Do not forget to vid_restart if you made changes in game to the graphics.


Replace XXX with appropriate resolution. Or dig further into quake III configs and look under the _R settings.

I had an issue recently on nvidia rtx 2060 where if I selected full-screen mode in game the colors were all washed out. If I had full screen windowed, it was fine.

I'm pretty sure the answer is somewhere within the realm of what I pointed out. These sorta niggles are usually something you need to be siting there in person to resolve, unless I'm forgetting something obvious which is possible given most people here haven't touched a quake 3 config file in years.

These resolution tips did not help but I kept on messing with ingame options and I managed to get it working smoothly. I'm not sure but I think Color depth 16 bit did the job. Although, when I alt tab the game and then get back to fullscreen the matrix comes back. It's quite playable now and I don't want to dig further, let's consider the case to be resolved.

Asking for tech support on ESR is like asking for financial advice in a homeless shelter. I'd recommend just joining one of the many q3a discord servers and asking there.

To fix the issue, my guess is you are running the normal quake3.exe from gog, steam, or a cd install. You should probably flip over to q3e or ioq3 and just try different renderer options. Q3e even has a vulkan option right out of the box that works well.

Another thought would be to check the compatibility options for running the game.

Only a guess, but it is likely related to video drivers or the renderer dll used by your version of the game and some level of incompatibility. Newer ports of the game have much better compatibility with newer systems.

It didn't visit my mind that there are q3 discord servers out there. I come to conclusion that ESR is the only Quake community I've ever known, somehow.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, maybe if some day I find myself fazed, I'll come to your tips but for now I'm good. And I didn't know about these new Quake 3 modifications, there is a chance I might try them out :)
