Slay the Spire -- Easy to learn, extremely difficult to master. I have hundreds of hours in the game already and still learning new things. It's a game you can pick up and play for a few mins at a time, or sit and play for hours straight. Plus, so many amazing community mods.
fallen empire: legions. it was a shortlived browser game that mimicked the tribes movement and ctf gameplay. it had many flaws but one thing that it had over tribes is increased jetpack air control at slower speeds, so you could dodge more and make people miss their chaingun or midair rockets and then hit your own shots. it felt amazing. sadly they got rid of the increased air control in the same patch where they nerfed the laser rifle. ever since then it's had the same feedback loop of float in the air and chain, and groundpound when they land, which is why tribes games and their clones are so boring to play in the modern era where everyone has good internet.
WOW (the game).
At level 31 when I first realized how gigantic the game really was, only to be blown away even more once I hit level 90(was max level) how insanely huge the game was. Exploring, storyline, collecting shit you dont need, big dick dps maxxxing, try-hard raids, etc.
What was the expansion with level cap 90? Cataclysm?
The biggest flaw of WoW is that it doesn't get bigger each expansion.
You get a new island and rest of the game becomes irrelevant.
Mist of Pandaria was mam lvl90.
If Blizzard would keep the retail content from the previous expansions active the game would be insane. The possible problem would be many thing in the questlines is based on farming stuff with vast amount of other players. Wouldn't work when people are focusing on retail version. It would be awesome if they tweaked it somehow though.
Yeah, the whole game would require a complete redesign but then again... People no longer play MMOs to experience whole new worlds, get immersed and run around with other human beings.
Most of it is min-maxing, grinding the most optimal way and just rush to the end.
RuneScape > WoW ;-)
Suprisingly the best game I played in last few years was the newer Bethesda Prey. Just better than I thought it would be.
Recomend to anybody who liked System Shock / BioShock / Deus Ex games.
Just has really tight engine, atmosphere, level design. gameplay. Cant knock it.
Protip so you dont struggle early game as I did:
-You can unload ammo from guns u find on ground.
-All powers (psychoshock etc) freeze time, so long as you hold the button down. This means you can queue up several attacks against bigger enemies in a split second.
I second your thoughts here. I played this game back when it came out. Played it through once and was impressed but ultimately dismissed it as essentially a SS2 re-hash, with some marginal changes, and a banal story. However, I think this is wrong now. I can't be bothered getting into the details as it's midnight but it makes some genuine, thoughtful innovations in design. And the game is beautifully optimised - I think it uses some iteration of the Cry engine.
free games ... that fad became old fast somehow ... nowadays I dont feel anymore like logging in to catch a free game ... because I dont gonna play it anyway ... the mind adapted it seems
Gothic 1
It's insane how big the world feels even though it's really small.
Great feeling of adventure in an alien environment.
Endgame is pretty poopy but it's still a must play.
Bloodborne, such a ridiclously well made game, the art, gameplay, music and general feel, everything comes together perfectly. Also, the Gothic horror meets Lovecraft world is cool and pretty unique.
i dont think there will ever be another quake, progaming world scene cant start twice. the search i think you are doing cant be made or limited to the gaming industry.
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
Should not have been possible to design such a game in 93.
Just the sheer fact that the meta is still relevant and stimulating nearly 30 years on. And that's for a scene which has been hammering competitive gaming for 30 years over BILLIONS of matches.
Hardest opposition in the genre.
Quake III Arena.
Ultra polished multiplayer shooter out of the box, again with hardest opposition in genre and a strong meta. Lovely graphics. Sounds, lot of attention to detail, impressive A.I.
Honorable mentions.
Doom 3:Graphics and technology.
Crysis:Outside Terrains.
Unreal Engine 4/5: Tim Sweeney = Legitimate Genius.
Going back further:
Ridge Racer Arcade and the old Sega AM2 stuff in the arcades, VF, Daytona, House of the Dead 2 etc.
Oh GTA 5, is an amazing piece of work too.
Just the whole ecosystem in general. Insane amount of work.
From time to time there are benchmark games. I like tech/graphics more than games. Only really cared about FPS, FIGHTING DRIVING.
- Command & Conquer, this game basically started the fps craze back in the day
- Diablo started the Action RPG craze, already had speech and nice atmosphere
- Hearthstone, seems to be still the best card game out there, but its p2w, so I only login in winter months to check a bit some new abilitieis and play a bit, but its always fun, but I dont expose myself too much, because at some point you will have to invest (lots of) money into it
- Donkey Kong Country graphics have been ground breaking at the time, and for me this is the best 2D jump n run, better than mario
- Super Metroid, one of its kind, great atmoshphere music and graphics, great abilities of Samus that just work well together
Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which
blog platform are you using for this site? I'm getting tired of Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform.
I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

I still play DX about once a year. It continues to be a wonderfully entertaining experiment in a kind of marriage of the FPS/RPG hybrid and open-world/sandbox genres, while maintaining a coherent and compelling story. Although the narrative itself is pretty ragged, at a granular level the writing is absolutely on point. I mean these guys were woke on the China question.
I think the older games impressed me more, because back then computer technology made bigger leaps and as a kid I was easier to impress anyway.
Magic Carpet, the gameplay mixture of mana resources and Shooter was cool, massive number of spells to play with, spells could modify the landscape, the 3d effect of water and so on were way ahead of their time (1994): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne7RdQiKRnQ
Descent, first true 3d game (yes, it was released in 1995 before Quake 1, deal with it), after being used to only 2.5d Doom it was a complete mindfuck to move through complex maps with 6 degrees of freedom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuMBYZrcQfU
Zelda on the SNES (A Link to the past) and GameBoy (Link's Awakening), those are just beautiful games.
