So I've spent alot of time trying to work on these Quake 4 VOD's. I didn't realize the engine was going to be such a pain in the ass. So this particular journal thread is two fold:
1 :: To update folks who have been asking about them where we currently stand
2 :: To get an audience feedback as to what they want to see
TOPIC 1: The biggest problem right now with the VOD's is coming up with a bitrate which allows for an acceptable filesize, while still maintaining a fair quality of video and framerate. The files I recorded today of the Jibo vs. Xatrix match turned out... OK. Actually, in my opinion, they suck. Granted, I'm a huge stickler when it comes to quality, but at the same time, I won't release something that I personally don't approve of or wouldn't watch. Which means that I've got alot more testing to do before perfection is achieved.
I don't expect the Jibo vs. Xatrix match VOD's to be released, because the only way I could achieve the quality I want is to go back and cut up the demos. Since that's extremely time consuming, I'd rather focus the time on the upcoming matches and improving the process that way.
TOPIC 2: I'm hoping folks who read this might answer some questions. Because even though I know what I would personally watch or download, that doesn't mean the entire audience feels the same way. So if you have a few minutes, please answer these in the comments:
a. How big of a file would you download for ONE 15 minute match?
b. Does the actual graphic quality of Quake 4 make a difference in a VOD? (for example, if the VOD was recorded with low textures which eliminates details, would you care?)
c. Would you rather download VOD's on a game by game basis, or a best of 3 series as one file?
d. Do you prefer the gamma and brightness turned up to get a better view of what's happening in-game?
BIG THANKS to anyone who answers these questions!
