The first big U.S. Quake4 tournament ended with an exciting but not surprising finish.

Cooller and

toxic, both Quake3 stars, made it to the finals where they played a total of three maps.

Cooller was victorious on the first map while toxic beat him on the second. Cooler won on blip, the third and final map of the tourney to take home $9,000 in prize money.

This high definition video video shows Cooller and toxic playing blip, the final map of the tourney, along with audio of djWHEAT & trillian from RadioiTG, the awards ceremony, and a post game interview with the runner-up toxic. The video is 1024x720 and runs twenty minutes.

BTW, how did you get around the monitors flickering?
Were they running at 60hz or you capture it at high level?

Pretty sure they were running above 60hz... Wish we could have had in-game Q4 footage, iTG audio, and video of the players, but that will have to wait for another time....

Judging by the look of his face and everything it most definately looks like someone tells him to continue playing, which it is really stupid that it's needed and arrogant of cooller... Still like him and he sounds like he really knows what he's talking about (english aside), but maybe he's a bit too "professional" at times.

And it is so embarrassing to right after that continue listening to trillian talking about how sportsmanlike it is of them/him to "continue playing the game out and enjoying the map", yeah we saw, we saw...

My bad... I didn't realize he'd stopped playing to do anything more than type GG. And I don't think I said it was the sportsmanlike thing to do as much as I said I prefer it to when they quit out of the game.

I'm with some of the other people here who have pointed out that you wouldn't see a player just walk off the court because the game was impossible to win. They play it out, happy or not. Granted, it also means you sometimes change the channel at that point because there is not chance, but you might stick around for the post game interviews and analysis. Right?

Either way, while the action may not be as exciting, the pressure is off... so I keep hoping we'll see some ridiculous moves in the final minutes to keep us entertained.

indeed, CPL ofcourse organises these championships for the big media, and as many spectators as possible (for the sponsors) fun to see some kid mocking his opponent because he's sure of a win, cash in the pocket, so lets not care about sponsors/spectators/organisation/game anymore.
From this motivation nobody should EVER even stop playing for whatever reason. If you want to look pro act pro.

I was quoting John McEnroe. Real professional sports expect good conduct but people love the rivalries and bad attitudes. ESports wont become a real sport by having a bunch of polite choirboys playing it.

well they call it "proffesional" and they call it "e-sports" with those associations, you wouldnt want both teams to walk of the field in a footballgame when one team is winning 2-0 with 20 mins left either. I don't see why they can't play to win and look somewhat good in the 'media' at the same time. Or at least try to show some enthusiasm when giving an interview instead of looking like your mom just died.

I would say that it is in the best interest of players like Toxic and Cooller if e-sports would grow big. A little bit more "pro" conduct could help to achieve that.

PK was fun to watch without having played the game. In fact, CS1.6 was more entertaining than Q4, and I hardly know CS (having gotfrag's Midway as a commentator helps).

Q4 doesn't have the wow factor that PK has, nor has the easy-to-explain strategy of CS. Also, both ITG and TSN seemed quite off in predicting/explaining players moves.

Imo, Q4 is way more entertaining than PK, just because of the maps. In PK all maps seemed grey, with just some dull colours, and a flashy moving red or green guy as an opponent. In Q4 maps are much more detailled, there are more things to look at, more items, better graphics... it's a sight more enjoyable than in PK. These may be not objective arguments, just mine :s .

Apparently moving his mouse from left to right across the distance of his pad (icemat 2nd edition iirc) = 360. Or so I was told. Go get the specs for the mat then you have your answer :)

Edit: tox has his tail between his legs when he walked off stage with cheque, dunno why, he played so well throughout. Could have been different if it wasn't blip as the final map, 2x no RG maps was in Coollers favour. Cooller = machine.

yeah... the announcer wasnt too happy either. Toxics seemingly low mood I can understand since he just lost. Warwitch should've haned over the prize. He would've focused less on reading the names on the cheques and more on raising the mood of both players and crowd. SHAZAAM FTW! :-)

jesus christ, the presenters at the end were fucking outrageous. theyve got some awkward 40-something who can't speak articulately to save his life handing out checks, then some huge bumbling mound of flesh stuttering his way through post-game interviews--figure it out? i know gamers aren't the most charming bunch but at least people like wheat and trillian vaguely resemble normal human beings and do a passable job promoting gaming, what the hell is cpl thinking?

The guy interviewing at the end was there for planetquake 4 which was filming that video which would not exist without them so they can have whoever they want do their interviews right? GO film your own interviews and be as skinny as you want.

I liked the shoutcasting, but the presentation and interviewing bit was a bit offputting. Don't need to do anything especially amazing for something like that, but not making it irritating to watch in the first place can certainly go a long way. I got flashbacks of carmac interviewing fat in the esr uncut video.
