Very impressive work, really liked it, altho a bit to much CS but thats more because I am not a CS player. The movie is good, the location is much better as last time and the way how they did with the casters and the screens, like at ESWC is very cool:)

nice show match, commentators seemed to be giving away the tactics of the teams a bit in the first map. maybe intel should forget about 4k and sponser that c4u team instead :)

He did overdo the laughing and jocularity a bit, but his voice and the way he talks is just plain professional. Not to mention that coming down from the US to the UK to cast in front of a couple of hundred people live is pretty gutsy. Not really the sort of thing you do everyday.

But the movie definitely, definitely shows where e-sports could and should be heading. Hopefully ESWC will have the same sort of atmosphere.

This was perhaps the most difficult event I've ever had to commentate on. We were highly encouraged by Intel to get the crowd involved. It took a lot of energy to do this but I'm relatively happy with how that turned out.

Broadcasting from screens in which we had no control over was an interesting challenge. It led to a little confusion at times but things got better on de_nuke.

I have often been accused of being over the top. It's something I work on to find the balance. I'd rather be over the top though than remarkably boring.

Thanks to all for the critique. But for those who judge too harsly I'd challenge you to try what we attempted. It's far more harrowing that it might appear :)

I didnt think you were over the top, thought it was very entertaining. And your efforts to get the crowd into the play were also good and had some effect, there were just to little people present to get an impressive cheer. And cheers will come by themself like with the impressive things SpawN did, crowd reacted on those and if you can just emphasize those moments I think you'll just be fine.

And please dont tone down your show, over top is > all other styles.

But Im wondering werent the players themselfs very much bothered by your cast? They must have been able to hear all you were saying since you werent allowed to give out positions when de_nuke came?

Anyway enjoyed it even tho I'm not a cs fan.

The players knew that they would be in a situation in which they could hear the shoutcasters. It was somewhat of a showmatch. Mx and I tried to be really vague with our descriptions, not calling locations or strats which ultimately is unfortunate because it:

a) Makes us look like we have no understanding of the game. Granted, Mx knows CS MUCH better than me ...

b) Makes it hard to come up with things to talk about in order to fill the time on the mic.

I agree with your statements on trying to play on the huge events of the games and allow the crowd to react. I was under some amount of pressure to get the crowd into the event, thus my nearly desperate desire to spur them into action!

Give me a stadium and you'll hear some real crowd noise ;)

Although you do have the voice and intensity from a cs players standpoint the shoutcast was really bad due to the obvious lack of knowledge about cs =\ I just feel that if you are going to have people do the announcing for a game they should be an expert on it because if not everything said is taken as... omg what is this guy talking about!!! I am sure you are a great announcer for other games which you know better but the people that run this make themselves look REALLY bad by putting all this effort into it then having shoutcasters who don't really know whats going on. I mean first time they have a quake player who obviously didn't know anything about cs and this time wasn't much better. However this is in no part the fault of the shoutcasters...they are just doing they job to the best of their abilities. Seriously though, whoever is running this...the whole thing was fairly nice accept having people do the commenting who arn't experts at what they are commenting on making the whole thing seem so amateur =\ Once again no offense to the people doing the shoutcasting but im sure quake players would get upset if some cs player tried to do a shoutcast and was like "um zero4 is picking up some health things...no wait that was ammo and is now firing some kind of laser at his opponent AND TAKES HIM DOWN!!!." Hope i don't come across in a bad way just my point of view =\

Warwitch has covered alot of games(tribes, rtcw, cod, cs?). I know he's new to counterstrike, give it time and he'll satisfy uber cs geeks like yourself in no time.

His rtcw comentating has to be the best around, probably because imo his heart was really into that game. I just wish he covered qcon 2k3 :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

It's the other way around. The commentary was too experty if you ask me, given that they are looking to attract non-CSers. (which I assume they do to some extent). The CS crowd can look at demos and provide their own expert commentary in their heads if they are that bothered with it.

should be done like in football where you have one person the main commentator who just describes what is happening in simple terms and then have an expert co-commentator who elaborates on all the technical stuff of the tactics and things where it is of particular interest.

Thought they were doing that to some extent. MarshallX was piping in sometimes with some insightful remarks, whereas Warwitch was carrying the show with that fantastic voice. Think it went really well, even though Marshall could have looked a bit more enthused.

Some of the crowd looked a bit awkward when being asked to applaud, but given time and more events, and more people, I think you can get some huge cheering going.

Very well done under the circumstances.

What you descirbe is actually how we commentate matches online and how we had planned to cover the matches at the event. But again, due to the fact that we had to be vague in order to preserve the teams strats (as they could hear us), we pretty much were inclined to say things like:

"The teams are setting up in an undisclosed location"

yeah why did they have you guys speaking in front of the teams...im sure it would have been a lot better under differant circumstances... I can see the reasoning behind wanting the teams and the shoutcasters in front of them for the look of things but...do the people who plan this stuff out actually think about the complexity of the game they are trying to present or is it run by people who think "hey this game makes us a lot of money lets try to promote it" but still dont see the differance between it and say...some arcade game like street fighter?

Having tried only a fraction of what WW and MX did in that video, I have to say:

It's not easy. From what I saw, they did a phenomenal job and portrayed gaming better than anyone criticizing them ever could hope to. Both of them know that I'm not always the nicest guy around, but that I tell things how they are.

You both did a fantastic job, and your contributions for our "sport" are nothing to talk down about.

Yep, was amazing. Bit more tactical info in the beginning would have been cool. And a big sign over each screen that says which player this is would also have been cool. Was often difficult to connect the nicks to the faces - that should be improved upon - every time you show a face, put the nick box under it.

I liked the tactical wrap-up by ahl afterwards. All in all a very good movie simonb - good compression, great content - really thought that this should be televised. Perhaps people wouldn't sneer at gaming afterwards (as much).

This is interesting. The screen with map layouts and then strategy thing was really, really great. Only thing that Warwitch should not speak like he's having a flu. Hey, nothing will come out of your nose! It sounds quite ridicilous.

Glad everyone is liking it so far guys, Scheme, the positive comments from you more than anyone are encouraging because we all know how much you love me :P

But as Gabe said, this is the first time casting has been done like this, and I think for a first time, we both did it well, and I actually hope that CPL puts their spectator area far away from the tournament area, and does the same style thing, maybe not with a screen for each player, but at least 3 game screens that are running the match we want to cast. I would love to do that, and bring the crowd BACK to spectator areas where they belong :)

We'd need a setup a bit like what they do at wcg, except it 'd be a single box for each team, with some mikes in it so that we can hear them whining/cheering :)
Or using the bigass sound-blocking headphones as seen at ESWC.

warwitch made a post in reply to someone that he had to try and not give away the positions of the players while he was commentating. really it was just a bad position for the commentators to be put in and they did the best they could to be interesting and not to specfic in my opinion but there were definatly times on cobble when you could tell which way the terrorists were rushing. Did a much better job of hiding the locations on nuke but it didnt make for as good commentating, as you may imagine, never being able to talk specifically. overall good job under the circumstances.

Haven't finished watching the movie yet, but it really looks awesome so far, even though I usually think CS is one of the most boring games out there... I wish that there'll be movies like this for other games as well, because I think it makes gamers appreciate games they don't play more.

I am a cs player and I watched it with a friend who doesn't play any games at all.

The good: looks professionally done, nice graphics, good bit with Fisken about the jumping and 180 turning.

The bad: Warwitch had a hard job, but in fairness the WWF shouting doesn't work, it took them a couple of years to try and figure out how to commentate on Xgames/extreme sports stuff so I understand it'll be the same with this hobby, but I think the commentary should be more level, noone can whip up a crowd that small and it just ends up looking silly to viewers...
The editing of the game footage was so fast and 'eXtr3me' that even I could barely understand what was happening, pick a few tense rounds and follow ONE player or maybe his opponent too, just cut to the crucial points, instead of trying to pack the whole thing into one giant jumbled game. My friend had absolutely no idea what was going on. Forcing CS to look like constant action is just too fake, focus on the tension and good shots instead, which means picking a POV and sticking to it for more than 5 seconds.

I dont want to pick at something, just keep experimenting till you find the right way to cover CS..which in my opinion is very different from something like Q3 duel, or Starcraft.

Yes the gaming section is the weakest. Id like in the next film to do "player cams" and just follow that person during a round or a certain situation. Also to focus much less on constant in your face shoutcasting - Id also like to hear what the players are saying to eachother during game. One of the main problems was that the players could hear what the shoutcasters were saying. For the next event we will use those aircraft headphones with mikes to ensure all they can hear is their teammates! Its getting the right balance between having the shoutcasters entertain the live audience & the films audience. Perhaps a separate voice-over could be added in post production to sound live but actually just designed for the film.

I think its very possible to make CS/CoD extremely exciting to spectate. It just requires a lot more experience making the films + a few more days in the editing room (we only had 2). Hopefully for the next film we will have a bigger budget and be prepared to cover the gaming section well!

As far as the other interview sections go tho I was pretty happy with them.

Anyhow, you have some valid points. I think everyone involved in working with esports (myself included) is trying to find the answer to the riddle of what it is that will take our hobby and truely turn it into a sport.

I personally have been taking books filled with notes just based off the commentary here. The intelligence level of the esreality community is pretty amazing and I'm finding some of the best feedback here.

Having done events in both the traditional way and this new showmanship way I tend to feel that the blending of the two will be the key to future success.

Good movie! As for Warwitch's commentating when I first connected I thought "jeez, who gave this overly excitable yank a microphone?!" but after a minute of listening in I thought the combination commentators complemented eachother very nicely, seemed very professional and made fantastically entertaining listening!

When it came to knowledge of CS, I thought it could have been dumbed down even more.

The tactic introduction to nuke was a brilliant idea.... although little things could have been changed with the way it was presented to make it sound better.. such as instead of "T" or "CT" say Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist. Instead of "Spawn" say "Start", to make it much easier to understand for people less well informed!

It sounded like they knew *enough* to give commentry! Although you can't please everyone =] Good video simonb!

Having a commentator in the arena before the live crowd is kind of strange. I know I wouldn't enjoy a person running around in the stands yelling, giving the play-by-play, and trying to get me worked up at a Hockey game. I'm guessing the people who attended this event knew enough about the game to follow the action and would rather just watch the screens and listen to the teams shouting.

I say you tell this Intel rep that next time you just do round summaries before the live audience - who got most frags, who is on a killing spree etc, and add play-by-play on the video later. He'll listen, you are the experts after all.

I don't play CS and had some difficulty following this. Longer sequences at a single pov would probably help. However, this video is very good as it is. Impressive stuff from you shoutcasting guys, I imagine it to be hard as hell.

Oh and you might want to run a resize filter to get rid of the non-square pixel aspect ratio.

Didn't really like the way how Warwitch uses such an altered voice all the time like he's shoutcasting a pornmovie.

No seriously, if you commentate so over the top at every meaningless thing that happens it feels so fake, talking like a rambo when shoutcasting will almost always look fake actually. Except for the altered voice (which I find simply very annoying, a very personal opinion) the tsn guys did a very good job though. I think if you fix the voicealtering the shoutcasting is simply great. Right now it gives gaming this extra nerd-touch; the greatness of a sport/game should speak for itsself and should not be forced to much.

Simonb's work is very good too, although you could almost count marshallx's nosehairs at the end of the fisker-interview! ;)

overal a very good movie, if everything is just a tad better, bigger, more entertaining (crowds, setup etc.) next time (IEE3) it can be great tv material which will interest all kinds of people.

Heh, ok. Well, you alter the volume and power, lower volumes etc, more trembling sound. Don't know very well how to explain. Like you said it's just preference I guess. I prefer to listen to MarshallX who speaks very simple, fast, clear, basic.
