so the people who failed now for 10 years plus are now suddendly getting good at game design? Or are you waiting for Zoomer input how to convert Quake into fortnite or call of duty?
I have this mental image in my head of a shooter game that currently doesn't exist that lifts the potential of shooter games to a level that they should be at. I want something that has the speed and time to kill of Quakeworld, with the precision and technology of modern games.
I think Counter-Strike 2 is a modern version of an older game that has more of the relentless feel of older shooters, but Counter-Strike was never the pinnacle of shooter games or what should be hailed as the ultimate shooter. Counter-Strike puts too many restrictions on the player in a way that hampers the potential of the genre itself, and it’s a sadness if that potential never gets explored in the form of a game that is faster with more freedom in movement, that is modern etc.
I really believe that something like CS strikes a “good balance” between being a very noob friendly game and also being deep enough that it can be played professionally and on a high level etc - but this does not mean that it’s the optimal shooter, it just makes it popular because it appeals to many people.
Quake games are apparently too difficult for new players, but I think this should be ignored if it provokes decisions that compromises the game becoming what it could be. I think a game in the spirit of quake and Quakeworld needs to be made in a modern version where players that would love that kind of game goes “this is the best thing EVER”, because that was not the case with Quake Champions when it came out. I like many things about Quake Champions, and at some point early on the time to kill was also lower than it is now, the game just had a very bad technical foundation in the beginning, and the technical foundation is extremely important for this kind of game.
I actually came kinda late to Quakeworld, and I don’t know if I’m an anomaly, but the brutality of trying to get into that game is quite unmatched by other shooters, but it’s also a beautiful game with tons of depth - The way the game feels and flows is like a work of art, and you can express yourself through the game, through the movement and the way you play it - this is also possible in CS2, but it feels like you’re in a straight jacket compared to Quakeworld, and the longer the world moves away from Quake and Quakeworld and those days where CS originates, the more it’s likely to simply forget it and accept CS2 as the pinnacle of shooters, like nothing better is possible within the shooter genre.
congratz on getting into quakeworld ... Quake has by far the best mechanics of any shooter and executing skills gives the greatest satisfaction, satisfaction levels that never can be reached by point-click-headshot games like counterstrike ... and it is not too difficult, it's just there are bigger skill gaps, if the newcomers would play more among newcomers, noone would care. What holds true for quake is easy to learn, hard to master. The bigger problem with quake besides croyism people sitting at the lead at id and stepchild treatment of the game is its tournmanet focus on 1on1, why do people concentrate on the 1on1 aspect when what most people play is tdm! The main competition should always be in the mode that is played the most, not something that supposedly is better for spectators.
