yep, the lurid flame effectz0r and the fastswitching between different scenes. About 10 different scenes in a second are deffo too many I'd say X_X

No, you had no point. You had an opinion without argumentation. My opinion when I was a UT player only was that q3 was fugly. Now that I play it more it still is, especially with picmip 5 like everyone uses. Graphics doesn't equal gameplay I thought you knew that.

well yeh, fooze was good, but not as good as 'the badge' or annihilation (dunno about the spelling). those trickjumping thingies with cetus is fuckin' ace too.

UT is still at least one of the best, if not the best looking game considering motion of characters.

Compare it to the bunny style of Q3 or the jelly babies of UT2k3/UT2k4. The movements in UT look much smoother and cooler, that's a matter of fact. I don't need to mention how bad CS movements look.

And surely NO offence to Q3, i really like that game, but UT characters are just cooler.

Yeh i have to say i've always absolutely loved the player animations of the UT models, whoever did them was clearly very observant of how people move; when running forward the models lean slightly ahead and when reversing they lean backwards with legs kicking high. The dodge animations are also beautifully dynamic. It's a non-trivial aspect, as it actually makes the game feel faster and more dramatic.

With regard to comparing Quake 3 and UT visually, it's worth remembering the different intentions that id and Epic had regarding map design. Id mainly wanted small, tight and pacey DM levels, whereas Epic desired vast, open outdoor maps such as those found in CTF. Obviously you can accommodate more graphical detail if less if being displayed on-screen at once, so generally Quake 3 tends to look more polished and attractive visually.

if only Epic put so much thought into the ut2kx series :(

Heh, I've found watching UT-movies (I've barely played the game) almost painful due to the awful player animations. It's really the only game to which I've had that reaction.

it might be caused by the very poor demoplaying support of UT. actually the playing has many options, but the problem is that the stuff on the screen doesnt really move smooth in demos... that can cause a lesser looking animation..

Its also part of personal preference (realism vs smooth vs other factors) but I do suggest you to view a few CS and a few UT2003 movies, I think you'll find the animations even more disturbing there :p

imo the animations in UT are.. solid. They might cut-off real fast due to lack of inverse kinematics and animation blending, but they do actually feel affected by gravity, and the ground doesnt seem to be made out of ice as much as in other games... also, what therailmccoy didnt mention, the players even lean a bit to the left when you go in that direction by only using your mouse! :)

I should hope so. I just went back and watched a couple of UT-movies again to refresh my memory. Every bit as awful as I remembered. An ice skating show. The jumping/landing-'animations' are particularly bad, excellently illustrated in the slow-motion sequences in the very beginning of the fooze movie.

UT has BY FAR the worst animations of any of the games that has been mentioned in this thread.

That is to be doubted, and thus it will be nuked as "your opinion" :p

I must say, Quake had a nice solution against skating... they just gave the models skates and hoverboards... but seriously, when seeing a behindview shot of a quake player doing a speedstrafe-bunnyhop thing, I know what I personally consider bad animations :p

and UT is a perfect game for moviemaking. Actually in my opinion only few games are... they have to be fast-paced and enjoyable to watch... that means the game has to be most-likely an FPS, and most likely a fast-paced game where the main focus is beauty of frags themselves... that leaves only a few games.. UT and the quake series (and games alike) :p

If the badge3 would've been done using UT instead of Q3 it couldve been just as good! but thats just my opinion...

and be sure to check out the movies besides fooze ;)

p.s. I got the feeling you are a quake player.. so its normal to have a preference for quake movies! I just think its silly to judge movies on the base of the graphics a game has... I enjoy some quake1 movies too.. like netQuake_Brotherwars_2_high.avi even though quake1 looks so darn "ugly". the graphics dont mind me at all, and neither should they mind you :p

Looks very promising. As long as the flashy effects that somewhat blighted Disposable Heroes are kept to a minimum and don't obscure the frags, this should be class. =)
