Pro gaming is a young mans game which means that most jack in education to commit for to the game, the competition is so tough many fail.
On top of that there are RSI problems which will happen and the prizes and lack of sponsorship make it worthwhile only for a handful of people.
Just like poker players a great er % of players fail, therefore you can arguably conclude that it's goign to cause problems for the majority of players.

As for poker, most people need a job in life to give them direction and something to do. I know what it's like to sit around the house all day and it drives me nuts.
If someone said your new job for the rest of your life is sitting in front of a pc and relying on having to make money from poker to pay the bills and stuff it would be so bad.

I don't doubt you can make money from playing poker and I don't doubt there is skill involved, I just think it's bad to want to rely on playing a game of poker to make ends meet.

Sitting infront of my pc all day long? I tell you what. One day in May this year I was sitting at my desk as usual, working 9-5 for Telia Sonera. That is sitting infront of a pc all fuckin day long. It was a quite shitty job but most people would consider it way better than flippin' burgers at McDonalds. I made about $1800 a month so it's not a well paid job. On my spare time I was building up my bankroll just for the fun of it, I didn't really had any intentions of playing poker for a living. Still I was asking myself "what am I doing here anyway? Is it that I enjoy my work? No. Is this what I want do with the rest of my life? Hell no".

While making up my mind about what I really would like to do with my life, one month later I decided to quit my job. At this time I played no more than 2-3 hours/day, 5-7 days/week. I made more than two times my montly salary. That is, I spend 2-3h a day infront of my pc instead of 8 hours being dissatisfied with the tasks and the job in general. Not to mention the measly amount of sparetime I had.

So please, try convince me that working at McDonalds is way better than making a living out of poker, if you've got that it takes to do it. It's not like I'm gonna play poker for the rest of my life, not for a living at least. I can get into like any university I want if I feel like studying again but I'm not gonna take some shitty jobs just for the sake of it. So go ahead and flip those burgers while I steal those pots.

Lets not forget that to the majority who do sit down and play it's a recreational game. The losers make too many mistakes which comes down to lack of knowledge. Losing players usually don't care because they're just playing for fun, or they're too arrogant/impatient to learn how to play a more correct game. I remember reading a mad Mike Caro article about some new wannabe pro's getting their game right purely by chance and winning. Then they start losing and they change their game approach and get it all wrong until they give up. A statistic of for every pro there are 10 failed. Although failed doesn't mean anything especially bad. Just that they didn't succeed after trying for maybe 40 hours total and giving up. Not much lost, you've gotta try to do what you want without being afraid sometimes.

I will go out on a limb here and try to show you what youre way of thinking truly represents, since i do not think you have stopped to think further than poker in specific.

Your pattern of thinking basically states that it is unwise to choose a profession in which you have no financial security. Now this clearly has numerous paralells , music, actors , professional athletes , even chess players and numerous other examples.

Which brings us to the point of what our world would look like if everyone had your mentality . The mainstream world would have never been introduced to grunge rock if the late kurt cobain hadnt pursued his ambition even if at that time it was a huge risk finance wise. Amazing actors like al pacino wouldve never seen the light of day since coming to hollywood with nothing more than a suitcase full of clothes is clearly not a sound financial plan.

Did these individuals contribute something to society? A classical music fan or a movie hater would beg to differ. All they did was choose a path that would enable them to wake up and look at themselves in the mirror every morning without having to think 'why did i never try and pursue my dreams'.

The people defending poker here do not have the specific ambition to sit behind a pc and grind out a living, they most likely aspire to be professionals travelling the world , appearing on television, perhaps even write a poker book someday.

All sorts people people get sucked into the whole poker thing and many, far more come out of the game sore than the winners you talk about.
If someone has an addiction then it could be argued that they are not in control. gambling and especially internet gambling is actually a really, really big problem.
Before you needed to go to a casino or a bookies to have a flutter, now you simply turn out your computer, and you're not even playing with real money.
It comes out of your account, so it's easier for a lot of people to get carried away and lose money they can't afford. Yes it's their problem, but that's a crappy outlook on life. Not everyone is smart, I admit poker requires good reading skills etc, not everyone has them but it can take years for people to finally admit defeat at a game of poker, by which time they might consider themselves broke, no skills, and face the prospect of wroking some crappy low paid job or getting money and getting back into the game.

Anyway I don't care anymore, I can't even play poker and I'm glad I can't as I might well be tempted to go for it too, but I still say its a very danagerous to play on a fulltime basis, you risk losing out on so much and ultimately you risk losing it all if you have a period where you get greedy. Everyone makes mistakes and it's a well known fact that many gamblers and poker players go bust many many times before they reach the top.

the point was that due to the potential efficiency of poker it in fact allows me to do the very opposite of what you say it does: free up time & resources for me to pursue other worthwhile avenues in life that will give me those richer life experiences that you speak so highly of, rather than "sit in a room all day 'busting my ass' to make ends meet not gaining life experience" like you say-- which is exactly what i would be doing if i was trying to hold down a regular 'steady' office job 40-50 hours a week. There are already a lot of alternative energy sources atm (seen that small reactor that runs with 25% petrol or vegetal oil, and 75% of whatever liquid u can find? salted water, coca-cola, etc). It just doesnt bring enough money to governments and big companies, so they're carrying on with petrol (in france, about 80% of the gas prices are taxes).
Once oil won't be available anymore, those big companies will put enough money in research departments to make up new engines with new energies, and they will sell that energy a very good price (for them, ofc). They're just waiting for oil to be "depleted".

Do you know how much it costs to create a new engine? a LOT. That's why most of today's engines on cars are just old ones (there are still a lot of engines bases that have been created in the 80s), with new features: double headcam shafts, 4 or 5 valves per cylinder instead of 2, diesel 1.9L's turned into brand new engines just by adding a turbo, direct injection systems, intercoolers, and a better cooling... And they sell those at gold price.

I have every faith in the fact that there will not be sufficient alternative energy available by the time the sources run out, energy consumption will have seen a massive increase by that time compared to now and unless they start working on it right now theres no chance of catching up

And starting right now just isnt gonna happen , no profit in it and the current bigshots wont be around anyway to see the day oil depletes so why bother is their mindset, and politics cannot even agree over something relatively trivial as contuining to use nuclear power.

That was the very first time we played. I needed to do the same thing when I started q3 a few weeks ago, but that takes seconds. We played quite a few games since then. You knew exactly how to play, and knew your way around. I doubt that was from a "few" games. Plus I saw you on ASE in 2004 from about August, until the time CPL doomed us with PK WT announcement (October/ish) (sorry PK community!)
Rememerb when all the CPL PK players were playing doom 3, vo0, Xhep, Aim, Ztrider etc.

- poker software, seems like a no-brainer : probable cost anywhere from 1 - 10 million depending on licensing - own production. Writing a from-scratch massive client-server program including security, anti fraud, anti cheats is not a trivial task to even the most talentend development team

- Site hardware costs + rent for site infrastructure, power usage and all the utilities not too mention an SLA for 99.998 % uptime : Your regular dual xenon server platform for a medium business will crumble like a cookie under the strain of 100.000 simultaneous users. And lets not forget the dbase - mysql servers with very likely custom software etc etc. probably cost , 10 million probably is skimping a bit., the SLA for this on an island in the middle of nowhere probably costs that much alone.

- Bandwith : now this is where it really starts to sting, were talking dedicated 100 gbit line to the same primitve island with the best possible routing to everywhere, that baby will set you back slightly more than your basic dsl. Potential cost : priceless basically

- employees , helpdesk, lawyers, customer service bla bla bla : a ton more than youre average b&m casino

I'm sure i'm forgetting some other obvious expenses but as is clearly shown, do not be fooled. It costs a ton to run even a small size online poker site, without the very small percentage they ask there wouldnt even be online poker, relying on advertising alone would be pure suicide for 99.99 % of sites

Also, it is technically impossible to 'cheat' an online poker site due to the way its programmed, at the very best a poker bot can be used to play for you, and this is relatively easily spotted

Poker is 100% luck during the course of one single hand and 100% skill during the course of hundreds of thousands of hands. Luck is also the reason why playing poker professionally is possible in the first place. It deceives the bad players into believing they are doing something right even though they are actually throwing away money every hand they mistplay. If poker was a 100% skill game there simply wouldn't be enough bad players to feed the good ones and keep the food cycle alive. This is also why Lakerman is making hundred times more money playing poker than he would ever make by playing video games.

Maybe I should have been more clear. It's impossible to tell who's a better player on the outcome of one single hand.

I feel bad (hypocritical), been playing roulette over the last week with consistent wins everyday, for about 2-3 hours play. At a bookies.
I'm not playing to gamble, I'm playing a numbers game in my head nad a game of math and probability.
I'm doing so to earn some extra money, but it's temptiong cuz I'm making about 200-250 quid for about 2-3 hours play.
And this output has been consistent for nearly a week, the only time i lost, was when I "lost on one day" was when I got greedy, came home, next day went back and won what I lost the day before and a few hundred more by playing tight and really grinding it out.

I never said poker was crap, I just said people need to be careful with it. Yes earning this money is good because I'm only doing part time work ATM until my Visa gets sorted (if at all) but I must admit it's tempting to do this a lot more, than doing computer chores for people for 1/8 of waht I make per hour playing roulette.
I don't even get any satisfaction from the work cuz it's just medial stuff ATM while I'm waiting for something better.

BTW if you ar wondering how I only play at the bookies on the gaming terminals, at a casino I would get busted because it's so obvious what I'm doing and it's very simple technique, based on the Martingale, and whilst I am aware of the pitfalls of using that system, I have managed to reduce the big losses commonly associated with people who Dbl up all the time. I do, but it's more strategic and it really favors the privacy the of betting termnials. I dont do online because it's too easy to play whenever you're bored and traditional casionos would not like my methods.
