How fitting was communicating with say binds in a game like quake where the main struggle is your brains bandwidth handling the infinite data behind all those decisions that seem instantaneous. Thats why a game of quake can be so magical at times, it always pushes you to your boundaries, or rather the game is played in a way that is always demanding you play at your limits, constantly trying to step beyond the human limitations. Theres never enough processing power because of the need for small buffers sizes to enable you to react as fast as possible. Now in this kind of scenario, communicating with voice is just so uneconomical, takes more resources to process and also takes more time to express the output and interpret the input, and at the same time cluttering the buffer with an extra modality that has to turn on and off a totally different part of your brain messing with all your other processes. Say binds are not text that you read and try to understand, its already familiar and understood/processed beforehand and only acts as a signal in a form of a symbol that you interpret as one unit usually, and not process it like reading a line of text for the first time. This is why i always wanted to have analog clocks in quake, it would be much more intuitive and easy for new players, and of course not clutter your processing buffer and make you use again a totally different part of the brain to add and subtract thats totally messing with alll the other more intuitive processes, that are imo the main part of the game. Now ofcourse, when you progress you stop actually calculating the times and learn the language\symbols, eg; (XX: 01) is a symbol for (red XX:26) and (mega XX:36). So much easier to glance over analog clock, seeing the hand and visualising its position for the nex red or mega, when its always the same 2 intervals. Calculating item times is like stopping and solving a simple
puzzle over and over, while the psychological/tactical puzzle in quake is so deep and versatile its an artform/philosophy, its where the supernatural magic happens and make nerds scream PUT HIM IN THE NEGATIVE
