also to answer your question, the new episode loads in Quakespasm, but it is buggy since the mod code diverges from current protocol. probably it will be fixed in the future.

Pretty disappointing, especially the multiplayer. Zero options, no brightskins. No maps, no real matchmaking, no antilag. Nothing from quakeworld that we had 10 years ago is included?

of course none of that is included, because it's outside of the scope for this project. this is a revamp on the vanilla Quake game, probably leading to a singleplayer focused reboot.

if you want QuakeWorld, just get nQuake and play it.. there's nothing to be disappointed about.

I just watched the trailer. Apart from 4 player coop, it doesn't appear to have anything going for it.

It says it's a free upgrade for everyone who already owns the game, so... it has to be a prelude to the actual thing. You know, the reboot.

Have you tried adding your cd key on steam ? It might work, you never know.

Also during QuakeCon 2020, Quake was given for free on the Bethesda Launcher, if you did pick it up then, it's also been updated to the current version.

Oh yeah, I have that, I've installed it and it has the new version, cool! And it's Steam-free, but still pings bethesda.net, obviously.

Models may be slightly nicer (ok, shamblers are 1000x better), but the engine itself... It's Vulkan, so that's awesome, and appears to have stuff avaialble through the console that can't be enabled through settings menu (you know, like r_wateralpha, cl_engineFPS 250), and I like how it comes with unfiltered textures by default, for nice old school effect. But mouse smoothing "off" seems to be still smoothing, the "HD HUD" is anything but HD and has no ammo bar, I see no options to bind weapons to keys, stuff like that. Not modernized enough :)

Fortunately, FTE QW (https://fte.triptohell.info/downloads) is already working on support for the re-release, and that port is tight. Currently the only obvious problem is displaying message identifiers instead of actual messages (stuff like "$QC_SECRET_FOUND" instead of the message/translation), but otherwise already playable :) (They say fragging Shub in co-op is currently broken, not sure if I care ;))

I'll check out the new episode tomorrow!

Update; FTE QW build 6042 now supports rerelease messages, map fog, earthquakes, falling bridges, all just work just like in the kex engine.

So far the only issue I found was a teleporter that's flying across the map (Sandy's Room, mge1m3) instead of sitting in its place. It can actually squish you if you stand in the right (or wrong) place :)

Last time they made a Doom (1993, not 2016) port for modern consoles, made it online-only of course, and hired some fuckers like Digital Foundry (or someone equally unethical, I pushed it out of my memory already) to interview "developers" who claimed it was a huge challenge. Doom, the game random people port to calculators, microcontrollers, text terminals... And people bought that. They will buy a re-release of Quake, too.

I think it's Quake, not QuakeWorld? Aka, unplayable online. But they never advertised online play, instead the trailer has split-screen multiplayer on the consoles, that should be fine :)

Fingers crossed the netcode wasn't done by Saber/Syncerror and is adapted from QC... Nah could't be. No way.

That's like the single thing QC netcode has going for it, the lag compensation somewhat works for very high pings.

But the trade-off is horrible.
Watched a Rapha stream lately? He complains nonstop about netcode causing weird things, most prominent hitscan not registering, or registering way too hard, projectiles not registering, or in the wrong places, SG doing randomly no dmg or insane dmg.

He's not the only one by far, but he articulates it in the most detail what is wrong and I don't doubt it for a second, if anyone knows best and is factual, it's Rapha.

Hell you could see him complain so much this finals, pobably one of the reasons for his underwhelming performance was the complaining about netcode, relying on hits correctly registering and losing focus when they didn't.

The QC netcode is a total mess. The only thing it has going is with 100+ ping vs low ping, it is somewhat playable and competitive.

Also I suspect bugs that were never fixed, at least with the server code as they tend to deteriorate over time.

To me it feels like a slightly better version of netquake that's all (Yes I'm old enough to remember lol). Like netquake -50 ms. Whatever it is it must be pretty conservative.

Not really.

1. It's done really tastefully, not your normal "remaster". You barely notice there are higher polygon models. It's high resolution but they took care to preserve a lot of the "pixelation" (square particles and stuff). No community engines/mods did that, in FTEQW there's no preset like that (I hope they will make one!), they all add shiny particle effects that look stupid (like nails have yellow or green smoke that drops down from gravity, wtf), none of that shit in the rerelease, and it's awesome (or disappointing if you're Anonymous).

2. There is a completely new official episode made for the anniversary. And it's not bad.

3. It's a free update for anyone who had Quake on some digital platform. Earlier in the thread I found out I had it in BNL, completely for free - anyone who used BNL (for example for playing QC) during last year's QuakeCon had it given to them for free, and this year it received the rerelease. Even console peasants shouldn't complain (they got a neat retro game they never played before, with split screen co-op, motion control and stuff, for $10), but PCMR was taken especially good care of.

So during lets talk Quake, there wasn't any hint on future quake plans ?

I so wish for quake 5 which would be continuation of either quake 1 or quake 2/4 storyline...

I think it's beter there was no talk about it here right now.. just give it some more years and the people from Champions moved on to other projects and retirement... It's the only way for Quake to ever become somewhat of a success.

Quake one is still the best retro fps, especially with all the custom content available, I actually wondered why they did not update the steam version with quakespasm and community highres graphics as well as the music (that was also missing on steam) ...
but this new version basically copy pasting community content, adding original music as ogg and steam achievments makes sense as well ...
now you actually have a good title that is getting played again, because the original version would only be played by some people who would also play dos games with resolution 320x400 or something ... now the average joe can play it with nice graphics, I am sure a lot of people are going to take it up, definitely a lot of people who have been around back then and also other people who are into fps

I played a bit multiplayer, because I liked the idea of the playing the edge (q2dm1), but it is the old netquake physics and the netcode is bad ... also the engine sometimes fucks up (cause it is not idtech, something completely different) ... setting movement keys is not really working, there is a bug there, try setting wasd to esdf ... you will have overlap for the back key, and then you retry to reset D key it will always reset to S ... same for other keys ... it always resets to the key that was there solely before, I fiddled around a bit and got it working still ... also you cannot set weapon keys, bind command with +impulse does not work either ... and also you cannot play mods like arcane dimensions, etc., they should at least add another game to that version with quakespasm, community graphics, so it is compatible to all the community content out there ... basically this closed content version is only good for single player newbs who are restricted to the bethesda content prison ... good enough for attracting new players to the game, but incompatibility with community content is a kind of sacrilege

Since I'm starting it without the BNet launcher, the Multiplayer button does nothing ;)

I play RDFG, no issues. You can remove old bindings by pressing the previous key, or clear up by pressing Q, or even go to console and unbind, we're Quakers ffs ;)

Also it's impulse, not +impulse. bind t impulse 7, bind f10 quit, everything works as expected. It's stupid there's no UI for binding weapons, but it's a console port, they expect you to use the weapon wheel... (Which works awful with mouse, compared to Doom 2016's weapon wheel, small difference, the indicator moving around instead of snapping is all they needed to do to make it usable!)

It's not bugged (not counting the "focus" bug affecting all menus), it's actually more predictable than other ports' key binding menu, those console peasants put some thought into it, it just caught us by surprise at first ;)

No one forces us to use the weapon wheel, I only tested it for a second, before binding weapons to buttons... which needs to be done via console/configs, which is fine with me, but unacceptable for noobs.

Also, there's a "switchweapon" command that switches between several weapons. So I did:
bind mouse_misc2 switchweapon 1 0
and the front thumb button switches from other weapons to SSG, but then switches between SSG and SG. (Yes, 0=SG, 7=axe, while impulse has 1=axe 2=SG, why do those have separate lists is beyond me, also for bonus cringe, try switchweapon 8 - even they made an off-by-one error and thought weapon numbers are 1-8, not 0-7)

So this is kind of better than ezQuake's "impulse 8 5 4" which will always pick first weapon with ammo from the list. I like the kex engine's switchweapon approach for normal SP. In QW I just have alias +rl bound to mouse1, in which case ezQuake does exactly what's needed :)

ah, yes, the "multiswitch" commands, I somehow never used them in QW, but it prolly would make sense

you can unbind there any leftover binds. other useful commands:

seta g_showintromovie "0" - skips intros
seta r_gpuCulling "0" - better performance, no more framedrops

Works fine on Fedora, WINE 6.13 staging (using Bethesda.net Launcher version, no Steam DRM).

Since you're trying the Steam version through Proton, you will need to change Proton version used for this game to Proton Experimental.

And as mentioned, the new release (new id1/pak0.pak with new models, as well as the new expansion pack) works in fteqw64, but it can't easily be made to look the same (it's easy to make it look super-original, or super-flashy, but the new Quake release is a very tasteful middle-ground). Maybe they will add a "rerelease" preset with time, to use appropriate lighting, SSAO etc. with faithful weapon trails, explosions etc. That would be the best way to play this, not only on Linux :)

I cannot point my finger at what bothers me with Eternal. I like 2016, definitely a step in the right direction for id.

yeah, it didn't attract me either like the 2016 game, so I didn't buy it yet.
I'm not a fan of Serious Sam battle arenas with waves of monsters and I think Eternal overused these. also the HUD and special effects are too colorfoul and arcadey perhaps? these things are a matter of taste and perspective though.

anyway, I will try it eventually, but right now there's too much content for classic Doom/Quake games that I enjoy more.

I disagree, 2016 had lots and lots of the "nests" you absolutely had to take down during the campaign. Eternal has barely any of those hordes on the main path, just your usual room cleaning. Most of actual horde stuff is optional (empyrean keys/slayer challenges/whatever). At least in theory, we'll get to that :)

I hate Eternal because:

- it starts with an unskippable movie. First impressions - game ruined! 2016's beginning was the best thing since Manic Miner, absolute perfection. Reviewers mentioned it, players sprayed cum everywhere - id Software's reaction? Let's get rid of that shit and play them a movie instead. It cost us a fraction compared to perfecting 2016's beginning, but hey, money spent, so make players suffer through all of it, every time.

- there's more parkour than shooting, executed super non-doom-like (Doom used to be fast, here you're slow and collect dash recharges, have a special button for grabbing idiotic special walls and if you think you can make a jump to skip the intended path, you're wrong - there's an invisible wall mid-air to stop you)

- half the weapons have special keys, can't be switched to with mouse wheel/weapon wheel, for mouse+keyboard user you end up not using half of them because you can't be arsed to remember 70 bindings ;)

- there's a fucking hub world! Not your normal Doom/Commander Keen world map that you advance to get to new levels. Not your Quake slipgate hub to enter long-ass episodes. A literal Mario hub world to teleport to random one-map missions.

- you spend hours unlocking shit by collecting shit, then taking the shit to your shit^Wship, finding locked shit, waiting 10 seconds for the same animation to play twice (and you've seen it a 100 times already) before you can go and watch another animation you've seen 50 times before. After all that, you get a token you can spend in the normal menu. WTF.

2016 had a lot of secrets and collectibles as well as mission challenges, and it already nudged you into finding/fulfilling all of that. I have a friend who stopped playing it very quickly because he felt constantly pushed into collecting shit instead of shooting demons. Eternal is like that but 10x worse, now you're doing chores on maps... just to do more chores in the hub world.

It's basically netquake, it will never be smooth online (that's why QW was released late 1996 to be _the_ online Quake, while netquake was and is awesome on LAN).

But split screen on a console is another story, there you actually want netquake and not QW. So it's not a bad thing for this release. It's a single player / local co-op game. Perfectly justified decision.

(Not to mention you play Q4, isn't that played on 25 FPS servers? You should try QW!)
