Realistically speaking, when any game, scene is new, especially one which is relative to demographic age, very expensive hardware, network access, ping, LAN travels etc, its probably quite hard to legit determine how good someone/something really is unless they were a standout player like thresh, who would get owned today because its not his life anymore and the standard is so high. If you were playing quake at that time, you were probably in the top tier of global FPS players just by playing that game anyway and can spin it however you want with a certain level of authenticity.

It's an interesting phenomena that happens with Quake. I've known many casual players that played in the super early days with QW, Q2 and Q3 who told me that they were one of the best players around.

For example, at my old workplace I got talking to a colleague who said he used to be really good at RA3. So we had a few games one night and it wasn't even close. It was like Rapha playing against a random bottom of the pack online dueler, the skill gap was crazy big. I felt bad for him so had to kind of stop killing him.

He's a really nice guy though. I just think it's a case of rose coloured glasses and the nature of Quake itself, especially back then when it was all new. The feeling of being able to rocket jump and hit a few mid air shots every now and then made you feel like you were the best player ever.

I also knew people from germany who basically were average in Quake 2 who I saw later on claiming they were top players in germany in a forum ... experienced similar things in chess with people with about 1900 ELO classical chess stating they are blitz 2300 online etc., and some of them I found out even on the net with ratings far, far below, but it's also already enough to just look how they perform in over the board tournaments in blitz ...

People do this for job and business interviews all the time - self-aggrandizement is part and parcel of American culture and is encouraged within reason. Musk is clearly a shrewd and effective businessman. However, I don't think he is necessarily a great innovator. Many of the technological developments that he and other members of the PayPal Mafia have benefited from, the internet and the world wide web being front and center of these, were originally developed by the state and DoD in particular. He and other Silicon Valley types may have built upon these innovations in the liberal spirit of free-thought and laissez faire etc, but I think it's fair to say that their success was achieved largely under the auspices of the state. If a player has a nice CPU/GPU connection, monitor, they can deliver more DPS, I think people forget these games often have memory leaks too, so the longer your system is able to handle the game with ease, the longer you'll be able to be effective.

I'm only upgrading to AM5 platform this xmas, I am STILL running an old x79 and xeon CPU from 2013 and run of the mill ssd and 1333 ddr3, it served me well but the new build will feel like a super computer.

CPU score from 8500 to 28000 (and much never instruction sets)
RAM from 1333 to 6200
SSD from 600 to 6500

Not that I will be using it for being competitive at FPS but I would bet good money if I played on that setup vs my current I would be more effective for nothing more than hardware.

current EU quakeworld clan tourney has 24 clans playing. Quite a number of players have come from quake3/ quakelive and find qw the better game. Also it's a game own by the community. We own the servers, we update the clients, we run the tourneys, we make the maps. While quakelive is still limited to 250 fps.. I played quakelive for many years, but ended up liking qw more after giving it a real try. (not just test it for some hours, but give it at least some weeks or even half a year.)

Okay, I'll give it a try again. But the process of getting your own CFG (tweaking graphics, key binds etc.) then improving your gameplay, it can be frustrating nowadays.
