it's rubbish. none of the oldest people ever, to date, relied on the medical profession to extend their lives. infact i'd be amazed if most of the oldest people ever went to the doctors at all, or went for a regular check up.

Well .. It's not pro-med help but i'd say it shows that you can alter how long you live of what you do. Besides the first people that really has much info and technology to try this is around 50 now, so we have to wait and see and until that belive/doubt or say it's rubbish(doubt?) :)

i've done quite a lot of personal research on why certain people live so long and here is my very basic conclusion to living longer.

yeast free diet. why do japanese live so long? because tradional japanese diets don't consist of yeast. article here. also this may explain why low calorie intake extends life and a mediterranean diet does, less yeast.

antioxidants and/or circulation. look at all the oldest people ever and they have some antioxidant(often with every meal and usually a drink) to help their circulation. fruit juice, coffee, milk (not a antioxidant really, but has been shown to be good for circulation), dark chocolate/cocoa, green tea, red wine etc. and of course excercise, just not to much.

iron. iron is especially needed in old age, it's difficult to explain, but i really believe iron is vital to living long.

according to the antioxidant and yeast article, antioxidants can increase life by 20% and a yeast free life by 50%. and the average lifespan is about 77-81. even if the percentages aren't very accurate, you have a huge increase in lifespan. anyway, the key factor i believe is yeast.

i know, i read a whole book about it :P

well it shows they're clueless, they go on about fish extending life.

also most people die suddenly anyway, they don't know it's coming. how can they fix a problem which they don't know exists. i'm sure it's possible to extend peoples lifespan thru genetics like that mouse they geneticly engineered to not produce insulin (called yoda i believe). but even then it only lived (i think) 2 times as long, which in ratio with humans would be no where near 1000 years. and the mouse was so cold and small it had to be kept warm via heating and another normal mouse, in the real world, a human just wouldn't be able to live like that very well. why is this guy working at cambridge? he's an idiot. unless he's doing just so he can get attention, money, promotion, sponsors etc.

it also shows that there may not be special genes that make you live longer or shorter than others.

I highly doubt this is possible, especially I doubt you will be able to keep people alive and also young. It's amazing what crazy stuff scientists work on and find every day, but altogether we know jack shit about nature and the universe, and this includes us humans too.

I know how little we know about the human body, but the rate at wich we are accelerating the technology progress is just so dazzeling that i can't see any limit to what we can do in the not-too-distant-future.. That's what keeps my mind racing :)

What some people get wrong at least when i try to talk to them is that they think; "i don't wanna be like a 90yo forever" .. But if you have the tech to live forever you also have the tech to stop aging, so you can be 30-40 until you die :)

i don't because no one has ever lived to 500 years or 250 years, let alone 1000 years.

because the brain degenerates with age and you can't replace it. i'm sure they're genes perhaps you can change, to slow the degeneration down, but still a bit of a long shot. to get even close to a 1000 years, you'd have to genetically engineer someone from birth and they'd probably look like a child all their life, because the moment we hit puberty, we age (because of hormones, insulin or something).

True, that's where we need to get into really hightech stuff i can't even imagine, but imagine will be there in 150-400 whatever-years :)

If they don't hit puberty they would continue to grow, so they would still die from becoming too big to support their own body :P

?? You grow the most pre-puberty so your arguement is flawed. (Think how small a baby is to say, a 9 year old boy, it's 1000% growth, the difference between a 9 year old and a 29 year old is at most 300%, most likely not even near that)

no they wouldn't, they wouldn't grow bigger than an average 10 year old because they've done similar experiments with mice. they wouldn't live a 1000 years but i'm guessing 200-300 years.

mice <> men. You could not really say what will happen when you remove one important part of development, for example, you may have the mind of a 10 year old forever, you will be weak so manual labour will be harder, and since everyone would want to live so long, there would be no "adults"

i'm not saying they wouldn't turn into adults, but the hormones that we develop during adulthood, need to be taken away to prevent aging. i think hormones also relate to insulin. for example a adult geneticly altered male (in this way), would probably not grow facial hair. i'm not sure on the details, but you get the idea. i mean when we hit puberty, we have a rush of hormones which also course aging, these hormones cause a growth spurt. take them away and we won't age as fast, but we also won't get that growth we get at puberty.

oh and i could be completely wrong(especially about the details), but one thing i'm sure of is that they would take on a child appereance as an adult.

even if people were able to live till a thousand years, it wouldnt be long before that became normal, then scientists would keep pushing and pushing for more years, then massive problems would exist, like people not wanting to die, cryogenic freezing, massive amounts of money would be funded into research and development of living forever. Fucking stupid.

I think when we live to be 1000 we are on the point when random shit that happens is the only reason you'd die. People already do not want to die. People already wanna freeze themselfs. IF you had taken the time to read the book of Genesis and a little beyond then you'd realise that God originally made man live for a lot longer than we currently can be expected to live for, yet because man sinned he said, and its quoted in the Bible, that man will live for around 100 years.

What do you think about that? Wouldn't it be a bit upsetting to God if we took what he had done for man and changed it?

Who knows, it could happen, not saying it will, but you can get a fake heart these days, who’s to say what will happen in 50 years?. they need to slow down the body clock or whatever!, We have come along way over the last 100 years, done things that would of seemed impossible 100 years ago, so you got to keep an open mind, there’s no way you can say for sure what will happen.
I’m all for living as long as possible. :p

But life expectancy will defiantly increase whatever happens, if you look at some foreign country’s the average life expectancy is something like 30 years. We have upped that to 80-100 years with science, healthcare, standard of living, so why not further?. At the very least we'll get better at curing diseases, and so on. And cancers, and other things kill a lot of people before they die naturally.

If he’s correct we should all be on esreality in the year 2400+. Patience! we'll see:).
