Everyone's like, omg grubby lost, and yes he did, but the WC3 tournament was really bad... A few players had network problems, network just dropping out during a match, and those things are really mindbreakers. While Grubby played the 2nd map against ToD, it suddenly became sunny and the sun was shining in his face (ToD was faced the other way), and we all know how annoying sun can be when playing. There were no sun blockers on the window or anything, terribly annoying. All the players were pretty pissed off on how the tournament was running, because so many things were just messed up.
Not trying to defend Grubby here (ok a bit, he's dutch :), but people need to realize that bad tournaments do give weird results. Another example, team9 winning CPL UK (CS network was laggy, and they played on TFTs). People don't see what is going on at those events and even some small stuff that no spectator would care about can piss the actual competitors off pretty bad, from my own experience...
we are both right you know.. it's both esports and eurocup.. but, i'm just saying there should be some form of standard among organizers and admins when it comes to such things nowdays.. having network problems is so pre year 2000 and having the sun in your face while playing is totally "what where you thinking, admins?" :)
the eurocup finals have been around for a while and they should know these things.. and the TFT-thing is just too optimistic.. why can't someone tell them to do some research and they'll see that CRT's are far more popular and suitable for fps-gaming :x
ofcourse not, sponsors want to promote their new stuff.. SamSung has promoted their 4 ms TFT screens. (The same ones at WCG NL and WCG DE) Its logically they bring out money for that.
I agree with you. We can't see all the circumstances under which those matches were played. But still... you need more than a little sun to take down Grubby and ToD. So you have to respect HoTs performance too, he's a great player when it comes to LAN tournaments.
It really is time for some standard in tournament-gaming environments. One should be able to take such results for granted without having to question the circumstances.
Agreed, except on the team 9 issue. NiP and team 9 had exactly the same problems (network, tft's) so you can either bitch about it or set your mind on the game, especialy when you know the opposite team has the same issues.
Ofcourse it's a whole different ballgame when only one player is having hardware/sun/network problems and the other one is sitting comfortable in his chair and the mind fully set on the game. Thats clearly a disadvantage ..
Some players can adapt better to crappier situations. But that does not make that one the better player, in my opinion. The better player is the one who performs the best under the perfect circumstance, as in, a perfectly (or at least a good) ran tournament.
Though I agree some things could've gone better, it's not like you always have the perfect circumstances... And if you can only play better than everyone else if everything is perfect, that's not really credible. It's the same as football players complaining about the grass, or the rain; of course you want the best possible, but it's not always perfect but you don't let that ruin your game.
There is a difference between annoying computers, admins, sun in your eyes, things that should not happen and football players whining about the rain/grass. They can expect that and train under those circumstances. It can happen, the thing that I mentioned in the beginning should just not happen.
What I am also saying is, is that every tournament should have the perfect setting. We're in the year 2005, these kind of events have been run for more than 5 years, and for example this event still had noob problems they had 5 years ago...
I agree with Sander. Is it really all that hard to put blinds on the windows during the day or something? Is it really hard to get a stable LAN network to run properly on a very network friendly WinXP setup? Is it REALLY all that hard to get the same amount of CRTs, which are cheaper btw, than TFTs? I agree that you can't always have it perfect but these are just little things that should be expected of organizers. Why do you think there was no flash photography at ESWC this year? This is also why the pictures turned out dark, they didn;t have a ton of sunlight coming in. It's just simple stuff that's easy to control. There's no good reason that the admins can't do these things.
Getting CRT's is actually harder than you think. Sponsors are not interested in them, where are you gonna stall CRT's when a tournament is over, transporting them is hard, etc... TFT's are alot easier, too bad they are bad for FPS gaming.
Okay, but was the cpl uk outcome such a surprise? It was their first chance to make fame and name in the world (or cs-world :) and in my opinion thats what made the difference. Both teams had the same crap going on, but team 9 just wanted it a bit more ..
yes and no. the winner never stays at #1 for long in cs anymore. be it moneysystem, random shuffling of players amongst teams, random gameplay or just tft... who cares. but very good in a sense, any top15(?) team has the potentional to get #1. sponsors are then not focusing on just one team taking it all home anymore.
