I did Maths w/ mechanics, and discovered that you had to actually work and learn stuff after P1/M1... (got 95% in P1, 90% in M1, about 20% in P2 and M2. Well done me)

Economics was OK, I found it pretty interesting, much more interesting than the business studies stuff I saw...

I quite liked physics, though again, I had to actually do work. I settled for two weeks work before the exams instead, but did much better there.

French would be quite interesting.... If you want to do something, why not go ahead? It can't hurt.

Agreed. AS Maths wasn't too hard when I got used to the different style of maths being taught... I got close to 100% in P1, S1 and M1. At A2 it was noticably harder.. especially P3 and M2. From what I heard speaking to people I know who did both s2 and m2, stats was noticably easier.

I think to an extent some people do see business studies as a micky mouse subject (didn't do it myselt so can't really comment). But I think it depends largely on if/where you want to apply to uni and for what course. A very popular and oversubscribed uni + course might not look on it too favourably. Then again as far as i'm concerned it was more important that I did subjects I found interesting.

i canbt comment on maths/physics, but if you cant do them well, then theyre safe as anything, go for them :x

business studies i did do.. and peopel DO think of it as a bit crap.. universities included.
i got full marks at AS level bs.. and only dropped 30 at a2. its not the most taxin subject in the world.

if you can choose between ec and bs, then do economics.. itll fit in well with your mathsm and really isnt too disimilar to bs anyway.

yeah i was originally going for economics, can't think of a reason other than on some whim. bs seems more interesting to me, but im wondering if that's just because i've done it and have a resonable understanding. econ is a completly new concept to me, i've never seen an econ'x lesson, so i'll do some further research before i make the choice. if only this was on offer :)

I did Maths with mechanics, and it's not *that* bad if you put the time into it. Also, if you put the time into it, physics is an absolute breeze. I remember laughing my way through the PH3 paper as easy maths. Business studies is widely regarded as a bit of a soft option - but really, it depends what you want to do later in life.

You need (unfortunately) to be choosing your a-levels with a degree in mind. Splitting yourself over a wide range of subjects doesn't necessarily come across too well to universities - if anything, it can suggest you're not that serious about the degree you've chosen.

With that in mind though, you can do most courses with a language option or year in europe or something, so your chosen four could fit together quite well. I always regretted giving up French at a-level, but I just didn't have the time with the other subjects I was doing. Languages are much harder to pick up later.

The usual route to aviation is RAF then fly commercial later, I think. It's either that or take a related degree (I know a number of pilots study things like meteorology, I've got a friend who did that at Reading a while back).

I could probably have phrased things better in my previous post. I dropped French after GCSE because this was in the days before A2 (most subjects weren't modular, so A/S was pretty rare, and wasn't offered at my school). Workload-wise: I did full a-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Computing and *cough* General Studies. If you're prepared to put the effort in, you're not going to be short of time over the a-level period. It's just a question of how hard you want to work.

Did History, Biology, Sport and Excercise and Computing. Enjoyed History the most, a pretty straight forward A level, nothing to taxing. A guarenteed A if you put anthing more than minimum effort into it. Interesting at times as well. Computing was awful thougth, 2 years of VB enougth to make anyone suicidal.

business studies IS a mickey mouse subject, sorry to tell u but it is :>, make sure u keep maths and physics and ull do ok, but i would do history personally, thats what i did and got 6 offers from universities (good ones btw, birmingham, cardiff were 2).

oh and YES they do look at the subjects u do, not just the grades. for instance i did chemistry at AS with history maths and physics, i was the only one to do this and the only one to get all offers from unis. when asking my chemistry tutor whether they had an effect he said most definately.

oh and ye im doing economics and finance and business studies would have been useless for this, they teach u all a level business studies / economics in the first 4 weeks, then its redundant.

edit: just read u r attempting to become a pilot, join the raf. i have an raf scholarship for pilot after uni, im under no obligation to actually do this and i get 1000+ per year for uni etc. technically im supposed to pay it back if i dont join for 6years or something, but iv many friends that havnt :).

and btw, i'd goto uni if u wanna be a pilot, theres no other way, i dont care what the recruitment officer says, you WILL regret it in the long run.
ps. a levels are even easier than gcse, i did almost no work and doing even less now ! :)

no its not a good backup, it is your primary option. if u dont go to uni these days you are a nobody, its a fact of life these days.

That's the problem really - the government wants 50% of young people to do degrees. Hence if you end in the 50% that don't have one, you're likely to be disadvantaged.

It's a really dumb stance if you ask me - the last proper study I saw indicated that 5% of jobs need a degree, another 15% or so would benefit from one, and in the rest it made no difference at all. But noooo, the government wants everyone with degrees (and debts I guess) so we lower standards and let anyone in.

your looking at exactly the same a-levels i did..

maths + mechanics
physics
business studies
general studies (i did this instead, but you have to select a language for it.. i doubt its anywhere near as hard as a-level french, but still :D )

good luck, if u enjoy the physics you will be fine.. i personally found the pure maths sections fairly difficult, but mechanics was fine.. and business studies is a cruise compaired to the others.. and fairly enjoyable.

General studies typically has no workload. What it amounts to is some general knowledge, some maths, some science, some language. If you've done well in your education so far you should be able to pass it right after GCSE.

At least, that's how it used to be and I'm not convinced it'll have got harder.

yeah i agree with sky, at my place they give u one two hour session a week for general studies and tbh we didnt do much in them.. its just another a level to add to your name.

i went to uni studying at first civil engineering, then switched to automotive engineering (car design), my place wanted like 28 points at a-level so my business studies was accepted fine, i just had to have a c or higher in maths and a b in physics :)

btw watching some french movies is definitely a good idea if u wanna improve, i can look out for some titles if u want, even if i don't like french cinema too much :/
