i really was awe-inspired by HL 1, in part by the gman, but the second coming of him needs to be a little paler, like a proper "cia" type, and his face looks like it's got the possiblilty of being happy, which ruins his character role :/

Personally I don’t think this is anything groundbreaking because I doubt all these "new, near photo realistic" characters will be in actual game play but rather only appear within in-game cut scenes. I’m sure the many other engines including the Doom 3 engine is more than capable of doing this just as well as the Half-Life 2 engine if not more so. Just imagine such high quality textures and geometric detail with the lighting and bump mapping of the doom 3 engine...

your first sentence dosent make sense at all but if you are saying these characters will be in cut screens, you are wrong. they will all be in the actual game, fully interactive, moving characters, etc. at least this is the case from what i have heard.

I highly doubt they will be included in actual gameplay, and if they are there will only be one character in any particular area at a time. During the actual game when fighting etc these charecters will eat away the framerate too much.

the original half life engine wasn't as good as the quake3 or unreal engines but it still produced a far better game with heaps more interactivity and immersion than either of the other two. overall the experience felt far more 'real' despite the quality of the graphics not being as high.

anyway, who cares what they 'could' do with the doom3 engine - the fact is that from all the clips they've shown all they're going to do is produce a pseudo-'resident evil' with, as carmack has said, few enemies on screen at once. so how are they going to generate the excitement? the famous high quality id AI ... roflmao ...

Many of Id's game were NOT ment to have good AI. Quake 2 was the only game they wrongly tried to market as having good AI. The single player to the Doom series including Doom III is not ment to have good AI.

i cant remember which one but there is a scene in one of these movies i think where there is the girl from hl2 and the scienetist geezer in the same in-game bit, so there are at least occasions where you see two of them together with the photo realistic faces.

Those are the ingame characters. It's been said so many times so there's no point saying they're not.

I guess i was 'technically' wrong about saying they are not in game characters but the only characters with that sort of detils are the central characters to the plot.

They use the same kind of face model system on enemies and allies. All they do is change skins and some models.
Of course a spider wouldn't have a human facial system...

Itll be alot more basic on the enemies, anyways we'll just have to wait for the game to come out :)

the thing is, that HL2, in difference 2 D3, is offering many different kinds of environment and not only dark corridors. another thing is the awesome physics engine compared 2 the ,now heavily-cutted, D3 physics ( sum news said that ) and not at last the gr8 depth of the characters. so all in all HL2 has the same specs as D3 ( real-time lighting and advanced pixel/vertex shaders ) but in addition 2 that offers an awesome liberty and thrilling "war" atmosphere....but D3s gonna rock aswell and i think its unfair 2 compare games that have totally different design-goals!

everything in doom3 is being rendered per pixel, obviously this is not the case with hl2.
as for the physics, d3 has pretty neat "realistic" physics, and, most of all, d3's ragdolls don't look like all their articulations have been suddenly completely broken when a character gets shot. (a lot unlike hl2 if you have a look at all the videos).

could u explain how this per pixel is actually workin plz ? :)
P.S.: in D3 they cut off the physics in the way that instead of manipulating every object in the game only certain things react 2 ur actions which obviously allows more interaction in HL2 ( though the enemies really look better when shot, true )

Looks nice, but the movement of the mouth is way off. Also, it seems, there was a gap in the word "abscence", that made it a little unrealistic. The eyes are great though, the reflection highlight is nice. But how will it look in the actual game, that's the big question of course.

funny how game developers have to make the images darker to make them look more real with alot of recently released games.

asif you can compare them now. I believe that you'll have to play them first anyway. I'll be buying both and playing both anyway. So I guess for me there is no point in saying that one is better then the other now.

a bit oversized IMO... but looks great nevertheless. altho i don't like to hype too much with previews/screenshots/text anymore cos it's like always, lots of promises "OMG never seen before" things and "unbelievable you can't do that with todays gfx" but the thing is, i am almost sure the final product won't be completely in the quality of that g-man (i don't mean such detailed but giving the atmosphere of him). but i am not afraid of being convinced otherwise.
