Does anyone know the name of the map where prozac runs at the last part of the movie? That map looks awesome and want to download it.

Well now I managed to download it I can truly say this is great. Good content, brilliant flow, nice music and some awesome speed caps.

The fluidness in this movie is so very sweet, the same feeling can't be achieved while watching content ingame. The only downfall is, the smoothness during tricks is awesome yet doesn't seem to be on the same level for frags? Maybe someone can explain this? I assume it is down to the amount of motion involved.

Recording sequences for motion blur basically means avidemo 1000 fps so it takes a lot of time. Most of the frag sequences were just shot at 45.45

We wanted to have both motion blur and sharp sequences.
But yes you're right, the brain accomodates to an fps, even very high and the motion blurred sequences seem more fluid to our brain (like infinite fps). Basically when you look at 25 content then 30 you see it's better, then 45 same thing etc, until very high fps say 150. When you go back to a lower fps you feel like it's very choppy.
After watching the motion blurred sequences you feel like the sharp sequences are lower fps and look less fluid..

There is no remedy other than watching some 25 fps vid and come back to LC again =). Then you'll understand what i mean.

We put the motion blurs rather to the end of the video, so it's going upwards in fluidity :)

somehow you're reading what has tended to be constructive criticism (or at least intended to be) as negativity, probably in part due to the over inflated self importance you seem to suffer from. Feel free to go back and be constructive / negative / whatever to any of our movies.

tomboss has openly stated on the own-age forums that he's quite happy to have constructive criticism, and any non-selfcentered producer of anything of worth would act the same way. so props to tomboss for that. you'll find us at SP tend to act the same way. ie.. grown up. :>

I don't think it look that bad for 33.53MiB per second for a 45.45FPS movie.

The mo-blurred sequences are much more efficiently encoded than the rest :) The quality obviously drops with regular, non-blended screencaps, so obviously it's gonna be switching a little bit.

I don't have exact figures but on some tests I had lying around, a very high motion 1st person sequence with no hud could take more than a third of the filesize out, compared to the same sequence recorded in regular avidemo, while looking better :)

One test clip, at 40 fps and with only 120 fps worth of so-called blurring (3 frames captured for each blended frame) was still smaller and looked better than the same sequence with blending disabled and at 30 fps.

Gaz's new technique improves on this and looks muuuuch smoother than that blending.

Any chance of an explanation of this technique? I have a bit of interest in video processing/encoding, and I know from small experience that games are hell to compress.

It's just 1000 fps blended down to 45. It gives a result close to real motion blur when movement isn't too extreme.

Interestingly enough, motion blurred sequences at 50 fps take less space than at 45 fps.
Haven't made thorough tests for blended sequences with any fps yet :).
But to give you an idea, for sharp ones (the rest of the vid) the size increases by 50% with a 100% increase in fps (25->50) and 79% for a 400% fps increase (25->100fps). For the same objective quality of course, no tricking there :).

This is explained simply by the fact that realtime quake in-game sequences have too much movement in them to be encoded efficiently at low fpses like 25 or 30, the codec is just not working as it was designed to.

I always thought it was the sharpness of the image that was the problem. I remember doing massive smoothing on q3 video vastly improved compressability, but in the end didn't do much for quality. The edges in q3 are very sharp, both in luma and chroma, and I suspect that doing motion blur removes this, gives higher perceptual quality, and with higher FPS, has less movement per frame.

motion blur should cancel out the need for high frame rates, i mean, tv's and movies have done without for long enough.

at which point, some smart alec will probably say "aah, but interlaced tv actually runs at 50fps (or 60fps ntsc)!!", to which i say it's interlaced!! ;-)

Yes, motion blur improves on smoothness even more but it doesn't do miracles. motion blur at 25 fps is still choppy.
the smoother the better and at 70mb worth of tricking sequences be sure i will do it again whenever i can.
High fps + blur has the side effect of making lower fps vids larger in size at same quality, btw.
if i have an opportunity to make an all-tricking vid, it'll be 50 fps, interlaced or not or both versions.

please don't make interlaced content. you of all people should know that gaz. it's horrible for playback on a progressive scan display.

i know 25-30fps is hardly ideal; the human eye can definately distinguish between this and higher frame rates, motion blur or not. I think what a lot of people fail to take in to account is consistency, and frame rate coupled with exposure time. a consistent panning shot at 24fps can still look as smooth as you like with the right exposure time (which leads to motion blur). Of course, if you're playing back video on any device (tv,monitor,projector) you need to also take in to account the refresh rate, as this can also effect the smoothness of playback. eg.. 50fps(i25fps) played back on a ntsc (60fps (i30fps)) will be jerky.

alot of people in gaming presume that higher fps will always be smoother, because their games go slow, and things jerk like crazy. again, it all comes down to a consistent framerate, which processor intensive games tend not to have - infact it's all content based.

props to you gaz for pushing what is becoming the accepted quality threshold in movies. i guess i'm a bit annoyed at the though of having to cap things at higher frame rates, it not only takes longer, requires more space, but reduces the flexibility with the editing. :<

it's really no problem to play interlaced content tbh, mplayerc does it well for mpeg2 content and you can use vlc for mpeg4 (only supports top field first).
if i do interlaced content it'd be for mpeg2->dvd.
as for progressive, the most fexible is 50, it's 30% bigger that 30fps. you can convert it to interlaced and 25 if you're a harcore low fps fan :)

also keep in mind we are not filming a scene with a real camera. and movements are several fold faster than in real life scenes. 24fps is certainly not enough. even 60fps is considered unplayable at high skill level no only because of lag (the main problem) but also because it's a terrible strain for eyes.

I agree with you on the high-framerate thing, but you can't really compare watching and playing when it comes to framerates. When you play you interact with whatever happens onscreen, you don't just watch it. So a low framerate will be more noticable when playing than when just watching.

of course, the choice is yours, but my reasons not for doing are
a) the above statement would be only nearly true if you're adding in motion blurring. for non-motion blured footage you'll find that increase in res/fps will increase necessary bandwidth to keep quality substantially. of course that depends upon the footage; first person fast movement encodes badly compared to smooth third person camera. eg.. iT2 is approx 30000frames (20*60*25), whereas lyon uses 44055frames ((16*60)+19)*45). nearly 150% again. By your estimation lyon should be the same size as iT2 because of all that motion blurring, but it's not, it's larger (around 50+mb), and has what i think (and others have said) generally worse image quality. This isn't proof, as i'm not sure what bitrate you used, or what other xvid settings you used, whether you used zones, and of course, the general footage is totally different, etc etc. so infact, this is a pretty bad example... lol.. :-)
b) 40fps, 45fps, or whatever is not a standard that you can easily transfer to any other standard. you either add frames, or you cut frames out, which result in jittery playback (this is comparable to telecining a 23.9fps movie to pal or ntsc. you're never going to get the smoothness in motion.), or you resample which results in smoother, but lower quality images.
c) higher frame rate requires longer time capturing, longer time editing, more space to store clips, more space for you final master, more time to encode, and a higher playback processing requirement for the people you should be aiming this movie at - the audience

for me point a is a clear winner from the offset. picking 50fps or 60fps (depending on your localised tv format) would make more sense, but i think you'll find doing that will bring points b and c in to play even more. infact, using standard xvid direct show filters you'll probably find that most people wouldn't be able to play back a 60fps full frame xvid, let alone with the postprocessing filters you'd need to mask the increasing amount of blocks and artifact's you'd see from the increased bandwidth.

at the end of the day, i'd even question your basic assumptions (albeit, which appear to be based on your own research) that xvid encodes better quality at smaller files sizes even with potentially double frame rates. i'd question them because i'm inquisitive about video encoding in the gaming arena, not because i think you're a liar. maybe i'll do a motionblurred 50fps test of a couple of iT2 ghost scripts. :-)

I could elaborate with empirical arguments on the other points but as for the processing power : our vid plays perfectly on a 650MHz pc and takes 11%cpu on my own 2.4GHz when using proper player.

So if that doesn't break your argument, i think i have nothing more to say :).

btw, it takes 2 dvds to store our entire project and xvid encodeing isnt slower because motion estimation being the main speed eater, it works better when motion is encodable at all (high fps or slowmo, we chose the former)

How can it take only two DVDs? Can't imagine that you are using either uncompressed or Huffyuv as source when editing with such a small project.

2dvd's.. dual layer, = around 18gb, which is okay.
your source files may only take up that much as tga hook uses a nice jpg compression. however for the last major projects i've made they've both been in the region of 60-80gb of source media (of which 100% was encoded with high quality mjpeg). lossless encoded (huffy) final encodes between 12-15gb

your whole argument here hinges on creating an encoder perfect/friendly media file with blissful motion that xvid just laps up, and i'm afraid i fail to believe that lyon meets that criteria... (or if it's possible to make such a thing from high qiality quake3 footage) why? because in lyon the quality of the final encode is all over the place; nice in sections at times, with close to appauling in others. This not only suggests the motion searching is failing more often than you think, but you may not be using the optimum encoder settings, and definately not using zones to improve quality / size. infact you only have to look at the frame by frame comparisons of some of the motion blurred footage to see that it's probably using around the same amount keyframes as the method i use, purely because of the nature of the footage. first person, reflex based gaming.. lots of flicking of the wrist isn't going to make things easier overnight by motion blurring and increasing the framerate (whilst using the same kbps). add to this the large amounts of un-motion blurred footage (because, as i think you admitted, you couldn't be bothered to spend time capturing everything at HIGH fps) and overall you get a worse output.

as for cpu overhead, i was talking with post-processing decoding, as i found it was necessary at the very least to turn on deblocking to make things look nice on my tft. and by nice, i mean subjectively compared to other gaming movies i've watched (and made). fyi, amd64 3800+, nvidia gt6800, running the movie from sata 300gb drive 7200rpm with 16mb cache.
maybe you're using ffdshow for xvid playback, which does improve on the amount of processing power required somewhat, but i think it's foolhardy to assume that everyone is using that direct show filter, or indeed, even the xvid filter to playback a movie. I guess, at the very least i can see you've tested the playback on a couple of low spec machines and they've played back okay, so that's good. I'd hate to see you go thru the same amount of hassle with playback issues as some people did with iT2, and that's after testing on quite a few pc's. :-/

We did 3 test encodings before the final one so quality isn't perfectly tuned ofc.

content was great. other than quite an average movie. the quality was very nice for some motion blurred scenes (it should be considering the filesize) but for others, it was average. the high fps was quite pointless imo. editing wasnt anything groundbreaking. the fonts used looked quite bad in most places. the music was synched in the last song atleast (the e.s posthumus one i think) but i couldn't notice it the first time i watched the video. I had to look for it. Overall worth the download to watch good content but I think its been hyped way beyond what it actually is. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it weren't for the high expectations that i had.

content was great.. agreed.. some of the best frags i've ever seen and that q3wcp9 run was sick. i'm a quaker and its the only game i play.. yet like netrex i too look for other things in movies. even great content can get repetitive after a while imo.

if anything i'd say the quake3 movie scene has often proved it has a great balance of content AND editing. and the result of this is that its movies are enjoyed not only by quakers, but by people who don't even play or like quake. the same cannot be said, for example, of the counterstrike movie scene which is, it has to be said, almost entirely devoid of editing skills (except a handful of people). which tends to result in movies enjoyed only by cs'ers.

i guess it's already said but i'd just like to add that it was good until the rammstein-part and the quality in-game was utter crap.
otherwise it was kinda cool, that queen-part gave me some goosebumps.

what i meant with the sentence "qualy was not good for the size" that the quality was not good for the size...the quality is indeed switching, some scenes look cool, some look cheap...however the filesize is for a movie of that lenght TOO BIG, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE QUALY IS!

and yes i would expect some 5.1 sound or multiple audiolines for that filesize...cause:

...cause YES i think i can do such compression by myself...compared to other guys in this topic I dont post stuff i know shit about...

i dont see why movies have to be a certain size these days, maybe a few years ago when not everyone had a decent connex, but now loads of people have high speed internet and big file sizes are not a problem.

i don't think those with acceptable bandwidth mind the size if the quality *is* accurate :)
and just because people tend to have the bw we shouldn't get lazy over compression and stuff, it still takes 1-4 hours for the average guy to download a 500MB file.
but anyway, i didn't intend to comment on this subject as i just don't care about the filesize (enough bw to spend (still takes a few hours)).

Switch the mode to Allow all popups from Tools -> Quick Preferences.

Then just refresh, download and switch it back. It's how I do it when I have to download from badct.

I loved the quality. Nothing else really gripped me. Frags, tricks, flag caps etc etc were nice but i've seen it all before.

I think the perfect movie needs to have some kind of storyline, good editing, good frags, something that flows well, good music, not too long and credits which isn't 25% of the movie.

You prolly have a very outdated XviD codec. Ok you say no, then certainly some big problem. Try mplayer (the linux player we talk about in the readme), it works very well, lacks some features but has some no other player has too.
