I guess you're scared about drivers for Windows 7 which you insist on, but you can make Windows 10 not phone home, install Classic Shell/Open Shell for normal menu and basically have Windows 7 UI, but on system which supports NVMes our of the box ;)

Just use Win 10 AME. Its win10 without all the malware and it doesnt communicate with MS in any way (no product activation, no updates). It ends up being exactly like win 7.
For 1500 euro just build around 5800x3D and either 3070 or RX 6700. AM4 is cheap now and even though the platform wont offer any upgrade options in the future, its still a good deal.

Throw the mobo and cpu all away, save a load of money and do this.

Go with AM4 B450 or 550 mobo. (preferably 550 with PCIE4)
Get a 5900x for longevity (Get second hand CPU for about £250)

That base setup can be had for not much money and will give you a ton of power for YEARS.

Don't waste your time with a 2060. Its an entry level RT card.
12gb model is fools gold.

If you want nvidia get a second hand 3060Ti and then sell it in about 8 months time and see what you can get for the money.
Radeon 6650/6700xt and up a model or two is worth a look too, ray tracing seems to be the anticlimax I somewhat predicted.

That setup pretty much puts you on the limit of what you can do for sane money while getting something good.

win 10 better than win11?

Well it's more understood. People know how to shut it up so it doesn't phone home, uninstall all the adware, as well as bring back the excellent Windows 7 start menu experience with just a few clicks. And most stuff you can do through your favorite control panel (which you can just have as a menu in classic shell's start) and not touch their tablet UI.

Windows 11 insists on "securing" your computer, which is kind of scary if you think about it (if you want Windows 7 for something, there's high chance you can make it work in 10, but if it's some arcane hardware that needs BIOS or strange low level drivers not blessed by Microsoft - good luck getting it to work on 11). And it has really awful inconsistent UI (more inconsistent than 10!), that will quickly make you want to throw the computer away if you're coming from 7 :)

At the same time, there's nothing that works in 11 but doesn't in 10. Only thing I've heard people recommending 11 for is HiDPI HDR (definitely not our use case), and for like 2 weeks there was a panic with hybrid CPUs before it turned out Microsoft simply withheld patches for Windows 10 to make early adopters update to 11 ;)

why not? You have couch gaming and long life support for at least 5 years or more and games do get optimized for consoles, you can play the AAA titles there ... I would just use the laptop for quake and indiegames

I'm crazy and have built the win7 rig 1st but always hardware prob cause old. works great now with new1. 300 fps in qc which is enough 4 now. only need 2 get rid of win10 spyware now

recently also got myself a new rig ... initally with 32 GB, but also added another 32 GB one week later, gotta say no difference to before and probably also not to 16 GB ... but it's just sometimes nice to 'have' things .. :-)
probably we have reached an era where more RAM is not anymore so relevant unless you have a dedicated work task for that

64gb ram now as I am multitab firefox user. 100+ tabs = 50% max usage of ram

I'm happy so far. was fun 2 build this machine.


the only problem I have now is that I am paranoid and win10 is spying on me! is it enough to disable tracking during install and use 1 privacy tool?
