Where is K9-quaint to explain this....it is his official penance to do that everytime when this comes up.
Yes, a very fun demo....one of those things that had everything been done per normal it would just be another demo lost to history...however that is not what happened. The short version (Quaint should have the long version...by now I think he just cuts and pastes it from a stored text file) is that a certain K9 member had changed the settings on the server just before the match was to begin.
None of the players knew this of course, but none of the armor and health would respawn and the weapons were on weapons stay (or at least would respawn). Now everyone has been playing the mob mentality of quake3 team dm for so long that most have forgotten there was a time where a team would divy up the map into zones and assign a person to cover it.
Anyway, on with the story.... 4v1? cakewalk..right? Dare I say...even a tad overconfidence crept into the playing as we sloppily set up our zones and went about our S.O.P. for jail3. The problem was, there were just not a lot of targets out there when one team is down 3 guys. Oh, did I mention that Immortal doesn't quite suck when it comes to quake 2? Granted, at the time he was...I think 5 years old, but he was a prodigy under thresh or something. I still remember my 42 to -3 beat down by him at CPL frag2, and I finished tied for 7th-8th place.
Anyway, I digress lets get back on the topic. One thing about zones is that it predominatly is a lot of little 1v1 action, except stacked in favor of the person controlling the zone as they have all the armor/health and weapons. Now it has been a while since I have seen this demo and I'm relying on my old memory, but at some point Immy got a weapon. How this happened, I don't know, but I blame Quaint for secretly directing him to the rail gun. Normally getting tagged with a rail is not that big a deal, it happens to me ALL THE TIME. Sure, usually I die but those times I don't I can go get more armor and health and voila! I am back to peak fighting condition. ....except this time, none of the armor and health would respawn but nobody is really figuring this out until later in the match as the chaos and hilarity ensues. Chaos being me in a zone doing the 1v1 cha-cha against Immy with a rail and the hilarity has he gets a +1 to the score and goes onto the next area.
Suffice to say, at some point early in the match everything but the weapons were gone and walking around with just 100 health (yes..there was a time where one would spawn back in at just 100 health, no 25 extra health death bonus) against someone who had a tendency to hit with his rail is not a good thing. I don't remember how the score was going, I do remember it being close and once we figured out (a bit) that something was awry we started to group together.
Immy had 1 gun and 4 targets, we had 4 guns and 1 target. Quality versus quantity.
Once one side got up, they would run off and try to protect the lead. However, when we would get up there are only so many places 4 guys can go..not like we all can hide under the stairs. When Immy would get up, there were only about 4396 places he could be and we would have to methodically sweep every room to find him. Usually we "found" him by reading the console "[insert various abuse name here] was railed by Immortal", and the fervent cry of "**ck, he is over here" from the computer next to me. Once we did kill him, it was a race to get back to the rail(s) and cover them as he would randomly respawn back in and head straight for them. This would see saw back and forth until the end at the 20 minute mark.
Anyway, again..K9-Quaint has the long version, go bug him.
Please post some Clan Deathrow demos from QIL3. It was a Quake 3 event. They were available on esreality once, would be nice if someone post them again.
I installed q2 to watch some of these demos, so I only have the basic stuff with r1q2. I got the jail3 map but theres no textures on it when i play demo. How can I sort this out?
i remember being completely taken over by q2. q1 (netquake right?) was limited to dorm 8 player hub play as our lowly college offered only dialup. but q2 lured me into the demo world and this immy demo is up there with the other gem, immy vs sniper.
i suppose in q3 terms it would be like that fatality pummel shakedown of 3(?) opponents in some clan match (pot hinders such finer points).
thanks for the commentary wiseguy, please up any old demo lying around. i'd still give a first born to catch the rumored thresh vs maka handnade only match. in which mr. t wins decisively i've heard
Me and Hakeem lived in San Diego for a while and had a half-hearted attempt at forming a Clan 9 US division with the old DR guys from California and few other cool guys. Unholy was living in our house, and we went up to San Francisco every so often to practice with the rest - Makaveli, Immortal, Vise (wombat's bro, flew in from Chicago), and another guy that was very cool but I forget his name now. But we sucked at practicing and everyone seemed to smoke too much weed to get anything done. Immortal was playing way too much Everquest at the time to get really good (he was good but he could have been awesome at q3). After the XSR company folded it all kinda disappeared. I went back to the UK. Hakeem and Unholy stayed in LA to work for GGL. With the connection to GGL they still got hyped a bit for a few years but I guess they went back to real life in the end.
Someone flushed a toilet before leaving for one of the trips to San Francisco, and it continued filling for a week flooding the whole top floor, destroying the floor and the whole ground-floor ceiling. This was all just before I arrived so I came to our luxury house after it was destroyed :/.
That dude had a beast of a rail, best map was t4 i believe.. everyone was ranting and raving about him... pre babbages and during the event. But then a new star was born that event (ZeRo4) :)
I just remembered there's a demo somewhere of c3 taking on a whole team of K9 on q3dm6, sorta like this demo. I'm pretty sure he owned them and won also.
i remember that demo, still have it. according to the file it was recorded in september 2000. he took on "K9-Alcazar", "soap" and "K9-R'lyeh" and eventually beat them.
having just scanned my hdd i found some newer demos of c3, the latest one is from early 2001, where he's taking a beating from blokey on t4.
Probably went to school... but c3 never came to practice, I'm thinking of another guy who was Hawian and we used to LAN at his house in San Francisco. He wasn't a dueller so most people won't have heard of him but he was great in TDM.
