The fact that purri outclassed every single opponent, only losing a few frags during the whole tournament - and even winning the final with a "wicked sick" score and an impressive and, atleast for most of us, never seen before ownage maplock and control makes this a game to remember (even if your not a swede).

It was truly a great game to watch, not for the intense and excitment, since there was none of that, but for the -perfect- play from purri.

Also, this was probably the last thing we'll ever see from Quake 2 - and I'd say it was a damn good final show!

if there was a decent prize pot to draw good competition and motivate more practice from skilled gamers and he still won his games with the same dominating results then I would agree with you. But hes been playing the game non-stop against people who just picked up the game in the past few months, what he did wasnt that outstanding.

impressive? far from it (if you've seen purri more then once that is). Purri was imo way off his best form. It's not hard to play 'perfect' against low-skilled player (by comparison with purri, because doze is idd a very good player, but just not good enough to really make a gg).

I just hope purri will keep playing and give q4 a try.

There will possibly be another death for q2 when q4 is out in 40 days. I heavily doubt that Q2 will ever feature as a big tournament game again. A couple of online leagues here and there isn't anything special.

Ah, OK ! I can take a look at it, but I need help with config settings. If I remember correctly I get a BIG text saying something about "Following XXXX" when checking Q3 demos.
I hate that since it blocks big parts of the view and I am clueless on how to get rid of it.

there is no hitsound, you only hear the opponent's moaning when you hit.

I think he hit about +24% of his rails in the final game. For purri that's almost like missing everything, but doze played well and dodged the slugs real well.

I agree. Q3 pro demos are FAR more impressive. In this game Purri used almost exclusively RL and rail (just proves to me that Q3 weapon balance is superior.). And he missed "90%" of his rails. ZzZz.

Pause the movie at the end when accuracy for purri is visible. OK, I agree that his +24% railgun accuracy is far below his normal capacity, but pleeez get the facts straight.
If he had showed up his normal rail accuracy ... would you have stayed awake better ? ;)

24% railgun is actually appauling on LAN (at this level) when you consider many good q3 players can get DBl that score online and it's not uncommon for the top tier players to play with 50+ vs other skilled opponents.
Even if he added 20% to that score it would still be ok, and considering the scope for rail on that open map I expected more.

TBH with all the hype surrounding Purri I was expecting some sort of god,
Toxics aim, Coolers strat etc, but as what often happens when a community is built up around an old game that is not really supported by the current top q3/ut/pk players it's so easy to create a little world/league where no one can touch you.

If you have a players owning everyone in the q2 community, then I don't mean to be mean but it's more than likely to do that with the good players moving on.
I'm not saying there are no good players in q2, just saying, it's got to a point now where if the community wants some recognition for their players then they really need to play quake 4 seeing as it's a fresh opportunity for everyone and it's goign to be very popular IMO.

In 2006 Painkiller is going to be DEAD. But what if 10 very average players continued to play it for what 7-8 years.
So now lets fast forward, the year is 2012 (the same time from when q2 was released to present) and theres a PK tourney held by the CPL.
What would you expect from those players?
Would those players be better than the vo0 from 2005?
Probably yes, but only because he moved on.
And I'm pretty sure those very players would be seen as elite in the PK world, but that's as far as it can ever go. Its the scottish league and you'll never know how good is good until you choose to play premier.
Or a game from this century to put things into better perspective.

Doom 3 was a classic example of this, many players like G0pher and Rocketboy quit D3 when CPL announced pk in 2004.
While this happened many average to above average (but not elite) players got very good at Doom 3 (or so they thought) and convinced themselves they were better than the Rocketboy from 2004, yet when it came down to it, their skills were still inferior even though they probably had an extra 7 months of play time, which is a lot considering the game is only 12 months old. They were close to RB, but still lost. That's my point, there is only so much comparison and credit you can allocate to an old game. Had Rb, Gopher etc all carried on playing then I'm sure they too would have improved, hence those plaeyrs would have lost by just as much.
Anyway congrats to purri, not taking anything away, but it's just hard to get a real idea of overall skill.

I merely pointed out that 90% misses was not true and that the more correct 24% was way below purris normal accuracy.
I fail too see the connection between that statement and other PC games or scottish soccer teams :)

Quake2, Quake3 and PK are totally different games. Comparing them and their players with eachother is IMHO not the same as comparing scottish soccer teams vs modern teams. They still play the same game (soccer) and we have a basis for comparison.

Saying purri is good due to all good players moving on is plain silly IMHO. OK, right now the Q2 society is narrowing down and it just may be true in some sense. The problem is that he has been a dominant force long before the players left Q2.
Just back up the clock 2-4 years and the Q2 community was not a pool of leftovers that wasn't good enough to move on.

I do however hope purri tries Quake4 and likes it ... that's the key word here. If he don't LIKE the game he wont play it, which in my book doesn't mean he didn't have the skillz.
If he likes it ... we'll see what happens :)

I guess he can do the same if he doesn't like Q4 as well. :D

Well that's the problem, if you play too much of one thing you convince yourself everything else is crap because it's what you're used to.

TBH something q3 and Ztn3tourney 1 is probably a timeless classic as is some of the qw and q2 stuff, but it would be so good if everyone gave q4 a serious shot.

Best qw players, vs best q2 playrs, vs best q3 players and then vs the new blood who have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for a new duel game that they can play from the start.
I'm really confident q4 will be more than worthy enough to warrant moving on.
If it is not I'm done with FPS gaming, cuz I want new maps, new players, new things to learn and a new atmosphere.
Only q4 has the potential to do that, so I just hope people give it a real shot based on its merits, insteads of running back to what they are used to becaseu they're getting owned.

Q3 was widely regarded by many as being as close to the "perfect" duel Fps game there was.
All that was ever needed for q3 was....

I think q4 will have all of this, therefore I'm not too bothered.
And for those moaning q3 was too slow, it is actually a bit faster than Vq3 but slower than CPMA.
If you ask me tehy've tried to please everyone with the MP aspect of this, I just think it's gonna be so huge.
Would be a shame for peopel to trick themselves into not liking it.
Everyone who has seen it has been positive and many of those I trust cuz they know what they're talking about.

q2 rail is very different from q3 rail
same goes for the hitboxes and the models

you will rarely see accuracies above 50% in a q2 game while it's common in top q3 games, and if you don't believe me.. just ask to some q3 players who were also good in q2 just like KingpiN or zyz for instance.
They both are extremely good railers and you won't see many q2 demos of them with accuracies above 45-50%

now if you find it "boring", that's your right but don't judge a whole scene that obviously you don't know shit about just by watching one (sucky) game.

there are still many oldschool players left in q2, most of the best scandinavians and polish players are there almost since the release and they were already in the top back when the scene was bigger... still Purri beats them.

I think purri played alongside zyz and stelam in unmatched, so that should be an indication of how good he was, and is in Quake 2.

There is one thing i hope to see added to Quake 4 though, and that is the ability to drop ammo and weapons for your teammates. Really gives the game an extra edge, and also makes ammo a much more important factor

And removes proper weapon control.

You can't compare the rail in Q2 to the rail in Q3 ...
It's mord hard to hit the opponent in Q2 ...
because the rail takes slightly more time for the shot and
the movement of the opponent in Q2 is more complex (bunnyhopping and doublejumping don''t exist in Q3A)...
Also this level "match1" is not really suited for rail ...
because it's a very close level (rail is better suited for distance) and the enemy gets a rocket launcher or a chaingun really fast ... especially being attacked by the chaingun makes it really difficult to hit ... another factor is that at a certain point, where score and the result of the game are quite evident, purri didn't play anymore 100 % ...

purri's an amazing player but these games were far too one sided to be called legendary. purri needs some opponents.

The one-sidedness is what makes them legendary.

Everyone has been so wrapped up in quake3 and such the past few years, you've never heard anything from the quake2 community, and it's just so different there (apparently, I'm guilty myself for not paying attention). I mean these guys just come out of nowhere, no one's ever heard of them, and they just display amazing, amazing skill. Saying it's not impressive is like downplaying the girls tourney for them being female: just ignorant.

For most games there's quite a few top contenders, but in q2 purri's just been playing for so long and for so well he's just in his own league really. I imagine this match will be a long-standing salute to both quake2 and him as a player (as I'm sure the game won't be revived from retro status, or anything), which he is well-deserving of.

At least that's how I perceive it. ;)

Also for those not familiar with Quake 2, it is not unusual for game scores to be one-sided even between two good players.

Map control is very powerful in Quake 2 - much more so than in games such as Q3 (where you spawn with a reasonably useful weapon.) For example, you can refer to oldschool q2 tourney games such as Thresh vs Immortal on ptrip where Thresh wins 45-0. Although Thresh was the superior player, Immy wasn't as horribly inferior as the score might suggest.

Yeah, it's definately that way due to the amount of things to be able to control (weapons too, whereas weaponrespawn in q3 removed that), and how easy it is to kill a freshly spawned.

Basically a lot closer to quake1 (rather than quake3, even if the weapons are more similar to q3), which ALWAYS has *outrageous* scores.

I think it is the second. The only nice thing in that tournament was the girls themselves (and we all like that), but their gameplay was very average for being nice imo. I mean that would prefare to download and see demos from other players than from the girls in quakeon.

yea..i reminded me of dm4 as well. Fun to watch, but his opponent wasnt good enough. Btw, is this some kind of mod or is this how most Q2 players tweak the game? Brightskins, new sounds and such..

Every q2 players nowadays uses pakfiles with brightskins and more visible other stuff. match1, the map that was played, was made by ID a few months after Q2 was released. They made it like dm4 because it was so succesful.

As mentioned (above) Quake2 players usually use different pak-files to change textures, colours an such. Sometimes it's to change the cosmetic look of maps you have played 100.000 times, sometimes it's for a nice "feature" (like that blue crosshair and the "stars" bullets make on impact).

The pak-files I used for this movie is a mix of my own regular pak (which is a mix from 10-15 paks I got from other players) and a new with new (cooler looking ?) skins to highten the visibility.

The map name is Reckless Abandon and was made by ParadoX of Ritual ent. if I remember correctly :), was a fun map back then, I liked it a lot.

EDIT: It was made by id software tho :).

Q2 is surely a great game and it's a nice match, but doesn't look that exciting , just because it's absolutely one-sided. Great job by purri, but I've seen better ones :p

Purri was the best player at the event and deserved to win it all. I have nothing but respect for him - props!

Per comment #2, I do think it would have been interesting if more european players had traveled over. The euro Quake 2 community is far more active than the american community. Q2 hasn't been played competitively over here for several years, and I do suspect that the other top euro duelers would have done very well in the tourney. Of course, since they didn't come over, we'll never know. :)

I was a bit disappointed when match1 was randomly drawn for the championship game. It is my worst map (I hadn't played it prior to bootcamping with Purri), and I would have liked to have had a closer game for the finals match.

But I have no complaints, and I'm obviously happy with my performance at Quakecon. :)

Even my wife (she really couldnt care less about quake and online gaming) got geared up when I told her about purri's trip. We both hoped for a "Philadelphia bootcamp buddies" finals.
She was really dissapointed when you got knocked out of the winners bracket, but she cheered up when I told her about the DE rules.

Saturday was really funny. Me reporting the progress and both of us cheering as the results was to our liking. All of our respect to you for taking care of purri and helping him out with PC and stuff.

Yeah, sucky pak, annoying sounds, ugly skins etc, wish it'd had been done with base pak.

Honestly, I can't please all with my choice of pak. Too bad you don't like it but that's life to ya ... for everything you like you can bet there's someone else that hates.

I tried at first to make it with no paks except default base paks since that's the way the tournament was played. I discarded that experiment and stuck with the paks I had. My prerogative as "producer" ;)

Just out of curiosity, can you please point out any quake2 movie that uses only base paks or a pak that's fits your taste ?

I am open to new ideas/input and I'm always looking for new ways of doing things. Your ideas on how a Quake2 should look just may be the ticket and I promise to look into your suggestions.
I can't promise I'll do as you suggest, but there is a posibility :D

I've never really played q2 with anything other than base pak's, but the base pak's have all the cool feeling imo. I'd just go with base paks. I haven't watched many quake 2 movies at all. Going with the base paks for this one is especially good because they played it with the base paks like you said. While that pak had some very useful gfx and sounds for playing with, they don't look as good or give the viewer as much immersion imo. Either use a pak that sets out to enhance the look of q2, or the base pak, a game looking good in a movie doesn't hurt at all.

In retrospect I could have used a better pak (and some more stuff I would love to change) but what can I do now. The movie is out and there is no sense in being regretful. I try to learn from my mistakes and make a better movie the next time.

I don't know what immersion means so I can't judge that part. The problem with making a quake2 movie is IMHO that with only base paks it's darn right UGLY.
Almost ALL quake2 movies uses paks to enhance the looks thus making it "good looking".
Here is the contradiction in our views. You think Quake2 looks good with no extras added and my standpoint is the opposite.

I will probably never make a movie without extra paks except for experimental purposes ... or as a part of a movie. So I thought I did exactly what you're telling me use a pak that sets out to enhance the look of q2. Seems my effort to enhance the look of quake2 was a complete failure in your eyes. Guess we have to live with that ;)

As for the sounds. I lowered the demo sound level to under 40% and raised the radio shoutcast volume. Not much of "my pak sounds" can come thru the shoutcast IMHO, but the parts that DO leak out is one of the things I'd love to change :)

I suggest you re-install Q2 and upgrade to the latest R1Q2 client and watch the demos. There's a truckload of nice demos to download on the internet.

That was posted on GGL by nex.hr and it shows Purri aiming well, so check it out..... 39% accuracy on one of them iirc, and thats online.
Its just the speed of his aiming.... he doesnt really set up shots he just seems to pop them off.

The problem is that a 1.2 MB demo turns out to be a +400MB video monster. I don't expect there will be more than a few movies made of whole games.
There is a truckload of quake2 movies but they are more of a highlite nature. Much more fun to make as well :)

Hehe, that was a lost battle so I just used FRAPS to get the basic working material. I hope conversions from protocol 35 to 34 will be "invented" so it's possible to do some editing and recams of the actual demo.
R1CH will most probably fix that feature in the future

Just had to drop in to tell you some facts about q2.

The ones who havent been very familiar to q2 until now must think that Purri is like easily the best player out there, thanks to all the hype. It is not at all true. I suppose you could say he was the best some years ago and hes reputation is built on performances during those couple years. However the competition at the very top has increased ever since. Purri is surely in top10 and when in good form he's surely in top5 or even top3. Never top 1 though cause there aint such a thing. There are a bunch of equally skilled players in Sweden, Finland and Poland who can sometimes be better, sometimes worse than Purri. Some players are better at some things whereas Purri has his strong points in some other map/game situation. When Purri is on fire he might have the best rail for example but some players are better with other weapons. In 4on4 teamplay he might be the best in dm1 water pos when his rail is on and in dm3 rail too(perhaps shared with provi). However other players own in other areas. If we look at 3 major duel tournaments where Purri has participated in the last couple years he has won the european duel league, 4th in Invitational and 2nd in Scandinavian duel tournament.
The most recent EDL he didnt participate.

Someone said that Purri's accuracy aint all that impressive compared to the elite q3 players. Well theyre right, his accuracy doesnt compare but its a different game ffs! =) In q2 you have 50ms built in lag in the rail and hitboxes/movement/netcode are all a bit different compared to q3. However there's MUCH better online demos out there with higher accuracy and generally better gameplay and im not talking about Purri alone. Playing with baseq2 really is different from the settings q2 players are used to nowadays.

Then to the matter for which i bothered writing in the first place. I have heard people saying they dont like q2 because its too slow compared to q3. It's mostly because when q2 was hot nobody knew how to strafe jump properly. If you try q2 now you might think the same cause you have to do adjust your monitor hz and cl_maxfps in order to get the movement going. Long weapon switch times and weak starting weapon might also confuse you to think it's slow. OH the rl is slower too, but it more than compensates that with the big splash so i enjoy q2 rl compared to q3 rl =) You have perhaps heard of players like Thresh, Shub etc and think that their gameplay is way slower compared to q3 players. Of course it is because nowadays every half-decent player is more skilled than Thresh or even Shub. Of course it aint very interesting to watch those old schoolers play, any noob who has played q2 half a year versus is better nowadays. Go watch players like provi for example and you wont think q2 is slow anymore. TBH movement in q2 is a alot faster imo.

thresh played with an older version of Q2, whereas many tricks weren't possible ... thats why it was slower ...
But the games of the first EDL ...
they are not much worse than the new demos ...
and if you look at them, they are played like 5-6 years ago ...
tbh Thresh, Immortal or Shub, in my oppinion are as good in rail as Purri (I think Immortal was even better) ... but thats only because they played the game only for one or two years ... if they played it for 4 to 5 years like Purri, they would be even better ..
tbh many good players with talent don't play outdated games like Q2 and faded away after the release of Q3A ...
There are some more Trickjumps nowadays ... but these tricks ... they don't help that much it's still aim and strategy that count ... and tbh Immortal, would have easily outplayed Purri ...
his rail is as strong as Purri's ... but he his RL and Chaingun are much better ... but let's stop with theorys ... let's get to the point ....

I guess you haven't seen purri vs shub in 2002.? no disrespect to old school q2 legends but they wouldn't stand a chance vs any div1 player today.

Shub wasn't in shape and played just for fun or not really fun, it was probably moreover that everyone of the new q2 communtiy begged to him to play, he himself being the best player in europe in q2s greatest time ...
there are reasons for giving up a game ...
and really if you restart to play game, it is more a sort of nostalgic feeling than getting real fun because of playing the game ... it's just over,
and these nostalgic feelings that resulted of an naive idealistic perspective
will fade away after facing reality and it's just over for sure then.
additionally, the only one who is motivated in such a match, is someone from the new generation, that didn't get that much fame as the old generation, because Q2 was not anymore the top game in their playing time ...

here's my take on all this as someone who has been around the q2 scene for quite some time:

purri is a good player, no doubt about that...

the european scene has quite a few good players...

however, most of the top gamers left q2 when q3 came out, and most of these players would probably be able to tear alot of the 'top' q2 players up had they been playing the same amount of time. IMO the level of skill is directly attributed to the amount of players playing the game.

Sure, alot of euros would have been able to place well in the tourney, however there are alot of americans that would have placed well too. The people that showed up at qcon for quake2 was rather limited.

And sorry, but match1 is not a hated map, and never was. Match1 has always been a great map, far better than maps like dm2 for 1vs1, and was always much more popular until recently.

And 1 more thing, sorry euros, but the q2 scene is not as active as you like to tell yourselves.

Moreover, if you take a look at the best duelers and the best tdm teams atm:

duelers (random names): Scooby, Damiah, Lucas, Assasin, Provi, Mikkoh, Purri, Odium, Syanid, ...

All those players are OLDSCHOOL like the ones you call the top q2 players who left for q3. All of them were already good back then.

Now for the TDM teams: Wizards, sYnth, 2.0 are the top in Europe.

Wizards and 2.0 are the two oldest finnish clans, their players are there since the release of the game.. and guess what? They were already at the top in the past.
sYnth is a clan consisting of all the old Polish Q2 players who were already good back then, with less good connex though.

For sure players like Shub, Blue, Thresh, Immortal, Makaveli etc. would have become top players like them if they had kept playing.

Have you already tried to play a QW game lately? The scene is also small but the players out there are true machines. It's the same in Q2 and that's why nobody want to play that game anymore, beginners end up being raped even by players who are considered as "noobs" by the community

Some of the players Gravgon mentioned weren't at the top when the oldschool left to play q3 but the reasons are quite obvious: too young age and too shitty comp/connection. If Thresh had played would he destroy these players now?
I really don't think so though of course it's possible. Some of the oldschoolers might be good had they continued with q2 but some wouldnt.
You just really can't compare.

Not quite. With larger player base its a little more likely that theres more talented players but look at it this way: cs has the most players but other games' player base combined must be bigger so its more likely that the most talented player plays some other game than cs :P Using your logic the most talented athletes would be football (guess its soccer for you) players right? :)

This pretty much proves that anything based on dm4 is a bad idea in competitive play :D
