Those are the commands for recording a demo.
Demo size is almost the same as Q3 (possibly very slightly larger)

good to hear that q4 does not have the "1 minute demo - 40 gb hdd space gone" feature of d3 ;-)

as far as i know it is possible to use recorddemo (5mins 611mb) and recordNetDemo (about as q3), the later having the disadvantage that you cant record netdemos if you arent playing on an online server. at least thats what some german webpage told me.

Demo recording is included and a 15 minute match came in about the 4 megabyte mark.

Maybe some yankees* want to haul ass down walmart and give us more!

It would be nice to see complete run throughs and some rocket jumps etc.

Oh dear @ humping it up the crates - did they never even watch a demo of someone like shub in q2? As this game is gonna get a lot of attention next year and as the multiplayer is separate from the single, whats the chances of them listening to whinges and adjusting the physics slightly in a point release to at least allow basic stuff like double jumping? Little things add a lot to the game imo...

Nailgun wall climbing = the bolox tho :) Gonna need to make yer own makeshift ladders everywhere by the looks of it cos the guy jumps like my grandad and his bad hip :(

The story I heard it is that Zoid added them deliberately. They might have been a bug initially but I think id released it knowing what it did. It came in one of the patches I think.

Yeah, I think when q2 was released, most people didnt have sufficient fps to do it anyway, so I seriously doubt it was intentional. AFAIK it was a bug, one I'm sure could be legitimately recreated if we all shouted at Raven and iD enough tho, especially with the fixed gametics this time round, we would ALL be able to do it regardless of PC speed :)

Added a whole new dimension to play imo, there was a skill and an artform in just moving around the map quickly and smoothly and tooling up, it wasnt just about the aiming. Sadly quake seems to get "dumbed down" every generation and these little cool tricks disappear :(

They actualy did remove the jumping 'bug' in a q1 patch... it was obliderated by the online scene which never played with the patch because it removed it.
They even had to write a 'unpatch' for the patched game! :p
At least that's what I heard anyways :p
And nowadays the 'bug' is one of the main features to set quake appart of other fps games, and one of the most fun ones :p

self.velocity_z = self.velocity_z + 270

is basically what causes ramp jumping in Q1/2, and with the addition of airstep, doublejumping in Q2. They quite obviously intended it, else they would have just gone with the much simpler

self.velocity_z = 270

for the jump physics, which doesn't cause ramp/doublejumping (like Q3).

Yea, so was I.. the maps and all seemed pretty good at a first look. But now i serously start to doubt that, it looks more like doom3 than quake. I mean - slow rocket, stupid sounds, tight/boring looking maps when you see them in the videos etc etc.

I cant see that it looks like q2. Movement is so different, no dubble jumps, no big strafe jumps, no circle jumps etc. But perhaps its just the pov that sucks. We will find out soon enough =)

and regardless double jumps or not wouldn't make or break ANY game. They are just added touches. what's important here is gameplay and speed/fun factor

In the ctf video he picks up some good speed at 1:55 and it lasts for like 5 secs maybe. I presume that's how good players will be running through maps :)

too "bad" he didn't show us anything of value execpt for the map layout. If I was the one making the video, I would be strafe jumping around and showing some basic tricks just to let people get a clue of how the game physics works etc.

That video of bad vs. rocket is more than embarrassing. I very much doubt the words of someone who clearly is a beginner (movement, aiming) that there is no doublejump or what else not possible.

mate he would certainly look a lot better than those two. Anyone with a degree of experience would have been strafe jumping the maps doing at least basic jumps to items etc. Also the aim and weapon selections were terrible.

but like u say, i am just glad they made the effort to record it and make a movie so that us less fortunates that dont have the game yet, can get a look at it.

might be, i played quake2 since 1997 for almost five years until 2002, was in many big clans and the national team etc, still i wont say anybody is bad or a beginner at a game i have only seen in videos...

but its not about their skill here anyway as I said before, we can all "play hard, go pro" in 2 days :)

Did i see right that you can collect items by jumping over them, actually not "touching" them? like in quakeworld
at the end of the 1o1 vid he jumps over an ammopack at stairs. dunno

it works with hitboxes, so when you jump over things you won't realy pick things up but when they touch the hitbox you will.
So think a cube around your person (a bit larger usualy) and see if the item will touch it. Your hitbox will have to touch it in order to pick it up (at least this is the way it was done in q3 so it will prolly be the way it's done in q4 cuz they left most calculus the same).

Doom 3 used a completely different kind of hitdetection, with per-pixel hitdetection (aka.: the lagfactor)
Anyway, they had to rewrite this part of the Doom 3 engine to allow for use of hitboxes rather than per-pixel hitdetection so that Quake 4 will actually be playable in multiplayer. They might have taken a few hints from the Q3 engine for this, but most of the hitbox-stuff should be new, afaik.

OMFG @ the footstep sound. Please tell me that you can turn it off. It makes the whole game feel like DOOM3.

Off with the player shadows also and the game would 'feel' great.

The technology is not the same as Q3 All you kids whining about not being able to change this and that, it's defferent this time.
Turning off the BUMP MAPS and SPECULAR and possible lowering the texture size will be as close as you'll get. But the days of picmip 5 are long gone.

I think it has a LOT of potential. However:
- There needs to be doublejumps or some faster method of jumping up boxes.
- Rail delay between click and fire needs to me removed
- A few sound changes
- More bouncyness when being hit by rockets

Something like OSP could fix all this and more, we just gotta be patient.

agree with you on everything except for the rail delay, i wish q3's rail would have had one

rail delay is the best thing on q4 to me too. q3 rail accuracy was at 60% in the end and killed the game imho because it wasnt meant to be that high. you could play only with rail like fazz did. q3 was never meant to have a dominant weapon. rail delay makes the railgun a weapon like the other and not THE weapon to grab. good news to me!

Personally I always hated the bounce you got from q1/q3 rockets splash dmg, q2 guy had balls and didnt fly around like a fairy :) I think its most annoying to be caught by a stray rocket, go bouncing up into the air and be fodder for another rocket / rail. In fact in q3 I often find Id rather be hit full in the face with a rocket than by a glancing splash as I'm far less vulnerable afterwards :) (This more applies to mods with many players spamming, not duel of course)

Quake 3 is slowly running out of players, we need Quake 4 to draw more players in :)

Don't look for OSP to fix gameplay problems (preferances).

OSP will never change the core gameplay so dont expect it to, but expect possibly better netcode and visual customization (brightskins, hud)

Hopefully point releases will fix any flawed gamplay aspects and add enough of customization we are used to with OSP so we won't even need it.

I dont see why OSP couldn't change minor gameplay aspects like that ? =/

Why do they have to add double jumping? So the edge is more playable? How about someone just makes some new maps where its not required. Q3 was fine without double jumping.

Q3 had magic fps bugs so you could jump higher, no need for double jump :) 55 77 125 fps etc, wonder if Q4 will have any interesting bugs like this.

new game folks, personally im greatful they've included not only edge (best q2 map and one of the best quake maps ever) but a good weapon set and a mini osp type affair outta the box.

i dont remember seeing raven/id ever saying q4 was gonna be q2 singleplayer with q3 v2 as multiplayer, and thank god it isnt.. it might be appealing to the q3ers whove played years and want to slam newbies or even good players who just didnt whore q3 as much, but unfortunetely nowhere near everyone (including raven/id from a financial standpoint) agree.

im semi biased as i was a q2er, but i played qw and q3 as much if not more in the case of q3.. q3 became stale to a lot of people years ago, so shockingly making a direct clone in q4 mp musn't have been top priority... quake games have been similar to each other at best, it surprises me how anyone persumed q4 was going to be any different.

dont get me wrong, i dont wanna see a crap game, but i dont wanna see q3 with the doom3 engine either like some people here want (and as i said above its quite clear why).

the double jump crying is absoloutely hilarious to me.. the only reason people are whining is purely because of Edge, and believe me id love to see it back as well, but its not game destroying like people would have you think.. edge will survive without double jumping, you might just *gasp* have to play differently or take more time to get that YA/Mega :x

in closing ill return to the first paragraph.. its a new game, any similarities are a bonus, not "what they did right" and everything NOT quake3 = "what they did wrong"..

quake3 was the worse of the quake series though and this looks like more of the same with slower weapons, slower movement & Gene Kelly footsteps

OMFG just paused the movie to type this shit as the footsteps are soooo anoying, sounds like a type writer, probably the worst sound effect of a boot in the history of gaming. What were they thinking.
Apart from that the game looks like it could be fun, and i have a feeling theres more to the movement than what is being shown. looks like turning or timing a jump might produce more speed, cant really say untill i play. back to the typewriter sounds..

Although I agree that the 1v1 movie was painful to watch, I thank the guys who recorded it, uploaded it, and probably f*cked up their bandwidth just for people to have a glimpse of what the game looks like without shakycam so they could blast the players because of their lack of skill.

Particularly watch some Thresh demos and how he uses the (slower) quake 2 rocket.

i'v seen q2 movies and noone has a impressive airgibb whit rocket.

it was mainly in reference to your "slow and boring" comment and not the airgibs bit. My point was that you can play very skillful and challenging games with a slower rocket.. you just have to alter your play slightly.
Thresh managed to switch between Q1 and Q2 rockets at PGL3 within a few hours, so should you! :)

Besides, different is not necessarily bad. Quake 2 is still my favourite of the quake series (probably because it was the first quake I played) - I'd be very interested to see professional level play of around 3 months time in Quake 4.
I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised..

Valid points but everyone has to remember no matter what Quake 4's faults are, its better than Doom3 and Painkiller so everyone should play it.

Hot. The slow rockets do turn me off a bit, but seeing as I've been more of a UT than a Quake player in the past, they're not something I have too much of a problem with.

Anyhow, all the big problems will be resolved by whatever becomes the main competitive mutator.
