Several months ago, an employee of my wife called in sick 2 days in a row with no excuse, (he was one of her donut cutters). She finally talked him into coming in to work (nights), he wore a robe with a large bump below waste level.

That Raven are looking for testers on quake IV at the end of August.
Only for a couple of weeks I hear.
I'm expecting a lot from this game too. I'm certain it will be a success because it's bound to be an improvement on Doom3 and I'm pretty sure that will be good enough for people to stick with it.

I'm already looking into upgrades and already dreading the trolls from ESR giving me abuse when I see them online!

bingo...gaming has been dumbed down so far since q3's release a game that demands proficiency of many skills to be even remotely good will never become popular outside of the hardcore gamer market.

In what way? That's a pretty bold statement, even though I've got the same feeling

Right now it sounds like Q3 with worse FPS (fps dependant physics too... great), no OSP features, worse netcode (likely), worse maps (likely), so unless they just haven't told us about anything that makes it different I can't see it being too great.. people will still play it though; it's quake.

- Hm... When Quake 3 came out I had to buy a new computer to get decent frames, half a year later i bought a better GFX card, to juice the 125FPS out. So the FPS issue is really not that new. People will need to update to get decent frams or if they updated for Doom, they should be fine.

- OSP wasnt out when Q3 shipped. Altho I guess you think it's going to happen the same as it did with the D3 OSP. Let's hope it does not, or that someone else codes another competition mod.

- I remember reading about the netcode, being advanced over the Doom3 one, and oriented around Quake3. So basicly it should work fine.

- Most played maps of the Quake series are the stock maps, made by id staff, so how can you say the maps will prolly suck. Maybe the item placement will suck, that can be fixed as it was in Quake3. Altho this time Raven is making the game, I can only guess, that there will be some id made dm maps.
My other guess is, that we will see an id software bonus mappack after a few month of games release.

The SP part of the game is not that much important to me, and for the most people who hang here. So If the multiplayer is fun and solid as they say in interviews I can't see how it can fail.
I don't know about you but asmuch as I like Quake3, it's getting old and is not that much fun to play every evenening, so it's time for something new. If it's a revolution or not, we'll see.

I'm not comparing it to Q3 out of the box, dear. What I'm saying is if they're going to offer us Q3 gameplay all over again why should we pay to play a game we already have with worse performance and features. I really hope they're not just re-hashing Q3 but so far that what it sounds like, although admitedly we don't really know any real specifics about the MP as of yet as they've been pretty hush hush about it.

As for maps of the duel maps.. T2 is the only stock map played (pro-* maps were thanks to the community, not iD), TDM... dm7 (bad map in terms of depth and strategy... it's fucking 2D!), CTF ctf2 (yay). But maps aren't even in iD's hands now so fuck knows what's going to happen there.

Also if the netcode is oriented around Q3 I hope we're not bundled with 50ms of lag on top of pings again.

What I'm saying is we already have a Q3 that runs fine... I want Quake4 not Quake3.5.

The core gameplay will be the same as Quake3s. Weaons/maps/modes will differ of course. This is what we all have bitched about for ages. Now that they say they including the same physics/movement in Quake4 it's wrong again.

They went another way with Doom3, which they could've named Qauke4. Did you like it? No.

So aslong as they keep the basics of Quake play, and add new stuff, I guess it's ok. It's the same Epic's doing for ages. Seems to work out. A new look is quite welcome.

Well the weapons so far sound to be pretty similar.. I know it's a Quake so they will be but the direct PG->NG swap is pretty lol. I never really spent much time (probably 2 hours total at a friends) playing D3, single player games aren't really my thing.

A new look is cool and everything but not when the game has FPS reliant physics, I don't want to go back to 1999/2000/2001 before I had a computer capable of 125fps if it means the gameplay is the same thing as the game we just spent almost 6 years playing and are bored of. Basicly I'm looking for something new, not a slower version of something I already have. Although to be honest I'm going to play Q4 anyway if I have the time purely to see if I'm proved wrong (which I sincerely hope I am).

I mean, I know Q4 isn't going to be perfect.. I haven't played a game that is yet. I think with CPMTDM and CCTF I came pretty close though and it's the contrasts between these games and... well everything else which usually puts me off games. I think we've had things too easy for us through Q3. :)

Where exactly did you read that the game will have physics depending on your FPS. As far as I know the engine is locked at 60FPS and 60ticks, basicly the same as Doom3. This doesn't mean that the game can't feel the same as Quake3 arena without the bug. There are ways around it, for example pmove fixed it in Q3 and there are more convenient one.
If you have any source about that I'd be glad if you could share it.

We all have different tastes, I for one don't enjoy playing any kind of CPM physics game, because it just feels dumb to me, how I can make cyrcles in air and things alike. As far as I remember QuakeWorld never gave you that much freedom, so CPMA is a mod, and honestly not that many like it, but let's not turn this into a VQ vs CPM debate.
CCTF is nice, yeas but I prefer the CTF in Quake3, over the classic one, at least in Quake3. In Quake and Quake2 runed CTF was a blast, but in Quake3 it feels strange. I also thing that some Raven guy said, that the Q4 CTF's gonna be similar to the one of Quake3, ie. without runes and grapple, but don't take my word for it. Browse their forums. Anyway if they go with the CCTF style, adjusting to runes and grapple is no problem for me, so no mather what CTF we get, let's hope it will be a blast.

I think if they would go with the CPM feel to the game, not many people would be happy at first, sure they'd addapt, but you know, doom3 tryed to introduce some news, and it wasn't accpted that friendly.

Imagine the Rainbow Six series to become CS, now imagine the reactions of the fans of the R6 series when they see that. Same goes here. But once again, different people - different taste. Not anyone's gonna be pleased I guess.

The FPS dependant thing I've only heard off people on here, I've not been following Q4 that closely so far due to time constraints.

I wouldn't want another CPM or CCTF as I can already play those games. I don't want games I can already play. That's all I've been saying all along. I don't see how you've missed this. I'm repeating this point in this post as mentioning it once per post so far hasn't seemed to have worked so far. I want a new game. This means I want a game with significant gameplay differences to games I already own and have played. This is still my point. I mentioned other games as examples of games I already have and like but do not want Q4 to be. I have already played these games. I am mentioning again that I would like to play something new and not infact a game I already have played. I am hoping you will now actually get the point I was making all along. I sound like an Amy Hempel book. She is a good writer I suggest you pick up 'Reasons To Live'. It will break your heart. I would like to mention for the first time that I would be most happy if Q4 was Q4 gameplay not Q3 gameplay with fancy looks. I don't care about looks in FPS games. I already have Q3. I do like something new whether it be weapons or physics or item systems in FPS games. I have already played Q3 for almost 6 years. I would not like to play q3 again under a different name. Also I already can play CCTF and CPMTDM if I want to. I do not wan't Q4 to be either of these. I already have these. They're good, but only examples. This does not mean I want to play them under the name Q4. I was serious about the Amy Hempel thing. I hope you now see that I infact already own Q3 and do not want to play Q3's gameplay under the name Q4. I would also like to point out that I would like to play Q4's gameplay under Q4. Not Q3's. Amy Hempel's 'Reasons To Live' is a good investment. Q3 is a game I like but already own. I don't normally buy books as they're expensive. I am looking forward to seeing if Q4 is something new. I am not looking forward to seeing if Q4 is Q3 rehashed. But 'Reasons To Live' is a good investment. Buy it.

I know what you are telling me, but we're talking about a sequel.

The game is based on the story of Quake2 only moments later. So the singleplayer experience wont be nowhere near the same. You have a squad which plays with you, you can mount up in mechs, you turn into a strogg in the middle of the game etc..

The game will be totaly different from what we had in Quake2. Sure it's another action FPS, but theres so little to be able to change in a FPS game, aside graphics, and gameplay.

The mulitplayer on another hand will be prettymuch the same as it was yeah. So how can we change that. Every FPS out there has pretty much the same gameplay, different weapons, different movement, yet the ultimate goal is the same, kill the opponent, capture the flag etc. It's still a Quake game, so thay can't turn it into a Deus Ex or Counter-Strike, if you understand.

It's like with the movies, all Star Wars movies follow the same theme, thus they are sequels, you can't expect Star Wars Episode II to be a western, or bring something totaly new to the story.

I really don't know of what innovation you're speaking of, since I can hardly see what else could they make in an action shooter. Even the slightest change in the physics or new abilities might ruin the name Quake, afteral it stands for fast paced deathmach action.

They made a sequel to q2 and threw in q3 aswell, jus to be a newer q3 to make us happy. It's just made do make money, and they will. It is a BRAND NEW GAME whatever you claim it to be. It's not q3.5 because q3 doesn't even have a "campaign" style of play!

funny fact, i watched a ut2k4 video the other day between lauke and falcon with you and some other dude shoutcasting, i think you talked half the speed opposed to when you were shoutcasting a q3 match.

As for q4, i hope its fast, i hope it has shaft, rail & rox launcher(new good weps always welcome), then nothing can go wrong, ah yes and a bunch of great maps. Graphics ? picmip 5 here i come !

What the hell are you talking about, and why the hell are you talking to me about it?

jesus... play ut2k4 with 130% gamespeed and you have a game that's faster than q3, only thing that adds speed to q3 game is strafing, but that really aint game speed. Its just as if you could keep on doding while accelerating in the meantime under ut.

Weaponfights are lot faster in UT. I just wish people would die a bit faster in the game though, as in q3 (someone said in i dunno wich post) it's 1rocket 0.3 shaft and then boom. (or was he taling about cpma? dont remember..) In ut sometimes you should see how much damage someone can take; really amazing.

It's just the ut players that make the game slow ; they had instantweaponswitch under 2k3 and they moaned about it cuz it was too much spam according to them. Imho the game would be lot funnier at gamespeed 120 or something :) But UT people really prefer mid/long range hitscan fights.

i was merely clarifying what others have written since no one seemed to understand "half speed" and "twice the speed", i see you understand now.

Todd Hollenshead: That's a good question. I think what we'll want to do is test the networking, because we've pretty much redone all the networking and we like to get the community to test that and make sure that it's going to be solid before the game is done. We'll have to see as we get closer to completion of both the single-player and the multiplayer elements of the game as to how that's going to work out.

Todd Hollenshead: When you say "test," it kind of makes me think of Quake Test and QIII Test. In both those situations, it was a very early look at what the multiplayer was like. Quake III Test, I believe, came out in February, and the game came out in December, so that's nearly ten month in between. I think that one of the things that we learned from that is that we like to have all of the elements of the multiplayer done and not use it as much as a gameplay testing, but to really test the technology, so you would see a much more polished version of it if I could draw it up and have it be the way I wanted it to be.

Im with wheat on the ESWC 2k5 best action too, even if I was there to cast UT2004. The Q3 action was the most exciting gaming of the event. Even the UT guys got stuck into playing Q3 on their days off...
